Re: What Mint releases were your best and worst experiences?

I think Mint 20 and 20.1 have been the best experience for me so far. I have it running on all of our computers, laptops and desktop, old and newer computers. I reflected back on my previous Mint release experiences and I've not had any major Mint related issues. There have been a few issues over th...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

The point is "we" can talk until we are blue in the face that "linux can do and run any program or it's linux equivalent that Windows can" but when the Windows user does not see exactly what they are used to not to mention not getting it to run smoothly in wine - they are gone. ...

What Mint releases were your best and worst experiences?

What were some of your favorite Mint releases? Were there any releases that were especially troublesome? Or, have they all been about the same experience for you? I was just curious.

People shouldn't have clean drinking water until they learn about water treatment and waste processing.
People probably shouldn't drink something if they don't know what it is they're about to drink. It's a "scientia potentia est" kind of thing.

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I hope this does not come out as harsh but new people who give up on linux probably should not have tried it in the first place. Why do we keep comparing apples to oranges (pre-installed Windows/Mac to user installed linux) they are two completely different environmental situations. If a non-techni...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

There is a learning curve involved in the transition. The software is different and there isn't a help desk you can call when you screw something up. Software difference? So the Windows users have been using Firefox or Chrome, LibreOffice (Write and the spreadsheet) and maybe VLC for videos. Where ...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

How would they know that unless they try? And what's so bad about trying something, and then deciding it's not for you? I do think it's important to be honest with someone (friend or family member) if you're suggesting they try Linux for the first time. But you do make a good point for people who l...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

So people give up on linux because it was misrepresented to them, by well meaning people, and they shouldn't have been using it in the first place. Usually because of an upgrade failure, that was a problem I tried to resolve with a core group of people for years, and we almost had the problem licke...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

The most important trait for the person who just wants a stable operating system is good judgment. The most important trait for the person who is trying to figure things out is a high tolerance for frustration. I agree with you. I remember my very first experience with a computer at my place of emp...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

...Plus there is STILL after all these years too darn much RTFM attitude by many. Even more frustrating is being told that, then not being able to understand the FM due to the technical jargon, the FM is missing some steps, or has steps that tell you to do something without telling you how to do it...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

What one person likes, another may not like. You can't please everyone. And it's okay if people decide Linux is not for them. I respect that choice. It's the same with people who do like Linux but disagree over distro choices. Choose the OS you like best and go with it. No worries, and I'm thankful ...

Re: LM 20.1

It installed quickly and easily on my laptop and desktop. It seems to be working well with zero issues. I did a clean install. I do this every 6 months when the new Mint XFCE rolls out. I know it's weird to wipe my computers clean this way, but I feel good knowing I have a fresh installation. I'm gr...

Re: Manjaro - what's the big deal

I do tend to distro hop but for a long time Mint has been my main distro. Several years ago I had Manjaro installed on a laptop. I must have gotten someplace with it but not very far. Also I found the Manjaro forum was full of a lot of Manjaro fan boys that were snotty, rude and not very helpful. I...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

people are lazy and want it all, they want it fast, they want it without investment of time. That's just not reality in this life. That is the #1 reason. And #2 is probably that "many" people are incapable of change. How many posts are about some newer Linux user whining about some insign...

Re: LM 20.0 an utter disaster on less than latest hardware.

I've been thinking the same thing. It's like having a 20 year old car with hundreds of thousands of miles on it - and expecting it to run like a new car. At some point it's just time to upgrade. I understand that some people can't do that financially but it's not the car manufacturers fault if your...

Kenetics happened to mention above my nickname and the fact that I started the Mint Cafe sometime in 1907. In 1907 computers did not exist :D It's really amazing how much the world has changed since the early twentieth century. Charles Babbage KH FRS 26 December 1791 – 18 October 1871) Babbage is c...

Re: LM 20.0 an utter disaster on less than latest hardware.

20 something years worth of hardware improvements do matter. It's a BIG leap in processing performance in many contexts. I mean no insult here, but you might be better off sticking with 17 or older versions of Mint if you're hellbent in sticking with using a CPU that is 20+ years old like the 286 o...
