Re: Lost files after Drag and Drop

As per my original post: Mint 19. Tricia, to be more specific. Yes, I've been backing up my files to another physical drives for over twenty years. So... When dragging and dropping a file from the desktop to a folder or from a folder to another folder, sometimes the file will just disappear. ...

Lost files after Drag and Drop

Mint 19 When dragging and dropping a file from the desktop to a folder or from a folder to another folder, sometimes the file will just disappear. Gone. Kaput. It doesn't happen often, but it can be surprising, annoying, and time consuming when it does. I haven't had a major loss yet, but I'm concer...

Re: Could not install security updates

I waited until a few updates came through to post again...
Three more updates since my last post, all have been successfully installed. No error messages.
Joy has been achieved. :D

Thanks.

Re: Could not install security updates

Here we are again. I just tried to install a gnupg2 update and after it seemed to go through the process but at the end, I got the "could not install the security update" message and the red X. I refreshed the update and got the "your system is up to day" and the green checkmark....

Re: Could not install security updates

Thanks! That was simple enough. 8) I guess my eyes just glossed past the google/earth part of the messages. Even if I did notice it, I wouldn't have know what to do until you told me. Incidentally, the only computer that had the problem was also the only computer that had Google Earth on it. Another...

Could not install security updates

I've searched for an answer to this question, but found no working solutions (Note: I'm not a Linux expert. ) Mint Cinnamon 19.3 For over a month after every update installation attempt, the update icon displays a red "X" and a note in the update manager states " Could not inst...

gnucash export question

Now that I've retired, I've closed one of my business accounts and I like to remove it entirely from gnucash. There are years of transactions I'd still like to keep for reference for the next several years. Deleting the account seems to give me two options: Delete all transactions or transfer them t...

Re: What is causing my hard drive to max out

Yeah. The chipset can read from bank A and B in parallel. Think about breathing through your nose. Both nostrils, A and B, at the same time. Then block nostril B. It slows down your breathing. Now, that's an explanation and an answer I can understand. The original memory stick? You mi...

Re: What is causing my hard drive to max out

The two matching memory sticks will run in parallel for double the speed. Adding the third stick might give you extra memory that runs at a slower speed or it might slow everything down, depending on the chipset. Start with the two memory sticks in parallel. You might then toss the other stick or b...

Re: What is causing my hard drive to max out

Another question (with thanks for your patience.) I downloaded the manual for my computer and found this info: DIMM Socket Locations (There are four sockets) 1. DIMM1, Channel A (populate first) 2. DIMM2, Channel A (populate third) 3. DIMM3, Channel B (populate second) 4. DIMM4. Channel B (populate ...

Re: What is causing my hard drive to max out

This is more of a hardware question, but it's related to the subject at hand... OK, I've ordered up two new identical 2GB memory modules that I'll be putting in channel A for my upgrade to 4GB RAM. That leaves the original 2GB module from another manufacturer. Is there any reason I couldn't add that...

Re: What is causing my hard drive to max out

Sorry for the late response: Things got a bit hectic for a while and I also wanted to take some time playing around with the browser options before I posted again. I'm guessing that a RAM upgrade will solve my problems, It looks like I have only 1.89 GB. Whether or not I use Chromium or Firefox (I'v...

Re: What is causing my hard drive to max out

OK, thanks. I've added all your suggestions to my Linux Notes. I'm waiting for the behavior to manifest itself again, but even though it's been a constant problem since the install, it hasn't happened at all so far today... It looks like the Chromium browser may the major culprit. I never opened it ...

What is causing my hard drive to max out

Since my recent upgrade to 19.3 there are long periods of time where the disc drive seems to be running hell-bent-for-leather for long periods of time, often to the point where I just can't get anything accomplished until it's settled down Here's the background: I've been using Mint for years, this ...

Miniminder alternative for Mint/Linux

Is there is a trusted * Linux version of Miniminder, a simple daily reminder Windows program? I've used Miniminder for years because of it's reliability and simplicity and I miss it. I was able to install it under Wine, but after three attempts I found it did not work well in Mint and was unreliable...

Re: Disable boot from external usb drive

That doesn't sound right - what kind of computer is it? Truth. It's an older Compaq 6000 desktop. I've been running an older version of Linux on it for years at my business. Now it's home and I'm using it as the test dummy for the other Windows 7 computers at home that I'm converting to Linux. Inci...
