Re: How to create and access a r/w samba share?

The only problem, is that the command to share folders as read/write actually modifies the folder: net usershare add %n %f "" Everyone:F guest_ok=y && chmod 777 %f I don't want to go around trashing the permissions on my folders. :P Given the constraints of a samba usershare modifying the shared fo...

Re: Can not browse Network Mint XFCE 19

How many machines are we talking about in your network? By my count it's 5 ( mint19 + 2 Mint18 + WinXP + Win10 ) For the Mint machines to see each other: ** For Mint19 nothing needs to be done. ** For Mint18: [1] Create an avahi samba service file at /etc/avahi/services/samba.service [2] Then copy a...

Re: Ubuntu publish 18.04 user statistics

Curious Where are Ubuntu users? map.

It appears that only Tony in Topeka in the USA and Mary in Montreal in Canada use Ubuntu. Yet if you go to the Read On link at the bottom it says the opposite.

Re: FreeFileSync to network drive

When you use Nemo ( Home folder ) to connect to a network share it mounts that share to something under: /run/user/1000/gvfs

Note: 1000 is your user id number. To find out if that is in fact yours run this command:

Code: Select all

id
Can FreeFileSync access that mount point?

Re: ntfs-3g cannot be unmounted

"user" and "users" are not equivalent. user allows an ordinary user the ability to mount a partition. At that point only that user can unmount it. users allows any ordinary user the ability to mount and / or unmount the partition. In what may be the only example ever added to a man page it tells you...

When you use nemo to connect to the NAS your share is mounted under this location:

Re: 777 on NTFS partition by default?

I don't understand the nature of the question. chown and chmod do not work on NTFS because there are no Linux permission bits to change. What Linux does is create a "view" of the ntfs partition that makes it look - to both the user and the system - that it does have Linux permissions. This "view" is...

Re: Mint 19: Nemo thinks my hard drives are removable

Took me a bit to follow your description but the answer is: It's a bug. Not in Mint but in Gnome. What you would like to do is this: /mnt/Music /home/frank/Music auto bind ,x-gvfs-hide 0 0 x-gvfs-hide disables any mount from displaying on the desktop or side panel of the file manager but it doesn't ...

Re: Setting Shsres in XFCE (LinuxLite)

This thread is almost redundant because I took moem's advice and installed Mint XFCE. It still has the same problem so am investigating your links, too, thanks altair4 The problem with Mint XFCE is that it doesn't do any of the things LinuxLite does with samba. ** So you will have to install samba:...

Re: Order of booting machines determines if the home network works or not

What you are describing is the whole netbios / master browser ... um ... thing. It's complicated, unreliable, and Microsoft disliked it so much it deprecated it 19 years ago with the release of Win2K. It still functions(?) of course because Microsoft is obsessed with backward compatibility. The thin...

Re: Setting Shsres in XFCE (LinuxLite)

XFCE no longer has a way to create a samba share from Thunar. But this is XFCE and Thunar can be made to do whatever you can imagine so you can create your own way: Create Samba Shares Directly from Thunar But in the long run I would suggest just creating the share definition directly in /etc/samba/...

It does ... outside of the client use spnego = No entry. Is there a reason for that?

EDIT: And client max protocol = NT1 is still missing.

Re: Another broken SAMBA ... Failed to start Samba SMB Daemon

If you have things in your smb.conf that testparm cannot pick up I don't know how restarting with a new smb.conf will fix things but there is a recovery default smb.conf located at /usr/share/samba/smb.conf if you want to try.

I don't think I can help you. The output of testparm doesn't match what you have in smb.conf and I don't know how that can happen.

Re: Another broken SAMBA ... Failed to start Samba SMB Daemon

I don't know how you are getting to the point where you get "failed to retrieve .." error. When you go to Network > Windows network you should get a blank screen because netbios browsing is disabled in Mint 19 without the NT1 reference. Anyhoo what I would do is edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and right be...

So now that the service is up and running again. Do you fancy, helping me out with getting it to talk to the windows PC's on my network? Well, that's another issue. Linux-to-Linux samba is easy. Linux-to-Windows not so much. The version of samba that comes with Ubuntu 18.04 ( Mint 19 ) made some ch...

Re: Another broken SAMBA ... Failed to start Samba SMB Daemon

Took a quick look at the Webmin Samba Howto and one issue is this: 10.) Change your security to share level then save the changes. Share level security ( security = share in smb.conf ) is no longer a legitimate option in Samba. Hasn't been for years. If you force it to that setting today smbd ( the ...

Please place the fingertips of your right hand on your monitor.

I will attempt a Vulcan mind meld across the internet to your specific machine so that I can ascertain which program exhibits this problem.

This may take a while as I am a little out of practice.

Re: File move - not by links?

It depends on the new location. If you move files in the same filesystem, then it's going to be very quick. Try moving files on Windows from the C: drive to any other drive and I guarantee it won't be "fast". +1 Most users don't appreciate the difference. A move within the same partition just updat...
