Re: kernel update requires change to mount command?

Oh man I'm confused. I don't know how I got that mixed up. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere there was at least one vulnerability 4.4 didn't fix. Hm, I'll look into it. UPDATE: Ok, so what it is, is, my 4.4.0-21 was not patched AFAIK ( other 4.4's per your link are ) but I switched to 4.15.0-34 becau...

Re: kernel update requires change to mount command?

Well I'm upgrading to 4.15 because 4.4 doesn't have the Spectre/Meltdown fix, so I won't be using 4.4 anymore. When I list kernels in Update Manager I don't see any tabs. When I click on 'changelog' link https://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/l/linux/linux_4.15.0-34.37~16.04.1/changelog ...

kernel update requires change to mount command?

Hi, I updated my kernel from 4.4 to 4.15 and now suddenly mount command works differently. I used to: mount [disk dump image] /mountpoint but now that same command produces an error: failed to setup loop device: Operation not permitted adding '-o loop,ro' fixes it, but I'm just wondering if there's ...

What's this special character called?
I don't remember where I found it. One of the fonts that comes with Mint. Noto Mono U+2000 seems to work.

But it's stressing me out!
Sorry about it

Re: Forum edits my posts, deletes spaces... Not cool. :(

Sorry, this confuses me... do you post things for yourself to read, or for others to read? For most people, double or triple spaces do not make texts easier to read. I'm sorry to hear that reading is hard for you, though. That must be tough. I fail to understand how separating sentences by a few ex...

Re: Forum edits my posts, deletes spaces... Not cool. :(

You apparently are in the category of people who write " run on sentences " and never once use the <return key> to help format the display so that it is readable. the problem here is, your screen may be 43 characters wide, while my screen is 120 characters wide. If you read at all you'd find I writ...

Re: I'm finding my OS .iso images created with dd getting corrupted. Why?

Hm. I've been using 'dd' ( disk dump ) to create .iso images for years with perfect success until whatever caused this corruption. Well even if it's not creating ISO format, the data is stored in .iso file, which I've always used to restore OS file systems with no issues. In this case, the .iso exte...

Forum edits my posts, deletes spaces... Not cool. :( [will concede to CLOSED]

Why does the forum convert my double or triple spaces into single spaces? Doing so makes sentences appear to run together and is harder to read; I got enough eye strain as it is looking at this screen all day! Please don't modify my post text. I use extra spaces on purpose and would like to see them...

I'm finding my OS .iso images created with dd getting corrupted. Why?

Hi, I've been making OS images for years and have never encountered this issue. I had some cascade failures that turned out to be caused by corrupt .iso file systems, which would not mount. Having restored working backup images and fixed my hard drive ( earlier having tried to restore the corrupted ...

Alas, installation of TB themes comes with bonus of unverifiable and potentially malicious code that may damage my computer or invade my privacy. I'll pass, but thanks!

Re: Main purpose(s) of blacklisting packages

Thank you. I have a tool blacklisted where an update changed the UI and I largely prefer the original UI so I don't want to update it. I wish I had done this with Thunderbird. It used to honor my dark color scheme, and now it's all white and bright as the sun and burns my retinas  and there a...

Re: Main purpose(s) of blacklisting packages

It's been a long time but it seems I remember now ignoring the kernel one because updating the kernel version caused my system to freeze up a bit. Am deleting the others. Hopefully ignoring kernel won't adversely affect me too much security-wise :? I definitely can't live with constant freeze-ups. A...

Re: Linux is secure…right?

6 years now and have never had a problem. During that time, none of my Linux computers have ever been infected with any virus or malware. Nor has the computer of any Linux user I know of. Not to encourage fear/paranoia, but how do we ever really know? Not all attacks are easy to spot. We'll be luck...

Main purpose(s) of blacklisting packages [SOLVED]

Hi, I failed to locate any info on the 'Blacklisted packages' tab in Update Manager. I have 4 packages blacklisted: linux linux-firmware linux-kernel xorg-server I definitely did not add the items directly to this list as I have no idea what the list is really even used for. Though I suppose it's po...

Re: convert sha256 fingerprint from hex to decimal

Thanks but the formats don't match. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the hash sum is the same as the fingerprint. The fingerprint is like the shorthand version... I think I found the solution here: https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/178936/how-to-verify-sha256-fingerprint-of-apk T...

convert sha256 fingerprint from hex to decimal [SOLVED]

Hi, I've spent half an hour trying to figure out how to verify the signing certificate of a file and 'sha256sum' isn't giving me the format I need. The format I'm given to verify is (consists of characters hex 0-F): ##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:## ##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:##:...

Re: Hardening against Spectre/Meltdown and compiling kernels [SOLVED]

One more quick question: where is the announcement page for Ubuntu releases? Have scoured web to no avail. There doesn't seem to be anything useful on Ubuntu main page or blog nor the 'Releases' wiki, and no mention of release of subversions ( 18.0.4.1, etc. ). It would be nice if there was a link w...
