Re: Mint and Canon (Printers, Cameras...)

As far as the camera goes, I haven't had any problems getting my SX130IS, SX50HS, and SX620HS to connect using Mint 18.1. Plug the cable in, press the review button on the camera, and the SD card opens as a removable drive. Same with my Nikon DSLRs.

Re: trouble with SDcards

I'm not sure if it's a driver issue or if additional circuitry or something is needed to work with SDHC/SDXC cards. Either way, our internal readers are from before those cards existed. I just use an external reader on my old PC.

Re: trouble with SDcards

How old is the laptop and what's the card's capacity? My old eMachines desktop's built-in reader can't handle large-capacity (SDHC/SDXC) cards, so I have to use an external USB card reader or plug the camera into the PC.

Re: An unpleasant experience

My (refurb) PC came with Win10 Pro. I immediately installed Mint 18.1 MATE as dual boot. Last weekend, I tried downloading the Windows Cumulative Update using my cellphone as a modem, which usually works great (at least 1.4MB/sec)--and after 4 hours, only 780MB or so of the 990+ MB update had downlo...

Are you getting an icon on your desktop for the Fire when you connect it? If so, can you right-click on it and select Mount?

Re: I've been ruined

Under Windows the terminal window is called "Command Prompt". Or PowerShell. I just installed Mint 18.1 MATE as dual-boot with Windows 10 on a Dell 990 refurb (Core i7, 8GB RAM, 2TB HDD), so I tried to check my C:\ properties to see if it was GPT or MBR. (BIOS said UEFI was disabled, but this is my...

Re: Fountain pens and carpal tunnel syndrome

About 15 years ago my dad started making pens as a hobby (turned wood for the outside), and ended up selling quite a few at a local office supply store. The ball-point pens used either Cross refills (for the "Mont Blanc" style pens) or Parker refills (for the others)--we cut two of the ones that use...

Did you enable bootloader unlocking in Settings/Developer Options?

Re: Your computers and Operating systems

I took Computer Programming in high school, 1979. We used Teletype terminals connected to a Honeywell mainframe to do BASIC programming and stored our programs on paper tape. Around that time, our local Olson Electronics store got a Commodore PET. My dad would go there to buy electronic parts and I ...

Re: Mint saved the day

Something similar happened where I work. Laptop running Windows 7 got all goofed up, the laptop sat in the dispatch office for months collecting dust, our manager was a second away from tossing it into a Dumpster. I rescued it, plugged in my Linux Mint 17.3 XFCE Live USB and got the laptop to boot, ...

Re: Can I copy my HOME folder to another computer?

I can't verify that ALL settings and stuff (installed programs, etc.) would transfer, but I have done something similar with a few of my computers--I didn't copy the home folder itself but I copied the documents, pictures, downloads, .mozilla, and .thunderbird folders to the other computers' home fo...

Re: Firefox problem

In English Gib is short for Gibraltar, oder is a bad smell, der is said when someone says something stupid, etc! So translating "Something about Gibraltar terminal (train or airport?) smells bad and is crass". Very helpful - not! Copy the German text and paste it in Google Translate. Output = Enter...

Re: Meet my NEW laptop... sorta

I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 that has pretty much identical specifications. Bought it from my brother for $15 and installed Mint 17.1 XFCE on it, and though it's nowhere near fast (it's faster than when it ran Windows 7 Starter, though) it works OK for email and web.

Re: Ooops... I've re-formatted my boot sector

What a schoolboy error.. I was using gparted in a rush last night and accidentally re-formatted my boot partition. Now when I boot, I get this: grub-rescue.jpg I'm happy to re-install Mint, but want to know if there is a way I can backup the files form my desktop? My drive is encrypted using the st...

Re: Problems with SD reader on laptop

I have an old eMachines minitower with a SD card reader built in. That reader won't read cards with more than 2GB capacity, so I use a cheap USB SD card reader. I know it isn't an ideal solution for someone who doesn't want to carry a card reader around, but it's easier than carrying a camera cable ...

Not exactly "solved," but fixed: I reinstalled. Copied some folders from the backed-up home folder to the new one and all is well again. I can imagine what fun I'd have had if it was Windows!

Goofed up after last update (fixed by reinstall)

I've been using Linux Mint 17 Qiana since it was released and have updated with no problems--until a few days ago. There was a message in the Update Manager saying something hadn't installed because of a problem with the package (to the best of my memory), so I tried again and everything appeared to...

Re: Connecting Android Phone to LM17

In your phone's Settings, Storage, tap USB Computer Connection (upper right of the page) and make sure MTP is checked. If PTP (camera) is checked, you only see DCIM and its contents.
