Re: Windows and Mint rolled into one!

That looks great but I'm also thinking that monitor could star in it's own big screen movie, aka Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!

Now which half is which :)

Re: blocking social media and some spying

For anyone using the hosts file, I modified a script I found online that downloads hosts files from different sources and combines them into one. The script removes duplicates and comments, and also allows for incorporation of user whitelists and blacklists. My resultant hosts file has roughly 6500...

Re: Thunderbird E-mail

Will G-mail still give those blasted security alerts if I set up Thunderbird for G-mail? I don't what it is but I use the same couple of devices to check email and at least once a week I have to reply to a "security alert' that a new device has logged into my account even though I've used that...

Re: Cellphone battery life

My question here is whether to keep it charged as much as possible, or should I let it run down some before recharging? Hi BoDill, Assuming it has a lithium-ion battery (pretty much guaranteed) it seems the consensus these days is to let it get down to approx 20-30% and then charge it up to 80-90% ...

Re: Background image?

Does anyone know what versions of mint this picture is from? I would like to get the image for my background. I'm not sure if that was an official LM background or not, but it seems to appear on the net around the same time LM18 was released. Either way, it's available as a free 2880x1800 download ...

Re: Google sponsors on linux mint?

Sometime during a recent FF update the browser default homepage was changed to : https://linuxmint.com/start/tricia/ which has an embedded Google search box. It's easy to change the homepage back to whatever you want in the settings. The probable reason for it, assuming LM has a Google Adsense accou...

Re: Can't get anything done, what happened to Mint?

A lot of socializing going on here, Anyway I swapped out to a 2TB hard drive and closed a couple thousand tabs, but the problem of system taking over on its own, to defrag, or load updates remains, and when this happens I can just as well abandon everything I've been working on for a couple hours, ...

Re: UK online banking, best browser and VM

Using Windows with VM, does it not prompt for additional license key as it considers the VM install to be a separate machine? I have three genuine Win 10 Pro installs but moving them (especially onto a VM install) has in the past been problematic. Thanks It was quite a while ago that I set it up, b...

Re: UK online banking, best browser and VM

Hi _tab, I have a Nationwide current acc that I occasionally login to using FF on Linux. I don't do much on there as it's not my main account but it seems to work fine when I do. I'm guessing when they say they don't support it they mean they won't troubleshoot any access problems. It's an interesti...

Something like 65% of social interaction/communication is based on body language and tone of voice. Any of us can write a sentence and deliver it in person in such a variety of ways that it can be interpreted differently each time. Back in my corporate days when email was being introduced we were gi...

Re: The absolutely most needed feature for Linux Mint

I have mixed thoughts about this. I have W10 in a VM for occasional needs but would probably prefer to dual boot for Windows performance benefits. However I opted for the VM as there were too many anecdotal stories of woe. The new LM website has a statement on the home page in answer to the question...

Re: Tethering Cellphone to Laptop With as hotspot

Here is another link that is just all screenshots Setup a Wifi hotspot in Linux Mint/Ubuntu . Maybe something there will help. One small difference in that one is that the author is selecting the WiFi as the Internet connection, so it's shared for both the hotspot and the net. I think the only diff...

Whether the wifi is toggled on in the software or not, it does the same thing. As for a Video. There's a Video? Saw no links to anything like that, I've looked up and down the post since you stated that and I still can't find a link to a video. In the link Mick-Cork posted, How to Create a WiFi Hot...

Re: Tethering Cellphone to Laptop With as hotspot

Hi everywhere I look there are how to use your phone as the hotspot. But I want to do the opposite and use my laptop as the hot spot. How does one do that? Never tried it myself, but wondering if this article would take you down the right path: https://linuxhint.com/create-wifi-hotspot-linux-mint/

Re: What made you choose Linux over any other operating system?

2014, had a problem on a Windows laptop. Could possibly have resolved it but was aware of Ubuntu and thought I'd try it first. Was good enough to convince me about Linux, but after a month or so decided Ubuntu itself and me didn't gel. Googled other Linux OS's and read about LM 17.1, installed it, a...

Re: HELP NEEDED! USERS, PASSWORDS, HELP!

I'd agree with JoeFootball's suggestion of a clean install, but before doing so it might be worth posting up some info about the laptop here first. If it's really old and has a limited spec (RAM, CPU etc) you might need a light weight OS to suit. Do you know what Linux OS is installed at the moment?...
