Re: I've made a mess - desperate!

Sorry, I guess when you wrote 'desperate!' you had a different definition of the word in mind.

It's your computer you do it your way.

Then again, I've never had a problem setting up a printer and a scanner in Mint, they just work when I plug them in 'out of the box'.

Re: I've made a mess - desperate!

Thanks to everyone who posted! I've managed to get it to boot from a Mint DVD. I'm making room on a back-up disk now, and will use gparted to make a partition on there. I will then back up the home directory. Then I'll try to fix the video drivers. I'm getting errors from X itself when it tries to ...

Question to Admins,

Why are the old unsupported versions like the OP is using, still downloadable?

Re: Very early error in LMDE2 installation

I've had no end of troubles with LMDE 2, just trying to get it to run in Live mode as well. Tonight I installed AntiX 15 Beta 1 "MX" ( http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=09181 ) which like LMDE 2 is based on Debian Jessie (8.2), on a blank hard drive. It's so tame and installed very sweetly. May I sugge...

Re: Testing other Distros

Debian do that too Pepi, the main distro is "install only" but there is also a Live version which is ......er, live.
Strangely, on my PC, even though LMDE2 is based on Debian, Debian will run great but LMDE2 just won't. :)

Mint Security

Abstract from UK proposed legislation : (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-34719569) "Almost certainly the way in which the firms could co-operate would be to turn off the encryption and give people the illusion it is still taking place," said Prof Peter Sommer. But he added that a simpler method...

Re: Should I upgrade my kernel?

Mint 16 is no longer supported and is well out of date. Switch to Mint 17 which is an LTS supported until 2019.

Re: Pressing "Switch User" in Live CD session leaves you stu

I think the ability of most Linux distros being able to run as a live session is so you can see what it looks like and how it behaves in practice before installing it. The fact that some of the features may not work as expected in a live session is to be expected, at least we get a good idea before ...

Re: chinese laptop - will Linux Mint work?

No disrespect intended but even since I was a boy (60 yrs ago) 'Made in China' on anything was taken as a warning for shoddy workmanship! Some things never change!

(I have bad vibes about the new Sino UK deal where China will build nuclear power stations here!)

Re: No LiveUSB support, DVD doesnt go past GRUB

In any dual boot Windows and Linux system, Windows MUST be installed first because it takes over the boot manager. Then install Linux which as we all know is far more generous and allows any installed system to be selected at boot time. On your system you will need to re-install Linux, although some...

That's the first thing to check, that you have a clean copy of the system.

Without that assurance a million fixes won't fix the system!

Phew! At one point I was really regretting posting the dd method when you said it had all gone wrong! So glad it's all turned out well in the end! :D :D

Re: Feeling stupid... What OS should I install first?

I found this 'how to' which should help but obviously you'll need to substitute Mint when they talk about Ubuntu. http://lifehacker.com/5934942/how-to-dual-boot-linux-on-your-mac-and-take-back-your-powerhouse-apple-hardware Alternatively try this, http://www.howtogeek.com/187410/how-to-install-and-d...

Re: Help with disk to disk cloning.

@ Andrew, it is easy using dd, that's why I put it there, because you were afraid of trying it.

That's the beauty of the command line, or Terminal.

(Not that I have the brains to work it all out!)

Re: Help with disk to disk cloning.

Here's a document from several years ago (dated 2009 on my computer) explaining how easy DD is to use. " I have just installed a bigger hard drive in my main PC at home and have looked at t he various options of 'cloning' my old drive to the new. I considered Norton Ghost and even downloaded the tri...

Re: Persistent Live or Live on USB

Be careful using ClamAV if you are using it to scan another drive, in the past it came up with something when I used it to scan a copy of XP. When I removed the reported items I discovered too late they weren't viruses and were integral parts of the operating system! Better to let Windows scan for v...

Re: prevent autostart

The goal of Linux is not "Linux on every desktop". Already in the first lines the article gets it wrong. "Linux on every desktop" is exactly the strategy of IBM: http://www.zdnet.com/article/intel-the-year-of-the-linux-desktop-is-here/ . But I will read through the interesting article on the way to...
