Re: How to use a short password
Doesn't the bad guy already have to have physical access to the computer in order for a short login password to be of concern? My understanding is that especially if you are not using encryption you've already been pwned whether you have a long password or not.

Re: Mouse has just gone nuts!
It's not booting from the dvd then. Two possible reasons for that. Maybe it's not a properly burned bootable LM dvd, for example maybe it's a blank dvd. Or it is a LM dvd but the bios is not actually set to try to boot from dvd first. Depending on what options your bios has, you might be able to set...

Obviously those are example folder names shown to explain how they should sort under his method.
Based on what rene said, can't he just make his own LC_COLLATE, sorting underscores above letters? Or does that have undesirable effects across the os?

Re: UFW blocked connection, what is this connection?
If you have a router that has VLAN capability then I think you could keep the two computers in different VLANs so they couldn't communicate. Similarly, on wifi you could put the windows computer on the guest wifi and set your guest wifi to be isolated.

If you physically unplug the laptop monitor would that achieve what you are trying to do? It should be a ribbon inside the laptop that you can unplug.

Go through that and stop before the part where it tells you to install. We don't want to install, we just want to load the live session and test the mouse.

Re: How to check the integrity of the downloaded ISO image of Linux Mint 18.3 on WinXP [Solved]
If evil hackers swapped the ISO, they might also have swapped the checksum file. We verify this didn't happen by running a GPG check. But if evil hackers swapped the ISO, then you are running a live session from a hacked ISO. The gpg in the hacked ISO might falsely report the ISO to be authentic. I...

Wait. You guys are talking about using the iso to run a live session, and then using that live session to check the authenticity of the iso?
Why are you checking it if you already trust it? Logically speaking you cannot check authenticity this way.

Re: Mouse has just gone nuts!
If multiple mice plugged in in multiple ways are going nuts in both linux and windows, then this is not a linux problem. And now you've even eliminated the touchpad as the source of the problem by disabling it in bios. Try running the Mint live dvd, but don't install linux from there and wipe out al...

Whether it makes a difference or not is mostly based on how large you'll be displaying the scanned image. The examples I gave are when higher dpi will make a difference. Roughly speaking, when you view the image on a computer it looks huge but when you print it out it's much smaller. So if your targ...

I guess if you are using NTFS and you get ransomware in windows it could encrypt all your files even on the linux side. No?
