Re: Samba is Trash

I had hoped that by following instructions, I would have safely shared a network drive under Linux Mint for local use only. That was not the case. I ended up consulting over a dozen threads, some of which are commonly referred to yet barely applicable. I've allowed a firewall exception, chmoded thi...

Re: Samba is Trash

Well, you don't see a post like this very often. The usual complaint goes something like: "OK, I followed some HowTo and set up samba and it don't work good". But this one is the opposite. I set up samba and it works too well. Teenage kids from the planet Tralfamadore can access my samba s...

Re: Share folder via Nemo

Everything looks good to me as long as you have a "client min protocol = NT1" on the machine that is accessing this server. You might consider a mount.cifs mount which gets you away from bugs in Nemo, gvfs, smbclient, etc... On the client: Create a mount point ... say at /media/VidSrv Then...

Re: Share folder via Nemo

I'm assuming here you are running Mint20 since you didn't specify. If you are going to mess around with reinstating SMB1 ( NT1 ) then all of your other machines need to be singin' from the same hymnal. So if you added server min protocol = NT1 ( min protocol is a synonym ) on the server you need to ...

Re: Does NMAP require SMBv1 or will it work with SMBv1 off

Hmmm......... So I have a Win10 machine at 192.168.1.135 that definitely has SMB1 disabled: $ nmap --script smb-protocols 192.168.1.135 Starting Nmap 7.60 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2021-07-15 15:51 EDT Note: Host seems down. If it is really up, but blocking our ping probes, try -Pn Nmap done: 1 IP add...

Re: Mint MATE and caja-share (SAMBA) not working

4. When trying to connect, an Authentication error occurs. I have the same username and password on BOTH computers. Samba has it's own database of users and passwords. It knows about your system login user name but there is no password assocated with that user in Samba. You need to add yourself ( a...

Re: How do I add "nofail" to an fstab entry? (Solved)

In fairness to t42 he did provide a workable solution to your question but you didn't read the fine print on how it would work: If the partition is physically available, it became "known" to the system during boot and mounted later 'on demand' It's the "on demand" part of this pr...

Re: How can I fix fstab so my computer can boot even if one or more data drives are missing or dead? (Solved)

I had replaced "defaults" with "noatime, noauto, nofail" as suggested by t42 so no collision. If you choose to believe in the "collision theory" there was still a collision. "defaults" is only needed when the field for options in the fstab record would otherwis...

Re: Files are reported as folders

If we are taking about Samba it is a peculiar bug that happened when samba moved to Version 4.9. Just to make sure we are both talking about the same thing it happens when you look at a file from the samba client not on the Samba server which shows the file as a file correctly. It's actually hard to...

Observation: defaults - Use default settings. Equivalent to rw, suid, dev, exec, auto, nouser, async. noauto - enters a collision course with auto. It can confuse the system. Um ... I don't think so. fstab is read from left to right. If it encounters an option that contradicts one already set the o...

Re: Failed to mount Windows share: software caused connection abort

Maybe it's just me but this is a very confusing topic. Failed to mount Windows share: software caused connection abort You will likely get that error when you try to access - through the file manager - a host that runs SMB1 only. Most NAS devices and Routers with USB attachments do that because they...

Re: Use Mint as a server (share folders, Internet connection, etc...)

Linux Lite is a fairly light weight distro but it is XFCE based so what it is missing is the "right click a folder and share this thing" utility that Windows and Gnome, KDE, MATE ( with some work ), and Cinnamon can do. What you have to do is edit /etc/samba/smb.conf directly to define wha...

Re: Filesharing and Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyssa (Cinnamon Ed.)

I attempted to get sharing working by using the share option which appeared in the right click menu, but no go. I hit the wall that one can only share one's own files error. It's not an error. It was designed to do that: Prevent an ordinary user from creating a share of something he doesn't own. Th...

Re: My boss wants me to remove Mint and install windoze!

By stating "workstation" you imply their device on their network, so their dictates prevail. That's what it sounds like to me as well. If true I'm surprised they allowed and / or didn't detect that you installed Linux on their property. And if it is your own property I can't imagine them ...

Re: mounting drives

That plus ST1000D...... isn't a partition it's a device - a physical hard drive. You cannot mount a hard-drive. You can only mount partitions on that hard-drive.

You can get a listing of your hard drives with:

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -class disk

The following would make more sense if you couldn't see any usb devices but you might want to run the following to verify what VBox application itself sees attached to the host - you run this on the host: VBoxManage list usbhost Then this to see if your user is a member of the vboxusers group: id If...

Re: trying to use linux as a fileserver

To the extent that after all these changes you:

Restarted the smbd service: sudo service smbd restart

Turned off your firewall: sudo ufw disable

And as a last resort rebooted your box

Not much else you can do.
