[solved][ connect 2 pc via cat5 without losing wifi internet

Been fussing with this for a few days to the point where I've tried so much I've completely befuddled myself. I have a windows 10 and a linux mint 18.3 Mate computer. I connected them with a cat5 cable. I edited my linux ethernet setting to give a "manual" static ip 192.168.0.33. I then went to my w...

SOLVED: script to rename a file to a random alphanumeric

Looking for a script to rename .rar file to a random alphanumeric with a unchanging prepended string. Example: a.rar renamed to hbox - eeYohv7kael2agheishe9ocuT4 right now I use pwgen to get the alphnum and manually rename. I have used this previously for fname in *.rar do mv $fname 'hbox - '${RANDO...

Re: Rar/Par folder script - how?

Thanks to all but while the script looked promising, it was too complicated to decipher and did not work in my setup. As for Caja I'm easily willing to skip a file manager as stated and run a script from the command line. Seems that would negate the caja problem. I can do some of the steps from the ...

Re: Rar/Par folder script - how?

You are correct, I did not think about that. I'm using caja 1.18.5. There's a folder home/xxx/.config/caja/scripts. Any script put in there is visible when right clicking and selecting scripts. http://tinyimg.io/i/2vqtG8F.png well crap, I just realized that communicating the location to the script m...

SOLVED: Rar/Par folder script - how?

Hi, I've managed a few very basic scripts to do thing over the years but honestly each time I have to relearn the little I know. If someone could help, and by help I mean do, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to right click on a folder. have that folder archived to a single RAR file, with a randomly gener...

Re: Caja doesn't like cancelled copy task

Lots of good information here. I did find that if I hit pause the file in transit finishes before the pause takes effect. If I then cancel everything is ok. I now use double commander for file copies and xfe for a few functions that the other FMs don't have. One is being able to expand all the direc...

[solved] Caja doesn't like cancelled copy task

I"ve noticed this a while back. If I on cancel on the transfer progress window/file operation while copying a number of files the copy operation no longer works. If I try to copy anything else nothing happens. I've tried the copy/move to, copy paste, cut paste; they no longer work. I have to kill ca...

Re: Caja expand multiple folders in list view

Thanks. The ebook was just an example of one instancem the one I was dealing with when I decided to post.. I really want to do it so I can open and see the contents of many folders at once. I have decades of stuff on drives and not all of it is well organized. It'd be nice to be able to look at the ...

Caja expand multiple folders in list view

I am at a loss on this one. Is there a way to select then expand multiple folders while in list view? My ebooks are in folders of their own and I want to copy just the ebook files not the folders. I can search for .epub but I have many formats and that is intelligent since I only want certain folder...

Mate 18.3 and Private Internet Access

Until a few months ago I had one pc running Mint Mate 17. Used PIA with no issues for almost a few years really with very little issue. I recently had a drive failure so upgraded my pc to 18.3 and added a new pc to my home setup also running 18.3 - so both have fresh installs. last month I started h...

Re: VPN Freezes Nemo

Not sure about the nemo problem but I've been running PIA for over 3 years on my mint pc. Recently I broke my mint 17 install and did a fresh install with 18.3 Mate, also addes a second pc with 18.3. Have been having trouble with PIA ever since. I've upgraded and have been back and forth with suppor...

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

That said, the poster should not assume that the default "N" is the best choice but to continue on with a "y" is fine, but when all is done, an "apt-get auto-remove" would be a good thing to do. Aborting just wasted all the time spent to this point. Thanks, but I wasn't given the choice. mintupdate...

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

Not sure what constitutes a conflict where I have to manually remove items. 2159 upgraded, 435 newly installed, 39 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 1,910 MB of archives. After this operation, 1,536 MB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue? [Y/n] N Abort. Do I have t...

Re: Timeshift wants 1.3T or more to backup

Finally got it working. I excluded my extra drives but it still reported needing 1.3T. I logged out and in. Still 1.3T. Rebooted same thing. Went in to setting and unchecked the automatic daily backup (which I had set manually from settings since I couldn't get far enough into the wizard to set it t...

Re: Timeshift wants 1.3T or more to backup

I have three drives installed and I had to go into timeshift settings under filters and exclude the drives I don't want backed up. Yeah, thought about that, but I unmounted all but the system drive so timeshift shouldn't have seen them I'm assuming. But it still wanted over 1.3T. I'll go in and try...

Re: Timeshift wants 1.3T or more to backup

Read that one a the other day. Didn't really pertain as that person was able to do a backup. I can't even get that far. Guess I'll look into CLI commands for now. I have 2 pcs and the other one worked fine but doesn't have as many drives installed.

[SOLVED] Timeshift wants 1.3T or more to backup

Maybe I don't understand Timeshift. I have my Mint 18.3 mate system installed on a 120G drive. I have 3 other drives with various partitions installed in the machine. I want to use TS to back up to one of those drives. The drive I select has 600G free formatted ext4. TS gives me an error stating I d...

thanks Marziano. I'll look into them. Never really did anything with SPM before. Time to learn something new. I'll follow up when I'm done. Danneauxs Edit: Worked. Reinstalled mate-applets and fixed it all. I didn't realize that reinstalling mate-panel wouldn't take care of that. Now I will know to ...
