Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

Commerce (politically correct for greed) won't wait long to fill a marketing niche created by general dissatisfaction with and disgust at the intimidating arrogance of MS and Apple. It's already started with Zorin (there may be others) offering an extra spiffy version of their desktop OS for a cost...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

Yes windows has problems but so does linux, at the end of the day people stick to the OS that gives them the least amount of problems... I agree with you. And all operating systems do have problems. And all of them require a learning curve to master them. My own experience has been that my Windows ...

Re: Early Christmas gift to me (Lemur Pro)

The battery is insane! 49% and still showing 6 hours! Keyboard is a little more cramped than the Darter Pro, and it does not have as much key travel, but still nice. The Darter Pro still has one of the better keyboards I have ever used. IMO the key travel and tactile feels reminds me of HP Envy or ...

Re: Early Christmas gift to me (Lemur Pro)

Well, shucky darn! I must have used the wrong stickers. :( Well gosh, the right stickers give you at least 100 extra megahertz, and I am sure that it squeezes some extra ram in there somewhere....:) Actually, to get extra RAM, you have to download it. It is amazing what they can do now... I just ga...

59% and it shows 10 hours left!!!!! Plus the stickers make it run faster/better....
I think Clem & the Mint Team should include this vital piece of information in the release notes for Mint users. I am wondering if I should upgrade my motherboard and CPU, or invest in more stickers... hmmm

Re: Linux Mint 20 success or issues

That was an incredible post. Thanks for taking the time to put that together. It's a really good feeling when you reach that point that you can leave Windows forever. LOL, I remember feeling a bit anxious when I nuked Windows off of my last computer. But at the same time if felt exciting and good t...

Re: Linux Mint 20 success or issues

I notice a general theme in some replies on forums: "what's the best type of cat to buy?" "I wouldn't buy a cat, get a dog". That's what I mean by ludicrous - muddying the water instead of answering the question. Well, yes, but if the question is "what's the best type of cat to buy so it can guard ...

Re: Early Christmas gift to me (Lemur Pro)

The new kid, for some reason I cannot get it to rotate properly. I tried in GIMP, and drawing. I haven't had the problem in Mint (yet) but, back in the bad old days of Windows, I got around the problem of forum software rotating an image by using a graphics program to over-rotate the image, such as...

Re: Early Christmas gift to me (Lemur Pro)

Thanks I do have a wonderful family, and I am truly blessed to have them. I'll be at the hospital tomorrow while my oldest daughter gets a golf ball sized lump removed from under her left arm. They did an initial biopsy, and said it seems to be ok, but they will check again tomorrow. She is NOT goi...

Re: Clem Lefebvre interview

One of the reasons Mint is favourable to new users is the welcoming support and camaraderie from our well managed forum. This is actually the #1 reason why I stick with Mint. Mint isn't the only solid distro that I like. But the fact that it has an exceptional forum like this is THE deciding factor...

Re: Clem Lefebvre interview

A lot of businesses which would go (and/or have gone) with an SLA and something like Red Hat. That rules out Linux Mint. That's a good point. Using an operating system on business machines is a different situation. I was thinking of my workplaces before I retired that had hundreds of computers in a...

Re: Random thoughts on distro hopping

I remember trying to find the right distro for my first web server,I tried Debian, Fedora, CentOS, then i settled on Ubuntu, it was the easiest one to learn, and the one I stuck with for a server. For my laptop and PC, I only went from Ubuntu to Linux Mint. So, for my experience I was distro hoppin...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

I came to Linux when I was asked to build a web server, before I was using a WIMP server (Windows/IIS/MySQL/PHP), but knew that a industry web-server needed a LAMP server. This was well over a decade ago, but it did mean that I was using the terminal from the get go, and it took a lot of trial and ...

Re: Clem Lefebvre interview

+1 Yes, I too found it very interesting that he and the Mint Team are open to bringing in the best features from other sources. I loved that mindset. He also talked about placing a priority on just having fun as they work to improve Mint. What a healthy attitude! I'll be honest, I find it disappoin...

Re: Clem Lefebvre interview

I liked the interview, honest answers. Edit: I thought Clem's background with Linux in general was very interesting! The comments about learning from other distros was also very good. There are a lot of good things to be learned from many distros and if you look at the evolution of Linux Mint you c...

Re: Clem Lefebvre interview

Regarding Mint being a good distro for beginners: 1. It is. 2. Being a good distro for beginners does not disqualify it as being a good distro for advanced users. This is not a mutually exclusive thing, where satisfying one group negates its value to another group. Mint is receiving ongoing good pub...

Sorry about the quotes. I was just trying to convey a positive message about Mint in general and Clem & the Mint Team in particular. But I'm definitely sorry if you did not get my meaning in my post. I assumed that folks would read the article themselves and not just take my quote and run with it. S...

Re: Clem Lefebvre interview

"We don’t want to attract new people but please the ones we already have." "People love what we do and we just want to do it better and better and better again. That’s the biggest goal going forward." Those quotes from Clem were my favorites of the entire interview. I love hearing that mindset. It'...
