Re: [SOLVED] 41 updates since yesterday?

Question for you. why stay with 19.3 and not 20 ?? I can answer that one. Personally, I'll migrate to 20 when it's good and stable (i.e: 20.3). There was a time when I enjoyed crawling under the hood with Nano; these days, I need a reliable working machine in the same way that I need a reliable wor...

Ok that's normal. I was wondering if lpadmin was missing.

I was wondering if that was significant.

Re: Getting to OpenGL 4.0(+)

Yes, I saw that v. 4.5. Not sure what to think now. Thanks. Don't worry it's confusing. From my system. My understanding is that the card supports 4.5, but reports compatibility with 3.0 for backwards compatibility with older applications. Oh wow, thanks for that reply, but that System76 Kudu blew ...

Permission problem?

Code: Select all

find $HOME ! -user $USER -type f
A possible fix

Code: Select all

sudo chown -Rc $USER:$USER $HOME
I ran your commands, logged out and in, but no joy: I'm still getting prompted for credentials to print, or the job vanishes, depending. Thank you anyway.

Suddenly, I need my password to print.

With no warning, and no apparent reason, I now have to enter my password (occasionally, my username too) to execute any print job. Some apps evidently aren't sophisticated enough to spawn a dialogue, so their submitted jobs just disappear. Anyway, this is a new thing, and I have no idea yet how to f...

Re: Physical Hard Drive Switch?

I appreciate everybody's input, but my question still stands. & I have given you the answer....after all if it is just an electronic switch then, some time in the future, Windows X will, undoubtedly, be able to turn that on.. Okay, it looks like this is not the proper venue for my question after al...

Re: Physical Hard Drive Switch?

If you are really that worried then have Windows 10 installed on 1 USB drive & Linux installed on another. Then only plug in the USB OS you want to run. For me.. Pierre's advice would be good to go.. but I don't worry about an great deal of 'stuff' that other folks do.. :D Technically that would wo...

Re: Physical Hard Drive Switch?

The answer is in my dual boot system on a single disk, I hardly connect Win 10 to the net, hardly use win10 and have never updated it in last 4 years. Ah, but the next time you do, and let Ten update, even inadvertently, might be the time it pimpslaps your machine. I appreciate everybody's input, bu...

I know a case where Win 10 update destroyed dual boot Windows. The net also has similar cases.

Exactly, and somehow I don't see Ten getting any less Draconian.

Re: Physical Hard Drive Switch?

sure - - and that is an fair assessment of that win-10 system, as well. :( but, that method will work, just fine, and since the LinuxMint is using ext4 formatting, - - then it can't be seen, natively by that win-10 system 8) without any extra drivers being installed, that is, within the win-10 syst...

Re: Physical Hard Drive Switch?

you should be able to do that in firmware - - that is the PCs BIOS - - via the F12 Boot Function key ie: use that F12 to select between the two different HDDs at start-up. & that way, each system is independent, of the other system. 8) I don't trust 10 that much; I want my real OS (i.e: Mint) compl...

Physical Hard Drive Switch?

I want to build a dual-boot machine again, and at this point I'm pretty much stuck with Windows 10, but I don't trust it; I've read too many stories of 10 updates trashing conventional dual-boot schemes. What I have in mind is a system with two drives with completely independent single-boot OSes and...

Tina x64 XFCE: Temporarily Disable Automount?

I'm trying to build a bootable Windows 7 install disk with WoeUSB, but every time Woe creates partitions and filesystems on the disk, whatever does the automounting senses them and mounts them immediately. This is normally convenient, helpful behaviour, but in this case it causes Woe to crash and I ...

Dedicated Video Streaming App I Can Watch Financial News On?

I'm a trader (in Linux, somewhat rare I gather), and I'm looking for an app I can stream financial news with. Streaming within a browser seems to be unreliable in Linux for whatever reasons, so I'm looking for a dedicated app. Please assist, thanks.

"recordmydesktop" makes nearly perfect desktop recordings, but completely lacks audio support. Are there any cli apps that work similarly, but record sound as well? Thank you.

Re: New ASUS lappy, two ssds, but can't see both at a time.

First, Windwoes 10 doesn't currently have native support for Linux file systems, but this may change with the 1903 release. As for linux not being able to see the Windwoes 10 installation, that "little board" you refer to is possibly an Intel Optane device, which linux cannot see because your BIOS ...

[SOLVED}New ASUS lappy, two ssds, but can't see both at a time.

I just got an ASUS TUF FX705GM to replace my dead System76, and I must say, I think this one is a keeper, but there's a new technology at play here that I'm not familiar with, and I need some pointers. It came with a 500gig Intel SSD with Windows 10 on a little board. I put my old Samsung Evo 850 th...
