Re: Linux 16 MATE kills wireless Solved

The Dell is probably trying to use the proprietary Broadcom wireless driver instead of the open source b43. Apparently most of the time for the older Broadcom cards b43 works better, and you have to set it yourself after install.

Re: which "Mint" and which apps to replace XP on old laptop

How old is old? :) My old laptop (bought beginning of 06) also had WinXP Pro on it. TurionML32 2GB ram Radeon 200M. I don't use it for all that much, so I decided to fool around with a linux install. I would recommend downloading several different versions and testing them out via live dvd or usb. R...

Re: Accessing share on windows computers on a domain

I don't really remember how sharing worked in Windows 2000, but my first question would be what domain are you providing? You are putting in the windows 2000 local user, domain and password when prompted, right? That is all I have to do, but in my case, I am looking at a share on a Win 7 computer fr...

Re: Linux 16 MATE kills wireless

I am not sure I would bother with downloading programs if you are running via live usb. Actually I didn't even try that since I figured with no persistence in that mode it wouldn't make sense to do it if it worked. Did the version you downloaded include GIMP? Might be a little more complex than need...

Re: LM16 Mate - Display Resolution Lowered [SOLVED]

Ugh, figured it out. Here is the short version: xrandr gave me some odd thing about not being able to get the gamma from the display. Then I noticed when I did lsmod that the radeon driver wasn't running. Yesterday I installed some sensor monitor applets and inadvertantly got one that brought along ...

LM16 Mate - Display Resolution Lowered [SOLVED]

Not sure where exactly to put this forum wise, but hopefully this is something simple. LM16 Mate 64bit on an old Compaq V2000Z. It has a Radeon 200M, and the screen is 1280x768 @ 60hz. Laptop was suspended most of today, woke it up tonight and display was correct. I ended up restarting and at login ...

Re: Linux 16 MATE kills wireless

I would probably try just installing it on either one of the laptops first to see if you can get it working how you like before you bother with the other one. That way you have less to troubleshoot at one time.

Re: Linux 16 MATE kills wireless

The driver manager is there and it shows the broadcom driver. I checked it but it is still not working. I will have another look tonight. Are you talking about the application called "Driver Manager"? It is for managing proprietary drivers. Are you getting a message like this in it: Broadcom Corpor...

Re: The Obligatory "Which Version" Question.

I only have 2GB (shared) on my laptop (Turion64 ML32, Radeon 200M), and I ended up going with Mate on the 64bit Petra. While the 32bit did use less memory (60MB less at idle to my recollection), it didn't seem like it really was much of a tangible penalty. Granted, I don't tend to use this laptop wi...

Re: Can't get smooth playback of 720p 60fps h.264 (mkv, mp4)

I just used the system monitor (mate-system-monitor) to look at the total in the Resources tab. It should be listed in the menu, I think it was a default Favorite, if it isn't there then look in "All Applications" and then "System Tools." Or just search the menu for "System Monitor." It is similar t...

Re: Desktop choices of lesser mortals (and machines)

Time consuming, but it is probably best to try them out yourself on your hardware, either via live usb or you can install a different DE in the same installation. On my old laptop, for instance, out of the Mint16 variants I tried Mate was the fastest, followed by KDE, then Cinnamon. This seemed to f...

Re: Can't get smooth playback of 720p 60fps h.264 (mkv, mp4)

I have an old laptop I have been fidling with and ran into a similar problem. It's a Turion 64 ML32 2gb RAM w/ Radeon Xpress 200M. My first foray into Linux was to try out LM16 Cinnamon 64. It seemed to run ok even on the old laptop until I tried to play a 720p vid in VLC, albeit only one that was e...

Screen doesn't turn on after shut off by power management...

I am pretty new to Linux and have been trying out some different versions. Started with LM16 Cinnamon, then Mate, and then gave KDE a shot. Downloaded both the 64 and 32 bit versions of LM16 KDE and ran them from a live usb. Hardware is pretty old, it is a Compaq V2000z laptop and it has a Turion 64...

Re: Mint 16, Broadcom, No Wireless (or wired) After Install!

The blacklist change did nothing for you, there is no longer any module (aka driver) named bcm43xx. I'm sure what did it was installing the required firmware. For some reason the Driver Manager still shows the original message from the top, despite the fact that wireless seems to be working correct...

Re: Mint 16, Broadcom, No Wireless (or wired) After Install!

I have a Compaq V2000z which comes with a BCM4318 rev 2 and had a similar problem last night when I decided to jump from Win XP to Mint. In my case, wireless didn't work on install (Petra Cinnamon) and the Driver Manager showed at the top: Broadcom Corporation: Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN This device is...
