Re: Unable to boot event after trying bootrepair

If I am not mistaking at line #18 of pastebin has the /EFI/ubuntu/grub.cfg and it is wrong. config script --------------------------------------------------------------------------- search.fs_uuid 9d205062-beea-4602-9fd0-66c54fba0a63 root hd0,msdos3 set prefix=($root)/boot/grub it should be hd0,msdo...

Re: Boot-Repair help needed

I looked closely yesterday at the file system and found that there simply were no files at all in the /boot directory. If you looked at the root from the lvm (/dev/mapper/mint--vg-root) then /boot would be empty unless you mounted sdx1 (boot partition) at /mapper/mint--vg-root/boot (where ever mapp...

Re: Mint 18.2 With Full Disk Encryption: GRUB Fails Install

looks like you have gpt so use https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2061 . You should be able to drop down to step #4 and continue. Grub will be reinstalled and it should work if you make no errors. BTW- it is very easy to make an error, I made several. I did also use a script that is about...

Re: Boot-Repair help needed

looking at you pastebin you will need to change parts of the boot grub commands.

set root='hd1,msdos1'
linux /vmlinuz-4.4.0-21-generic root=/dev/mapper/mint-vg-root ro
initrd /initrd.img-4.4.0-21-generic

Re: Boot-Repair help needed

I think the file system is not quit structured correctly, but I'm not sure what the exact problem is. You will have to explain or show some how. You can try at the grub menu- when booting into sda press ' c ' for command prompt and enter: set root='hd1,msdos1' linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/mapper/mint-v...

Re: Boot-Repair help needed

did you get it fixed yet ? I do not see any grub.cfg (menu file) file in your last ls -alR output, and it would also go with getting just a grub prompt.

Re: Broken partitions + broken GRUB + broken MBR with dual boot Windows 10 / Linux Mint 18.2

I guess I made some mistakes since GRUB was not at the beginning of the disk, I had to press F9 to select Linux Mint. It is possible with that info , the hdd is gpt and win 8 was efi installed , but linux was MBR installed. Do you remember having to make a small non-formated partition during linux ...

Re: Broken partitions + broken GRUB + broken MBR with dual boot Windows 10 / Linux Mint 18.2

On the display you posted of 'testdisk' , if you hi-light each partition that is listed and press 'p' to list files, does it ? If yes the listed partition is very likely good, if the files are not listed the partition is wrong. some problems with partitions as listed: If the 2nd listed partition is ...

Re: Broken partitions + broken GRUB + broken MBR with dual boot Windows 10 / Linux Mint 18.2

Should I try to use MBR as well ? No , you can use MBR or GPT, you likely have GPT. At the screen you posted press 'p' to print the current gpt partition table and see if it might be correct. Do not press 'w' to write to disk, till some one sees and says all looks good or you know it is good. Other...

Re: Broken partitions + broken GRUB + broken MBR with dual boot Windows 10 / Linux Mint 18.2

I would say rerun 'gdisk /dev/sda ' and if it still indicates a valid GPT is present , select (2) for GPT. Can you now use 'p' to list a good partition table that looks correct? Your comp is EFI/GPT capable and came with Win8 so the hdd is likely GPT partitioned. You can try 'testdisk' to recover pa...

Re: Multiply boot loaders and systems

(and that only in the first 512 bytes of the disk there can be information about the boot loader) That would be wrong. The Windows boot loader is the first 512 bytes of the windows partition, not the hdd. There is a Microsoft boot code in the first 512 bytes of the hdd but it is NOT the Windows boo...

Re: grub rescue message after install of disk image

The last posted grub error is for 'grub4dos' program, not a normal linux grub. The 2 programs are similar but do have different commands and I do not know how to use grub4dos, its been 15 years sense I last used that program. I will say that grub4dos is what "Easy BCD" uses. You might be a...

Re: grub rescue message after install of disk image

Your post timed 1:09pm you have command

Code: Select all

for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $1 /mnt$i; done
, you have an error -- sudo mount -B $1 -- it should be sudo mount -B $i.

Re: grub rescue message after install of disk image

Did you first do -- sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt ? That would give you that error if sda3 not correctly mounted.

If it is auto-mounted some place else on boot up, might first have to umount it. You can check and umount with program 'disk' .

Re: grub rescue message after install of disk image

Hi all. I will have do disagree with what "fabien85" has posted (you are normally correct). Linux is installed on sda3 which is (hd0,msdos3) not (hd0,2). What I am not sure of if (hd0,3) will work yet or not, or if one must specify msdosx or gptx(?). (hd0,2) is the ntfs partition and would...

Re: UEFI - bootloader doesn't get installed

new laptop
How about telling us the Make/Model. Some manufactures make it very difficult to get grub to work.

booting into the live linux run and post output:

Code: Select all

sudo parted --list
in the terminal.

Is this your first linux experience ? or do you know your way around terminal commands ?

Re: Huge problems, BootMGR missing + more

No, that is not a EFI System Partition. It is a ntfs partition bearing the esp flag. ESP's are FAT32, not ntfs. What you say is correct but it does have ESP flag some how and it could be why Win10 thinks it booting in EFI mode. Remove the ESP flag but keep the Boot flag and try booting windows. In ...

Re: Installed linux mint on a seperate hard disk. Cannot boot windows now.

Looks like linux is installed on a GPT partitioned hdd and installed in EFI mode, MS Windows hdd is MBR with and installed in legacy mode. At the moment you will need to enter "bios" and change from EFI- for linux and Legacy for Windows. To verify if I am correct , boot linux and in a term...

Re: Huge problems, BootMGR missing + more

The commands (bootsec) you used are for a MBR partitioned but your last error indicates you have GPT partitioned hdd Must know how hdd is partitioned to give correct help. Commands for MBR will not help booting EFI Win10. Also in this case where win10 does start the boot process , refind likely will...

Re: help figuring out bootloader location

Yes add the MS WIndows boot commands to /etc/grub.d/40_custom. Just copy the current commands from grub.cfg (MENU) file and add the needed line to WIn7 command. menuentry 'Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sdb1)' --class windows --class os $menuentry_id_option 'osprober-chain-01CFDEC6AC686F50' { insmod pa...
