Re: Can't open external HDD

"I'm still trying to fix the disk with badblocks. I'll update when I get results." Do not fix a drive with badblocks. If you got lucky and got your data recovered, discard that drive immediately (although I would recommend to physically destroy it first, so no one finds it in your trash and either m...

Re: Can't open external HDD

"I wouldn't let Windows anywhere near a problem hard-disk drive!"

NTFS, you cannot correct errors with those on Linux, to my knowledge the NTFS support of Linux is still beta. I'm afraid a good partition doctor software on Windows might the best advice...

Re: Mouse driver trouble since a couple of weeks

My strategy has always been to only upgrade when unavoidable ("never change a running system"). And this mouse behaviour is new, so far everything else runs smoothly, and I cannot pinpoint it to one specific upgrade. So far I only had trouble with the USB mass driver support on kernels 4.15.0.101-10...

Re: Mouse driver trouble since a couple of weeks

Currently I have 4.15.0-112. Is this a known issue with that kernel?

Mouse driver trouble since a couple of weeks

Hi, I am experiencing mouse driver troubles, which I never had before. This is Linux Mint 18.3/Cinnamon, and after a couple of hours of heavy mouse usage (with copy & paste) I lose the properties of objects (i.e. right clicking no longer shows properties), which includes copy & paste in gedit. When ...

Re: MPlayer crashes

Correction, -demuxer is still there, but -audio-demuxer is gone. lavf is still there, but only does video. Also there seems to be no support for audio ids (aid) left. If I call mplayer with --help it does list -aid, but whenever I set -aid with any parameters, the video won't play. So how am I going...

Re: MPlayer crashes

I think I found a clue what goes wrong. Mplayer can no longer be started from a bash - for unknown reasons, and it cannot be started inside a console, because it breaks apart every part of the path to the movie file, und tries to start each of them, which is of course nonsense. Also, mplayer no long...

MPlayer crashes

"MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM." mplayer was set to play a binary DVB-C transport stream (576i): mplayer -demuxer lavf -audio-demuxer lavf -aid 3 FILENAME lavf is the demuxer that must be used on DVB-C, has worked for years. When called with audio id 1, mplayer does not crash, but does...

Re: New FF 78: killall firefox no longer works

Side note: When I start Firefox from a shell, killall still doesn't find processes under the name firefox, but Gnome System Monitor now calls them "Web Content" instead of "MainThread"...

Re: New FF 78: killall firefox no longer works

It's nothing that Canonical have done Not the MainThread thing, yes, but the debugging script did go through their hands. I quote from the script: # Authors: # Alexander Sack <asac@jwsdot.com> # Fabien Tassin <fta@sofaraway.org> # Steve Langasek <steve.langasek@canonical.com> # Chris Coulson <chris...

Re: New FF 78: killall firefox no longer works

I would guess this is the culprit. killall would look and see that this shell script is indeed no longer runing, thus cannot be killed. And looking at this script, it DID GO THROUGH CANONICAL, the copyright marker is there, and it was obviously designed for debugging purposes. Why does canonical she...

Re: New FF 78: killall firefox no longer works

I think (!) that Gnome System Monitor also reported previous FF as "MainThread"... It has nothing to do with what Gnome System Monitor is reporting. It's in the category of stupid-developer-creates-bug. It's a problem with the firefox executable because it happens on all Linux OS'. The man page of ...

Re: New FF 78: killall firefox no longer works

With the new Firefox 78, killall firefox no longer works, but when I use ps ax, I see lots of /usr/lib/firefox/firefox processes! How can this be? And how can I kill them altogether? I wonder if you're encountering what a forum member discovered in this thread , where Firefox seems to show as "Main...

Re: New FF 78: killall firefox no longer works

Gnome System Monitor indeed reports "MainThread", but ps ax clearly says /usr/lib/firefox/firefox. I think (!) that Gnome System Monitor also reported previous FF as "MainThread", but I'm not sure about that. But ps ax has always listed firefox as firefox, and still does today. And I have already tr...

Re: Upgrading RAM

I do also recommend to NOT mix different manufacturers and/or designs. SODIMMs are not "more standardized" than DIMMs. I have seen SODIMMs that do not match although they should. But if you really want to, never mix modules with different numbers of memory chips on them. This almost guarantees timin...

Re: USB mass storage unreliable since 4.15.0-99

I object fusing my posting "Beware of Intels Microcode Update 20200609! USB hiccups !" with my thread about USB mass storage reliability problems. Reason: The problems with Intels malfunctioning microcode update have nothing to with the problems kernel 4.15.0-99 caused! And those were fixed after -1...

Re: Beware of Intels microcode update 20200609 ! USB hiccups!

Since this microcode update installs different patches to different HW, to identify the CPU whose patch disturbs USB, cat /proc/cpuinfo is this: processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 58 model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz stepping : 9 microcode : 0x21 cpu MHz...

Beware of Intels microcode update 20200609 ! USB hiccups!

I reported this in another topic (USB mass storage unreliable), because at first I thought the kernel problems would reappear that I had after the 4.15.0-99 kernel, which vanished with -101. I installed the microcode patch that is distributed though Linux Mint, coming from the PPA at Ubuntu, written...
