Re: Too many EFI on HD's and too many Ubuntu options in BIOS

It's probably bootrepair which made those efi\boot\bootx64.efi To find out what is your bootloader : * boot Linux Mint normally * open a terminal and run sudo efibootmgr --verbose * you should get an output like this $ sudo efibootmgr --verbose Timeout: 1 seconds BootOrder: 0003,0002,0004,0005 Boot0...

Re: Linux Mint Swap File vs Swap Partition

gm10 your points are fair, but I think they could be conveyed a bit more smoothly. There are a few questions from the OP which, it seems to me, have not yet been answered : However, if 1gb is not enough will LM automatically resize the swap file or is that a manual operation? How would you know if y...

Re: Adjusting Boot Options in rEFInd

vmlinuz on the / partition is a symlink to the latest kernel (same goes for /initrd.img which is a symlink to the initial ram disk of that latest kernel). For instance on my laptop $ ls -l /vmlinuz lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Oct 1 16:32 /vmlinuz -> boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-65-generic So writing the option...

Re: Adjusting Boot Options in rEFInd

Making manual boot options is like dropping a hammer to kill a fly. What is it you want to do exactly ? If you want to hide some boot options, there are options in refind.conf do blacklist some files or volumes. That's how I do it and it allows to keep the magic of refind. For instance: $ cat /booot...

Re: GRUB: error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue

Well as far as I can see from the second image, there is no Linux partition on the drive. So grub does not find the modules that it stores normally on the Linux partition containing /boot. What are you trying to do exactly ? If you want to clone the windows system but not Linux, then you will need t...

Re: reset kernel LM boots from

how can I set LM to always boot from this kernel? You should just uninstall the defective kernel from within the session that's running ok. Just a bit more details on how to do that : Menu > Administration > Update Manager, then View > Linux Kernels, then navigate to find the branch of the latest i...

Re: Boots to Grub and Not to Linux 19.2

Ok, it's not bad. Just grub does not find automatically the file that gives its menu. It could be related to the fact that you have two drives Although I'm not sure, I'm going to assume you installed in UEFI mode (anyway the next commands will allow us to tell). Please boot your installed system, ru...

Re: Boots to Grub and Not to Linux 19.2

no-brainer trial : open a terminal, run sudo update-grub and reboot. If that's not the trick, then you will have to tell us more details so that we try to guess what the problem can be. It boots to the Grub input window what do you get exactly ? Is it a grub> prompt or a grub rescue> prompt ? Someth...

Re: 2008 Mac Pro Fans Have Started Running Constantly

In the past, there used to be macfanctld, and then mbpfan. I'm not sure these softwares are still maintained. They are for macbook / macbook pro.
If you can get fancontrol to work, I advise to stick to it.

Re: Grub rescue problem (no such device+unknown file system)

Twigster, your problem is sufficiently different from the OP that it would be good to create another thread dedicated to it. I can see your problem is a bit complex too, and will probably need a different solution from the OP. Returning to the OP problem Been thinking about that. Problem I see is th...

Re: How to boot into DOS from Grub?

For OSX, I'm pretty sure it's normal that grub cannot launch it directly. You generally need a special bootloader for hackintosh, like Clover. So you need to tell grub to launch that bootloader (which will then load OSX). I think you will need to ask the hackintoshing community how to do that.

Re: Grub rescue problem (no such device+unknown file system)

Well, bother. I've done more installations than I can count and have never had the installer fail to accept a mount point instruction. Let's hope someone drops in with a bright idea. What about trying spearmint's idea ? Now that the windows bootloader is repaired, I would go with disconnecting that...

Re: how to setup Linux Mint with secure boot enabled.

Ubuntu (on which Mint is based) is fully compatible with the Secure Boot specification. So if the manufacturer did its job correctly (which some do not do, more on that later), then the install will just work with default Secure Boot active. Nothing particular to be done. In details: on the EFI part...

Re: Grub rescue problem (no such device+unknown file system)

Hum, you seem to have done it correctly, and you may be hitting a delicate problem. Is your windows installed in Legacy/BIOS mode ? If you do not know, see this page to find out. Another thing that can confirm is to boot again the live USB, launch the following command sudo gdisk -l /dev/sdb and rep...

Re: Encryption on LM installation

Yes you cannot use "full disk encryption" with the "something else" method. Sure you can, see my simple guide here: [GUIDE] How to encrypt your new installation when dual booting I do recommend using full disk encryption over home folder encryption. In particular the performance hit from home folde...

Re: Why does boot menu state ubuntu instead of Mint?

Mint uses ubuntu's repositories and ubuntu's grub. On the EFI partition, grub is installed at /EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi. (as a side note, this can create conflicts for people trying to dual-boot any two Ubuntu-based distribution, including Mint) One of the potential reasons for this is that Ubuntu's g...

Re: Encryption on LM installation

Yes you cannot use "full disk encryption" with the "something else" method. Home encryption will protect all your personal files and it's pretty good already. The drawbacks I know are: - a small performance cost compared to full disk encryption - the logs and system files could be accessed and tampe...

Re: Keeps booting in Windows

Is the machine an ACER of HP ? If so, that's the reason. Their firmware/BIOS are buggy and do not register correctly that they should boot to GRUB. For ACER see this link: https://itsfoss.com/no-bootable-device-found-ubuntu/ For HP, see this link: https://puolanka.info/goto/to-fix-windows-10-broke-u...
