Re: Writing a script to test open ports for local host

Hi :) You have a typo here: elsif echo "port $port not connected" when it should be elseif Why not use something like nmap? nmap -p 1-50 localhost | grep open | grep -o '[0-9]*' That will scan localhost ports 1-50, grep for a line from the output with 'open,' and grep again to show what port it is, ...

Re: LM 17.3 KDE removal

Hi JeanJavaBean, You don't need to reinstall Mint completely to add a DE (Desktop Environment) to it :) Open up Synaptic package manager and search for 'mint-meta-cinnamon', right click and choose 'Mark for installation' and it will show you a list of packages that it will install. After it's done d...

Re: No gthumb?

gthumb isn't there when you search for it in the menu?

If it's not, type the following into the terminal to install it:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gthumb
It will ask you for your password. Please note that the password does not show when you type it. This is for security reasons.

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 17.2

@_John : It should have appeared in your Update Manager under the "Edit" menu. I know but it hasn't. Have reset sources etc but no luck (I had upgraded to Cinnamon 2.6 pre 17.2 though...) John, please do not ask for support in announcements. If you're still having trouble, open another topic in the...

You'll have to talk to the channel Ops for that channel on freenode. SpotChat and freenode are two different networks

Re: Ubuntu pandering for cash

A reminder to everyone: You can disagree with someone without having to attack them. It takes a bit more thinking before you post, but hopefully you're doing that anyway, instead of going the easy route (claiming everyone who disagrees with you is a troll). To be clear: Attacks on people will not be...

Re: updating applications / updating mint os

Hi matthejl8, Prior to running linux, I did some research on how applications are handled and their updates and was under the impression that they will all be updated to their most current version through the "update manager"...is this right? Or will I need to set it up? By default, packages at leve...

Is it as safe as other distros for secure transactions like shopping, banking, i know nothing is 100% secure but would you or do you use it as such.. Yes, Linux Mint is as safe as other distros. Did someone at unbuntu or another distro say they would never use linuxmint for secure transactions. Yes...

Re: Separate subforums for "solved" issues

Would it be possible for there to be, under the main support forums (e.g. Newbie Questions, Installation and Boot, etc.) subforums dedicated to *just* solved issues? Short answer: No. Longer answer: In order to do that, we would have to go through the ~900,000 posts on the board to see if they were...

Re: [Chat] Still keep a Windows? Speak out your reason

Compatibility testing. Where I work the servers are Linux, and my IT staff all run Linux somehow, on a VM or installed to their hard drives. But most other computers run Windows. I need to make sure everything is talking to each other how they're supposed to.

Soon we plan on deleting the thousands of unanswered posts that clutter up the forums. There are many such posts that go back to 2007, and we think some "Spring cleaning" is long overdue. Don't worry: We will NOT be deleting unanswered posts that are recent.* We will also be manually deleting them, ...

I can already see any responses by going to "View your posts" on the upper left of the forum page. Being emailed about each and every response would clutter my inbox. :) Not only that, but do you know how many people reply to various topics a day? Latest estimates puts it at around 350... a day (fo...
