Re: antivirus

I did have to convince MS to give me a new product code as the old one would not work on the VM (I did not not have to buy it however) - but they did give it to me. You got lucky... :) But the biggest issue remains the availability of Wine-using software vs. software installed in a VM. You start Wi...

Re: antivirus

1) The issues on the Linux desktop won't be solved overnight because people suddenly in the last couple of yrs, realized the hard way that Win7 reaches end-of-life. Hopefully a newer blood will bring some good ideas alongside, but i'd expect such to be a quite a bit time-consuming process. Never im...

Re: antivirus

Untrue. You can try to prove your statement, but you won't succeed. I can't prove it, indeed. It's just a feeling I got wandering the distant shores of Linus since, well, check my inscription date. :) (I've been in contact with, and used Linux professionally since the start of the century though, s...

Re: antivirus

Surely there is a correlation between that mentality, and the fact that the average Jane & Joe out there uses...well, Windows? It depends on what you actually mean, since the relation between ignorance and Windows isn't obvious at first glance. I do agree there is a correlation (not necessarily imp...

Re: antivirus

Running Windows in a VM is no more complicated then Wine in my experience There is one drawback, you have to start the VM when you need it, and also running it takes a lot more overhead than just running the program in Wine. I never had problems with Wine. Agreed, most programs are slower, but that...

Re: antivirus

Would it really get that far if it expects to land on a full installation of Windows, not something like [not even] an emulator? That depends a lot on how well-crafted it is. Actually it only depends on if it does call functions Wine does not provide. Heck, Win10 malware often doesn't even work on ...

Re: antivirus

So run WIndows via dual boot or in a VM. Too complicated for most users, and too much hassle for frequent use (not to mention a VM requires you to pay for a Windows license). You know what average people do when security gets too much in their way: They just break it, keys under the flower pot near...

Re: antivirus

Yes. That's why I strongly advise *not* to install any Windows emulator like Wine I fully understand your point of view (and even agree on a theoretical level), but it is difficult to put into practice for Windows defectors (I'm one too): You have a lot of software (often expensive) you'd like to k...

Re: antivirus

Speaking about antivirus on Mint - I do have something I'd like to pick your brains on: Assuming you run Wine (for whatever reason, let's just assume you need to), don't you have to also run an antivirus against Windows malware, since it could run through Wine and create problems? I agree Wine isn't...

Re: Know about any good PIM program for Mint?

Yes, that sounds promising, but the version in the Mint repository is too old and doesn't do Outlook imports yet. (That been said I'm still on 17.2, but since I will install 19.1 soon, I'll definitely check if that one got a newer version, which does Outlook imports.) Else I'd have to compile it mys...

Know about any good PIM program for Mint?

If anybody has a nagging feeling of deja vu , it's just that I already asked the same question 3 years ago. At that time there was no satisfying solution, but things might have changed since, so here goes: I'm searching for a MS Outlook-compatible PIM ("Personal Information Manager", a calendar and...

Re: Difference between Mint 19 Cinnamon "64bit" and "64bit-v2"?

Thanks guys.
I had seen this, but since it doesn't mention explicitly what the updated ISOs would look like, I wanted to be sure there is nothing else.

Difference between Mint 19 Cinnamon "64bit" and "64bit-v2"? [Solved]

Sorry, don't know if this is the right forum to ask this, but:

I see there is a "linuxmint-19-cinnamon-64bit.iso", and a "linuxmint-19-cinnamon-64bit-v2.iso".

Could somebody please tell me what the difference is?
I didn't find any explanation on the website.

Thanks in advance.

That's unfortunate. :?
Still, it adds a little hurdle, doesn't it.

Re: chmod giving strange results in Mint 17.3 Cinnamon

Yes, I got all that, thanks. My point is security, preventing stuff downloaded to be executed (despite it being executable). I guess I can always add a noexec line in /etc/fstab, but I'm lazy and hadn't understood the "Exec" part of Linux permissions, so I thought I could do something similar just w...

Re: chmod giving strange results in Mint 17.3 Cinnamon

Thanks. So there is no way to prevent stuff from being executed in a specific folder? Everybody needs to have execution permissions to be able to put stuff in there?

chmod giving strange results in Mint 17.3 Cinnamon [solved]

This one has left me scratching my head. I wanted to make my "Downloads" folder non-execute, meaning just "read-write" for myself and "read" for everyone else. AFAIK the command to do this would be chmod 644 Downloads , wouldn't it. After doing that chmod, a ls-l shows the folder's permissions are n...
