Re: Installing Mint on a separate SSD from Windows 10 Pro

Thank you BG405. So with the "Something else" option I can leave the manufacturer's 29 kb as it is and make my own "/" "/swap" and "/home".
I think I'll go for that. At least there's no Windoze on the disk to bother me.

As this is not my thread, I won't mark it solved, but will report if successful.

Re: Installing Mint on a separate SSD from Windows 10 Pro

My intention is exactly the same as the OP's but my drive is a new HDD, type WD Elements.
This has 29Kb of "System Volume Information" on it.
Do I need to format the drive ànd get rid of everything before I start?

Re: Advice requested re Linux Mint 18.3 Mate installation

@pbear I have a new laptop with plenty (16GB) of memory but only one 256GB SSD and Win10 pre-installed. My old one has 8GB Mem + 1TB HDD which is about half full, but the machine itself is falling apart (loose flat screen meaning I can't fold it shut, incurably out-of-control mouse driver, & more) A...

Thanks Karl, I did what you suggested and it all worked fine. So I suppose it was one of those temporary technical problems you mentioned.

Openjdk/Iced Tea update 7u131-2-6-9 : Safe to deploy?

My update manager says the latest version is not authenticated.
Seems odd considering how upfront their websites are about who's responsible for what.
Is it the real thing?

Re: Mouse cursor jumps around and issues clicks without me touching it.

Thank you Pjotr. I'm downloading the ISO as we speak and will make a boot drive (Lenovo has no DVD burner, a lack I've regretted ever since I bought it). I'll bump this thread once I've tried the boot drive. Could be a few days but keep watching, please. Do you think LM 17.4 would behave differently...

Mouse cursor jumps around and issues clicks without me touching it.

I have a serious problem with mice (plural of mouse) going crazy I run Mint 17.0 64bit on a Lenovo U laptop. There is no other OS installed on it. A few weeks ago my cheapo MS plugin mouse started jumping around when I tried to navigate the screen. This has got progressively worse to the point that ...

Question re upgrading 17.0 to 17.3

Quiana (64-bit) with Cinnamon 2.2.16 (installed version according to my Synaptic list) has been working nicely for me for well over a year now, and I heeded Clem's words in http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2725 about not upgrading if necessary. So I ignored LM 17.1 and 17.2., though I have religiously i...

That's exactly what I needed to know, caribriz, thanks.
Sorry for the long delay in writing. I hardly visit the forum these days since I killed Win8 and use LM17 exclusively as a running system "never to be touched". I'll install 17.1 on a stick first and check out my customisations there.

Re: Promissed feature missing in rebecca upgrade Cinnamon

I found that if I used a different icon theme other than the default offerings (that is not one of the new Mint-X color sets), the folder color-change option was not available in the drop down menu when I right-clicked on a folder. Changed the icons to one of the Mint-X color icon sets, and the opt...

Canon wastes ink, can I tweak driver, or time for new ptr?

I've had a Canon Pixma iP4850 for a few years now, which I like for its software capabilities, but I think it needs optimising for Linux, now that I've practically stopped using Windows. I know of two appropriate drivers installed on my machine. One is the generic inkjet driver and the other is cnij...

Re: Besides /home folder, what other files, folders to backu

How long do you have use of the external drive for, by the way? I suggest you copy everything I listed in my last post. Actually the way I did it, so as not to confuse myself, was first to create two folders on the external disk, named "backup_home" and "backup_FS". All visible and hidden folders fr...

Re: Besides /home folder, what other files, folders to backu

First of all Vanessa, it seems you edited your thread title to 'Wifi', to reply to WharfRat (or was it him?). You'd better restore it to the original, or you'll attract the wrong set of customers and totally confuse them at that. Maybe you already have. When you backed up your /home directory, did y...

Re: Upgrade Mint version, while not touching Win7 partitions

@Vanessa 1 Mb partition : If you're a fanatically tidy person (Virgo? :) ) you'll continue to fret about this. But my (Sagittarius 8) ) advice would be that it's 1 bleedin' megabyte in gawd knows how many gigabytes, so just don't waste time on it. It's probably a remnant of an auto-created 1 Mb divi...

Re: How to Downgrade from M14 to 13?

The answer to all your questions is currently "it depends". On what? On the extra info I hope you can supply to us. What partitions do you have, are you able to supply a view of them in Gparted or from the terminal? What are your machine's specs? Giving the output after you type these 2 lines in the...

You are definitely seeing Gnome icons, both in your file manager and probably your menu icons too. And you are not alone. The following 3 links are just some of many reports in the forums. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=211&t=178045 http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=17806...

Re: Upgrade Mint version, while not touching Win7 partitions

Hi Vanessa I assume the Gparted picture you sent of all your /dev/sda partitions is still basically valid (though the exact used vs. unused size in /sda5 has probably changed by now), and that you already have a bootable DVD or USB with a Mint 17 ISO file on it. Once you've saved the data on that /s...

3) If your first emotions are of frustration and anger, then Linux is probably not for you. Only half agree there. I felt frustration at the start, I bet most of us did. Frustration at my own helplessness. But I was never as frustrated as when I tried to use Windows help algorithms and got stuck in...
