Re: Mint 18.2 64-bit does not recognize my admin password

Joe- Your suggested link looked the best. I printed this out to avoid mistakes and for future reference if it worked - this is just so much magical incantation to me.. Happy to report that it did work - I was able to reset the password. I did try something like this before but could not get the grub...

Mint 18.2 64-bit does not recognize my admin password

I looked at other similarly titled threads and did not find the answer (though they were marked solved!), so I was advised to start a new thread. Some of the threads recommend a command line starting with "su" or "sudo", but those require acceptance of the password. They do not accept mine, which I ...

Re: Not accepting admin password [Solved]

None of this works for me. Anything starting with "su" or "sudo" comes back asking for a password. But that is the problem - my password no longer is recognized. Any other suggestions that doesn't require a password that the system has forgotten?

Mint doesn't recognize addon USB cards

I wish to add more USB ports to my system, and have tried 3 different cards from different sources with no results. I thought from core 4.xx up Mint natively supported USB ports. The first card (Orico PVU3-5O2I-V1) supplied directions for 2.xx core modifications, but we are beyond that. The manufact...

Re: Freecell hangs system - in freecell <solved>

I stumbled on the solution - if something like this happens to anyone else, try this:
<ALT><space> will bring up a menu - click on "maximize" and normality returns!
I still don't understand how I got into this fix, but all's well that ends well...

Re: Freecell hangs system - in freecell

Unfortunately, freecell is part of AisleRiot - and I have already uninstalled and reinstalled it. Is there an alternate version of freecell that will run in Mint? If so, I may try installing that - but it should not be necessary. Someone must know how to get out of this more directly.

Re: Freecell hangs system - in freecell

lsemmens: Thanks, I just tried those now, and it does get me out of freecell. But there is still something wrong - it does not cure the basic problem: how do I return freecell operation to normal? BTW the taskbar does not show while in my freecell. I have tried reinstalling AisleRiot, but freecell i...

Freecell hangs system - in freecell

Hard to imagine, but AisleRiot freecell brings my system to its knees. I like freecell to pass time while something else is happening - a download for instance. It does not load or affect the system - until now. I have been using it for years this way. For no apparent reason suddenly now when I clic...

Re: change xfce to MATE after installing xfce / manual?

Flemur- Thanks for your rapid response! Assuming those xfce documentation links will be understandable to raw newbees already running Mint 17.2 xfce, this sounds like the ideal solution. I will forward them to the user who asked about a manual. I hope he doesn't ask me a lot of questions! But we'll ...

change xfce to MATE after installing xfce / manual?

Can I change an xfce installation to MATE after installing xfce without disturbing any programs or data added after the original installation? I am trying to put together simple Mint 17.2 systems for others, and xfce looked like the simplest flavor. One person so far has asked me for a manual. There...

Re: HP Laserjet 1005 does nothing

Jeepty- Yes, the HP P1005 is connected directly to the Mint 17 machine. I have tried different USB sockets, with expected negative results. The printer works perfectly on my old Windows XP machine, so I will just be using that when I want to print something out. Clumsy, but it works. I still have an...

Re: HP Laserjet 1005 does nothing

I have Linux Mint 17 and an HP P1005. Hardware is newly assembled and Linux has worked well, except for printing at present. It worked yesterday, but right now it does not print. Nothing has changed except the date! I have reinstalled hplip and done other obvious things, like powering down, checking...

Re: Gparted for dummies

Wharfrat: I understand now (I think). At least enough for practical purposes. I was able to use gparted to move the partitions around to get most of the disk allocated to sda1. What threw me was the warning messages whenever I tried to do something with that small partition in the middle. So I ignor...

Re: Gparted for dummies

WharfRat: I am not trying to run gparted on a mounted partition as I already understood that it was not possible. Since I posted, I temporarily gave up on growing the sda1 partition, and figured out how to create a new partition in the unallocated space (just a menu selection). Might as well use it ...

Gparted for dummies

I used clonezilla to move my MInt 17 xfce system to a larger disk (160 mechanical to 240 SSD). It worked OK, but I am having trouble growing the partition with the gparted graphical interface. It will not let me do it. Furthermore, there is a boot partition which seems to be in the way, and when I t...
