Re: Update Manager-broken icon

Sorry for such a late reply...Life just got in the way, and since this was a cosmetic issue I had other fish to fry. For whatever reason, it has fixed itself. Maybe an update took care of it? In any case, it is resolved. As to the presence of the weird files, it hard to say...As a person who dabbles...

Re: Update Manager-broken icon

Just thought I'd report back. The problem seems to be the icon doesn't change when an update comes in while logged in. As I mentioned earlier, I rarely logout/reboot this PC, so the icon stays "up to date" even if updates are available. However, if I log out, and then log back in, the "updates avail...

Re: Update Manager-broken icon

I created a new user. Logged in as that user. Update icon showed properly (i have kept level 1-3 updates available just so I could test this). I then logged back out, and I logged back in my normal user account and the update icon showed properly. Any explanation? Now I normally leave this computer ...

All icons appear as they should.

Will try Cosmo's idea and report back later.

[SOLVED] Update Manager-broken icon

Not sure how it happened, but my icon in the tray for update manager always shows the icon for "System up to date". It is purely cosmetic only. If I hover my mouse over the icon, it tells me how many updates are available as it should. Update manager itself also works as it should. Just the icon doe...

Re: Run program (shell script?) at login

I tried both your suggestions (adding the startup delay) and trying to run "bash "path to script", and neither worked. Its not a big deal. I can always start it manually-I'm just being lazy :D It might be easier to start it when the PC boots up, but doubt it would work that way (since it relies on J...

Re: Run program (shell script?) at login

Here is what I have for the command line in "startup applications": /home/alan/x360mediaserve-0.0.2/start And here is the text of the script: #!/bin/bash java -cp x360mediaserve.jar:lib/cyberlink/clink170.jar:lib/cyberlink/cmgatejava120.jar:lib/jetty/commons-logging.jar:lib/entagged/entagged-audiofo...

Run program (shell script?) at login

I'm trying to run a program (I think its a script) when I login. I've added it to the startup applications, and it IS marked as executable. It just doesn't work. Works fine starting it manually. Specifically, I am trying to start this application: https://sourceforge.net/projects/x360mediaserve/ The...

Re: Handbrake & external DVD drive minor issue-bug?

That's very strange that you say it's slower using the iso as it should be faster than a optical drive. Its been a few days since I have been at it, but IIRC the it spent quite a long time on "obtaining key for DVD" or something along those lines. Also, the drive never sped up when making the ISO.....

Re: Handbrake & external DVD drive minor issue-bug?

That worked, although terribly slow! And all the episodes that I converted matched down to the byte, except the last episode, which completed fine. I tried it again kind of a different way without creating an .iso and so far it *seems* to work fine. I will keep trying different things, but so far wh...

Re: Handbrake & external DVD drive minor issue-bug?

Thanks for the tip! I will give it a try, since I have lots of DVDs to encode anyway. I did not know you could do that with an .ISO. I use Brasero for burning discs, so I will give that a shot. (I know lots of folks don't like Brasero, but it has worked fine for my purposes so far). -Alan PS On exha...

Handbrake & external DVD drive minor issue-bug?

The short version: When I use handbrake to convert my TV shows on DVD, it always cuts the last episode short by about 10 minutes give or take. Now I am almost positive it is only doing this when encoding from my external USB drive. Longer version: My primary computer is an older "desktop replacement...

Figure I'd post in my old thread on this... I don't know WHY it happened, I am not sure HOW it happened, but I just wanted to report I got Far Cry running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Back story: Although I already own this game, i purchased it again from gog when they offered it for the Linux platform. It cr...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

I'm probably not going to win any brownie point for my opinion, but what the heck... I have test drove the tech preview a little bit, and I will say this: It sure is pretty!!! I really like the looks of the OS, and it seems what they have done is a pretty good job of marrying the desktop interface (...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgrade

Microsoft, as in ANY business in a capitalistic economy is there to make money. Goes without saying, but sometimes we overlook that fact... I see Microsoft going one of two directions with this: Give away Windows/Updates for FREE, FOREVER, but hook you with subscription based software only available...

What actually distinguishes one distro from another?

Forgive the really newb question, but having been using Mint now for about a year, and having dabbled in a few other distros, I got to thinking...what *actually* distinguishes one distro from another? Example: Until somewhat recently, I think Cinnamon was synonymous with Linux Mint. That obviously i...

Re: How to tell if application is 32 or 64 bit?

Thank you! Looks like both are 64bit...could be my media server is just too old. I know it didn't work in Windows with the lastest 2.2.x version of vlc; I had to use the latest 2.1.x version. Too bad.

Re: How to tell if application is 32 or 64 bit?

The plugin IS installed (browser-plugin-vlc), but it doesn't appear to work-at least not with my media server... Again, there are actually two choices of this plugin: broswer-plugin-vlc and browser-plugin-vlc:i386; I *assume* the former is 64 bit, while the latter is 32bit. I am still thinking it is...

How to tell if application is 32 or 64 bit?

Specifically....VLC and firefox? The long version: I have NAS/Media server at the house. When I log in to its built in webserver I can listen/play media content in a vlc "window" in Windows. It utilizes the vlc browser plugin. Can't get it to work in Mint. Not a big deal, but would be nice if I coul...
