Re: windows share

i tried following a few guides for samba, nothing seems to work for it... but i shouldn't need samba for this, i can access shared folders on my laptop with no issue, it's just with the server that's having issues, so i think it's an issue with that ( it runs windows 10 ) The following recommendati...

Re: security questions...

I'm coming from OSX and with their OS, it's nearly impossible to "break in" unless you have the password.
OSX is a sudo based operating system just like Mint.

In order to edit a system file in macOS using say .. nano you have to preface the command with sudo as in:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/hosts

Re: [SOLVED] about nemo's remote folders icons

I'm probably the wrong person to ask since I have written HowTo's on how to automount samba shares using all of the methods you mentioned. With a gvfs-mount script: gvfs-mount smb://server/share Note: this will turn into gio mount smb://server/share when Mint turns 19. Using Gigolo to handle all the...

Re: about nemo's remote folders icons

The mount point is created at the moment of mount by gvfs under: /run/user/1000/gvfs/
The "1000" would be your user id number so it may be different.

And it would look something like: smb-share:server=192.168.1.2,share=shared if it were an smb share.

Re: [UNSOLVED ABANDONED] File sharing between Win10x64 and Linux Mint Xfce 18.3 Sylvia 64-bit

I wonder whether this particular incident has something to do with Microsoft quietly smuggling protocol SMB1 out as a default option of Samba on Windows 10 So far all we have talked about is Win10 accessing a Mint box. A Windows 10 client will access a modern Linux Samba server using the SMB3 proto...

Re: Win10 permission error accessing shared folder

/media/phil was created by the system to act as the parent folder of all temporary mounts such as external USB devices. The system applies special permissions that make it impossible for anyone to traverse the /media/phil folder except phil. Three choices: [1] Add the following to /etc/samba/smb.con...

Re: Avhi-browse and Itunes sevices

All of those WDMyCloud references are from your NAS. It is apparently configured to "register" or "announce" those services to the rest of the local lan via mDNS ( avahi / bonjour ). They are not services or processes originating from or controllable by your Linux system. If you are concerned about ...

Re: LAN connection problem

I do not know. Nothing I can think of fits all of your symptoms. ** Machine1 being able to see Machine2 but not the other way around usually indicates - in the absence of firewall issues, etc - that the two machines are in different subnets. That will happen if you have multiple routers or misconfig...

Re: LAN connection problem

Well, let's make sure all the basics are in place:

Did you install ssh on hansel:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install ssh
Is avahi running on hansel:

Code: Select all

sudo service avahi-daemon restart
Lastly are you sure you are in the same network. On your other machine can you ping hansel:

Code: Select all

ping -c3 hansel.local

I am currently running the ufw on both machines so I'm not sure if that’s a problem.
In addition to the link PhilippeH provided you will need to allow samba in through your firewall:

Code: Select all

sudo ufw allow Samba

In my attempt to try to reproduce your now multiple symptoms I ended up with such a mess that I had to reinstall - it's a test box so it's no big deal. So I reinstalled and followed these steps post install: ** Did an update. ** Installed the samba package. ** Created a Thunar Custom Action to enabl...

Re: chmod giving strange results in Mint 17.3 Cinnamon [solved]

A "noexec" does not prevent the execution of a file. All it means is that the file will have to be called on by an interpreter to run. dobadthing.sh will not run from a noexec fileystem even if the execute bit is set. But sh dobadthing.sh will run even in a noexec filesystem and even if the file its...

Re: chmod giving strange results in Mint 17.3 Cinnamon

A folder needs to have the execute bit enabled in order for anyone to open it. It has nothing to do with what happens after they open it. A "7" allows a user to open the directly ( 1 ) , see the contents ( +4 ), and add / delete things ( +2 ). A "5" allows a user to open the directly ( 1 ) , and see...

The execute bit on a directory allows one to open it to get to what is inside - traverse as the silver backs would say.

Re: File sharing between Win10x64 and Linux Mint Xfce 18.3 Sylvia 64-bit

[1] Your smb.conf looks fine. [2] The reason you have no share definitions listed in testparm is because usershares places them somewhere else. To see them run this command: net usershare info --long [3] Not sure if avahi in Mint is broken or not since you did not run ping gandalf.local in windows. ...

Re: File sharing between Win10x64 and Linux Mint Xfce 18.3 Sylvia 64-bit

In reverse order : The reason samba.service is masked is because it doesn't exist in Linux Mint. You are referencing something written for Mint Debian many years ago. And don't worry about all that fuse stuff either. In Mint run this command to find your exact host name: hostname In Win10 invoke Run...

Just an FYI but enjoy gnome-search-tool while you can. It's been removed from the repository in Ubuntu 18.04: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2386714

It's a pity.
