Re: [SOLVED] CIFS vs Shared Folder in Windows Server 2012 R2

I don't know if you will get notification of this post but I have a question. Is bob@dude-uk the actual user name or is the dude-uk part really a domain? THe reason I ask is because on Win10 you can log into the machine with a Microsoft Account name which is in fact an email address. So if I log int...

Re: Network Discovery in only one direction + # of users question

There's two things about your post that has made me hesitant to reply: It's not clear if you want a samba solution or something else like AFP. I have no experience in AFP. HFS+. I have very little practically no experience with hfs+ on Linux. 1. I can log into my Mint machine from my Macs as long as...

Re: CIFS vs Shared Folder in Windows Server 2012 R2

I'm afraid I do not have an answer to your original question but I may have an insight into this one: Nemo can mount the shared folders. Unless you have modified smb.conf yourself the highest negotiated smb dialect that Nemo can attain is smb1 ( NT1 in samba-speak and vers=1.0 in CIFS-speak ). mount...

Re: Need help networking with Win 7

Anyways, would you mind showing me how to do it the other way also... like doing a direct access like that from the Win 7 machine to the Linux laptop shared folder? It's fine if you can't, but that would be a big bonus for me. :) It's easier on Windows: Open Explorer ( file manager ) and type: \\19...

Re: Need help networking with Win 7

Now open a terminal and run:

Code: Select all

nemo smb://192.168.1.64/Videos
Do you gain access to the share?

Just a note: Static ip addresses are your friend in Samba. If your Win7 server always had the 192.168.1.64 ip address you could create a bookmark to smb://192.168.1.64 and that would be the end of it.

Re: Need help networking with Win 7

Start slow. [1] Can you ping from Mint the Win7 machine by it's ip address: ping -c3 <win7-ip-address> [2] If the ping is successful run the samba client command to get a list of your shares and post the output. This is going to get tricky depending on how things are set up: smbclient -L <win7-ip-ad...

Re: How to auto mount ntfs partition on dual boot windows-linux to share files multi user

To achieve what you want, simply create the mount point, set permissions on it then mount the volume in fstab. It's just the opposite. All mounts to a mount point override the permissions of the mount point with their own. All mounts - NTFS, ext4, cifs, ... Anyhoo ... it looks like Mute Ant already...

Re: Cannot view and copy files using 2 Linux machines

In network folder it seems I have an icon to many: LOU-P35-DSL3, lou-P-35-DSL3 SMB and lou-ThinkPad-T440 SMB. Actually that's normal. The host name without the SMB attached at the end LOU-P35-DSL3 is Samba finding netbios hosts the way Windows does it. The host name with the SMB attached at the end...

By "delete" do you mean going into the desktop and "un-sharing" them? I do not know how to answer that since I don't know what is in "a" and "public1"?

On Thinkpad when I try to open network this is message: Coul not display "network://".Nemo cannot handle "network" locations. We are in an infinite loop. Re: Cannot view and copy files using 2 Linux machines

You've got an error suggesting something is messed up with your install of samba itself on lou-ThinkPad-T440. That will happen - especially on Mint - if at some point you uninstalled it and tried to install it again. Before it gets too complicated what I would do on lou-ThinkPad-T440 is: [1] Go into...

Re: accessing windows 10 machines from linux

I don't know if I can help you with the raspberry pi since I do not know anything about it. But I can tell you that the output you posted and the error message that came with is unfortunately standard these days. For example: altair@xub1404:~$ smbclient -L 192.168.1.208 -m SMB3 -U smbuser Enter smbu...

I didn't realize you added content to your last reply. I have now done as you suggested and all works fine. The only thing I noticed is that the names of the discs are shown as per the disc label, rather than as specified in the fstab file: Use gparted to change the label of the partition so that th...

From your link: Good News [1] On the smbclient end you edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and add the following line - right under the workgroup = WORKGROUP line: client max protocol = SMB3 You didn't mention what version of Mint you are using or what desktop environemnt so I am going to guess: gksu xed /etc/...

Re: fstab options set by Disks GUI

I will use the following to explain why I don't use Disks: First I will run a command to find out facts about my NTFS partition: sudo blkid -c /dev/null | grep ntfs /dev/sda5: LABEL="DataN" UUID="40F76A4E40B0C5CB" TYPE="ntfs" Then I will use Disks to create an entry into /etc/fstab and this is what ...

Re: Will Linux ever make networking 2 or 3 computers as easy as Windows has?

The answer to your question is: It depends. What OS's are on these other computers? If it's Windows it's about to get more complicated in Mint19. If it's between other Linux or macOS machines it's about to get a whole lot easier in Mint 19 - and from an unexpected source: Samba Starting with Ubuntu ...
