Re: What's this "ESP" partition for/about? Should I have it?

What is most likely happening is that 1) your computer is UEFI-capable 2) you booted the live USB in UEFI mode Because you booted in UEFI mode, Mint assumes that you want to also install in UEFI mode. The ESP (for EFI System Partition) is a FAT32 partition that holds the bootloader(s) as .efi file(s...

Re: Dual Boot On Mac

I did this on macs from 2004, 2006 and 2010, macOS ranging from 10.6 to 10.11. So Reddog1 is more up to date, follow his advices for macOS. After install and reboot, to install the wifi driver, you may not need ethernet or USB tethering, it may be enough to launch the driver manager with the live US...

Re: Dual Boot On Mac

Last time I did this was several years ago, so take my instructions with a grain of salt. (back then, hfs+ was the filesystem used by macOS, now it's APFS) - from macOS open Disk Utility - shrink the current macOS partition. back when I did this, you had to make another partition to do this, i.e. Di...

Re: A Better Understanding of Secure Boot

No, secure boot only ensures that the bootloader * is trusted**. It applies to more than the bootloader. Third party proprietary drivers such as Nvidia and wireless drivers are blocked by secure boot if they are not signed. I have helped many people get their drivers signed so they will load. We se...

Re: A Better Understanding of Secure Boot

what SB accomplishes is to prevent unwanted execution of some boot item that may compromise the device potentially. [..] This is a private-public key type of thing going on here to validate the software (SW) isn't malicious when we are doing SB operations, no? No, secure boot only ensures that the ...

Re: Linux Mint factory-reset on IMac

Is macOS working ? If so, try installing refind from it. Otherwise, the only solution I see is to take out the hard drive, and use another computer to install Linux in legacy mode (either you put the hard drive as the main drive of the other computer, or you put the hard drive in a USB enclosure to ...

Re: Linux Mint factory-reset on IMac

And finally, last ditch, burn the linux to a dvd, if your imac has one that works. There are credible reports that sometimes, when a usb simply will not boot on an old imac, that a DVD will. Can't say from experience, the oldest mac I've ever installed linux on was a 2008. Yes, I once installed Min...

Re: Linux Mint factory-reset on IMac

Another approach you can use on Mac's of this era is documented in the link I have included below. I have used this approach to install Mint on a 2006 vintage MacBook 2,1 which I am still using. https://mattgadient.com/linux-dvd-images-and-how-to-for-32-bit-efi-macs-late-2006-models/ That works (an...

Re: Linux Mint factory-reset on IMac

Having access to the specs is really important here. If you cannot boot Mint and run inxi -Fxz , please go to https://everymac.com > Mac specs, find your model there (if it's an iMac, look in https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html), and post here the link. I see two iMacs in 2006: h...

Re: GRUB command line and loading kernel

When it finished, I changed the boot sequence back to my normal OS (it says UBUNTU in BIOS boot sequence menu) but it won't boot, it goes to the grub command line. I suspect the external drive was not connected when you booted? I think when you installed to the external drive it overwrote the copy ...

Re: Questions Regarding Install on Mac 4.1/5.1 (2009) w/ Blank Hard drive

When you say Mac, do you mean a macbook, macbook pro, imac, .. ? The series number 4.1 does not correspond to iMac, which was at 9.1 in 2009, but it could be either a MB (e.g. these specs: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/specs/macbook-core-2-duo-2.4-white-13-early-2008-penryn-specs.html )...

Re: about efibootmgr and rEFIind

As far as I know, it cannot be done with efibootmgr or refind. efibootmgr only manages the boot order. You can use it to set a boot a given EFI file, but that file needs to reside on a partition readable by the machine's firmware, which usually can only read FAT filesystems. refind has more abilitie...

It is possible to get the integrated Intel GPU to work, but it is a bit more work. Re: efi partition has very limited space

Solus uses systemd-boot (formerly elilo iirc) which afaiu puts the kernel and initrd image on the EFI partition. That's why It can easily take up space, hence why they recommend the EFI partition to be at least 512 Mb in size (ref: https://getsol.us/articles/installation/disks/en/ ). If you dont hav...

Re: efi partition has very limited space

So the responsable is Solus loader (Solus folder on EFI is 66MB), they advise about it (need minimal 512MB EFI partition to install). IMO consider what is proposed on Solus furums (increase EFI partition size from inside Windows, create a new EFI partition for Solus,..) or create a new post there. ...

Re: Can't create EFI bootable USB stick

Ok, so that's an installing-linux-on-a-mac problem. Chances are that the mac forum will not be of help. Chances are also that the problem does not lie in the making of the USB, it's a mac problem. Test your USB on any recent PC. Would your iMac be this model : https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac...
