Re: Very strange networking issue.
This sounds exactly like an issue I am having since upgrading from 17 to 18.3 to 19. Since 18.3, this laptop and only this laptop can only stay connected to Steam long enough to play 2 rounds of Rocket League. If I completely leave steam and log back in, I am fine for another couple of rounds. My da...

Re: 17.3 upgrade Cinnamon crashes
Here is something REALLY wierd and it is more to what I stated previously. When I booted my laptop last, I got the black screen. I simply walked away from it for an hour or two. When I came back to it, I just pressed Enter but I think any key would have worked. It seems that after the screen locks o...

Ugh...Mint is disappointing, suddenly
Been using Mint for years. I decided to upgrade to 17.3 and lost the ability to use my GT650 NVidia graphics. Tried everything. No dice... it's hit or miss. Sometimes it will work, most the time it won't. I saw that updates were available, including Grub, so I updated. Now in Grub, Linux Mint is not...

Re: 17.3 upgrade Cinnamon crashes
Try this.... this is working for me. When grub comes up, press e to edit. Instead of adding nomodeset, backspace from the end of the line through 'quiet splash' (Get rid of the $vt thing and quiet splash). Cntrl X Let it do its thing... WHen you get to the black screen and your computer isn't doing ...

Re: 17.3 upgrade Cinnamon crashes
I have spent the last 3 days trying to get my NVidia card to work.
I can only access Cinnamon with Nouveau driver.

Re: cinnamon crashes...
Yeah... mine was crashing too. People seem to assume that when you crash during login, its your video settings. That wasn't the case for me. When cinnamon crashed, I tried the following command: cinnamon --replace That reloads the desktop and the terminal will display any errors/messages. Doing so g...

Re: [SOLVED]Mint 17.1 Crashes to Fallback mode
Here's how it was [SOLVED]. I had tried the command cinnamon --replace to try and reload cinnamon. When I researched my errors (cinnamon: error while loading shared libraries: libwayland-egl.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory), it took me to this page: http://forum.linux...

Re: Mint 17.1 Crashes to Fallback mode
Spent hours just getting my NVidia video working again (followed instructions by greencat @ http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=151694). :( I didn't have to do that before... not sure why I had to now. Only difference I did from his steps was I used driver 346 and set the bumblebee.conf...

- Create a new user and log in as that new user. Does the problem persist? Created new user... same result - Install *all* level 4 and 5 updates (not just the security ones, but all of them. Chances are that some X.org update has healing powers); There are no updates available of any kind. - Instal...

[SOLVED]Mint 17.1 Crashes to Fallback mode
I know this topic has been posted many times and is typically a result of not configuring a video driver correctly after installing Linux Mint. I have been using my laptop for MONTHS without issue. My steam games work perfectly(Still). I really don't think this issue is related to video since the vi...

Re: <SOLVED>Dual Boot Install-No Partitions Shown
Good job finding that and getting the install done! Was about to suggest similar solution, but you beat me to it and found something I wasn't aware of. Now, sit back and relax -- ordeal is over ... finally. Hope rest of Mint experience goes much smoother for you. Am LOVING the look and feel of Mint...

Re: Dual Boot Issue Also
Spent most of the day on this issue and decided to "Zap" the GPT using the windows version of "Fixparts" after finding the following info: For safety, back up your MBR by typing "dd if=/dev/sda of=sda-backup.mbr bs=512 count=1" and then copying the resulting file (sda-backup.mbr) to a USB flash driv...

Windows is still fully functional.
Note: When doing sudo parted /dev/sda print, answering 'No' just returns me to the prompt.

Re: Dual Boot Issue Also
When using Parted, I do: #sudo parted /dev/sda print I received a message stating that it has a GPT but does not have a valid fake msdos partition table. It asks me if this is GPT and I answer 'Yes'. It then says: Error. The backup GPT table is corrupt, but the primary appears Ok, so that will be us...

Booted to live CD and did the 'ls /sys/firmare'.
Result is 'acpi memmap'.
I will check out "stray GPT bits" at the link you provided and see what I can find out.

Here is an image showing the partition table in Win8.1 and the free space that I created. partitions.JPG After booting to the Mint 16 Live CD, I went into "Disks" and can see the partitions that were shown in Win8.1 DSC_0045.jpg When I select Install, my entire drive shows as free. Note: Some bios have a setting whether to use the onboard video or PCI.
If you do use the PCI card and do not get a favorable result, your next step might be to check for such a setting in the bios.

<SOLVED>Dual Boot Install-No Partitions Shown
I have a Dell Laptop with Windows 8.1. I decided that I would like to give Mint a try and created a Mint Live CD. I went into WIndows and shrank my 1TB drive by 120GB to create freespace(dskmgmt). Windows shows that I have the following: ---System Reserved 350MB NTFS (Simple/Basic) ----C: 838.98 GB ...
