Re: Hardware Upgrade

Thanks austin I do use rsync and have read and understood the tutorial. I presume this will only work though if I'm going from AMD->AMD, not AMD->Intel? If I put a new SSD in and install 18 alongside what I already have, could I then delete the 17 partition(s) on the 80GB (and updating grub) and kee...

Hardware Upgrade

Hi I'm considering upgrading my hardware and I have two questions related to this: 1. (shorter term - next couple of months) If I purchase a new Hard Drive (SSD), can I 'restore' my existing partitions (Mint, Swap, Home, XP) from my current 80GB SATA drive to the SSD if I create partitions on the SS...

Re: Linux seems slow when transferring files?

What speeds do you get if you boot the Win7 machine via Mint Live USB/DVD and try the other way?

Canon PIXMA MG2550. @Hove Heretic

Sorry for coming to the thread late. Check out the thread I started here for how to use Simple Scan and SANE if you are still interested in pursuing that route. The SANE testing was complete in the latest version for the PIXMA 2400 series.

Which may well explain why I get a 404 on 4.9.3.1. I'll know for next time!

Now refreshed and updated, Many thanks.

MintUpdate Error

Hi MintUpdate states 'A new version of the update manager is available' (to 4.9.3.1) but on attempted update I receive the following: W: Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main/m/mintupdate/mintupdate_4.9.3.1_all.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 204.45.82.194 80] Is anyone else seeing this? A couple of hours backing everything up, for a quick, easy update! Always better to be safe than sorry, but it seemed just too easy!

Thanks!

Re: Wine and standard Windows games

How do you get Windows games to run in Wine? I am talking about the games that come with the OS, like Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Minesweeper , etc. I copied the folder for Spider Solitaire onto my Mint partition, but when I right-clicked the exe file and selected "Open with Wine . . ." nothing ha...

Re: HP come up trumps for Linux Printing

I agree with the above, after having an HP printhead go badly wrong after a relatively short and not particularly hard life , rejecting all ink (HP and compatible) and throwing up numerous errors eventually to stop printing any colour, I've chosen a Canon and don't have a problem with their Linux su...

Also, using this:

Code: Select all

in terminal shows ink levels also.

Lovely!

Re: Canon and SANE

Brilliant! I've added the PPA, performed a standard software update, and updated to version 1.0.25. I then added simple scan back into the menu, but my scanner was still not listed. As I am connecting over wifi I thought it may not have been automatically found, so I did a: sudo gedit /etc/sane.d/pi...

[SOLVED] Canon and SANE using simple-scan and xscan

Hi I've been using Linux Mint for about a year now and am very happy with it. I'm running Mint 17.1 Cinnamon. My very expensive HP Photosmart printer decided it's printhead would no longer print any coloured ink through it regardless of ink manufacturer. It also decided all paper was the wrong size ...

I'm having great fun with FS-UAE. It plays all the old Amiga games without any problems although could be too realistic as it even recreates the disk sounds and loading speeds!

It may be on the way soon though:

I like it too! I know it's a Windows thing, and I know Linux is not Windows, but I agree it should be a File Manager thing (at least option), irrespective of OS...

Re: Partition space re-allocation

Good advice from expat_tony above... Your Mint 17 / partition is 15GB and probably will be fine for anything you need. My thought is that increasing the / partition in size is not going to have any advantage for you. You can easily use the Windows partition for storage of personal files (photos, vi...

Partition space re-allocation

Hi Guys I've successfully installed and been running Mint 17 64bit for several months now and have only been back into XP twice (and not to work as I am more than happy with Mint). My XP partition can now be significantly reduced by uninstalling stuff I no longer use (large games, old mail programs,...

Re: Best Update Method from 16 to 17?

I have read through the austin.texas tutorial and to me method 3 looks like an incredibly dirty upgrade. I cannot really comprehend what would the advantage be over method 2. To me it looks like a method 2 with the downside of leaving behind some of the version 16 leftovers (unused files, broken li...

Best Update Method from 16 to 17?

Hi I'm looking to update from Mint 16 Cinnamon 64 bit to Mint 17 Cinnamon 64 bit and have downloaded the iso file and checked checksum and then burnt and checked disk. As I see it there are three main ways to update: the whole wipe and start again, the Mint recommended way of backup and restore , an...

Re: An easy way to start linux mint in my XP Home computer

Hi My experience very much as a noobie here is that the best way to see if Linux Mint is for you is to burn a live DVD and try it! You need to download Linux Mint ( http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php - version depending on your computer), burn it as an image to a DVD (using Nero, cdburnerxp or si...
