Re: Dropbox - how to move folder ?

Thanks for the replies. My dropbox icon had gone missing which had confused me! This fixed it : dropbox stop sudo dropbox start I created a non encrypted partition in ext4 format on my usb stick and its now moving the dropbox files using the dropbox preferences from right clicking the icon. What a p...

Dropbox - how to move folder ?

I have dropbox on an encrypted home folder. Dropbox is dropping support for encrypted folders so I need to move it. Unlike windows there is no gui which you can launch to move the folder onto an unencrypted drive. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall dropbox but it doesn't give me an option to mo...

Re: My upgrade experience

I haven't bothered with a clean install and all three of my machines are working perfectly. Not only that but I've saved going through the tedious manual amendments to get some rather obscure hardware working. There are reasons not to clean install - if it works it works.

Re: Mint 19 Opinions and Reviews

Three systems upgraded (not clean install) no problems after a week or so. One or two programs don't work in wine any more, not a big deal.

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

Would be nice if some more choices of menu bar could be added, the defaults are quite small from an accessibility point of view. If you mean the window decorations see here for instructions to download Mint 19 compatible versions of the default 18.3 set https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=...

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

I had to roll back a few days to before the mesa update on my laptop, then it went smoothly. Updated 2 out of 3 systems so far. One took quite a long time but eventually updated all packages, after requesting my password a few times. No major problems - wine is broken for a couple of programs but I ...

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.

I like tinkering with operating systems, but not if I'm using them for work. Hence having cutting edge distros and stable distros is very useful. I use mint for its stability. Sure beats windows 10 which can be working one moment, and broken with the next update. I no longer use windows for work as ...

Re: How come the new LInux Kernels suggested by the update manager do not work

Often it's either the WiFi driver or graphics driver that haven't been updated that cause the later kernels to fail. When they are updated it will install.

Re: SIM cards

I've got one working in my t410 laptop on mint with a giffgaff sim (O2). Took a little fiddling with the software for my particular card, but works ok. No luck with the gps (although that works on windows).

Re: Security notice: Meltdown and Spectre

On my three linux mint systems most of the upgrades are ok. However on my t410 laptop with nvidia graphics - kernel 4.13 will not install and gives an error for compiling the nvidia driver. Yesterday I got an update to the nvidia 340 driver and settings - this was supposed to enable a patch for kern...

Re: How to install the Nvidia proprietary drivers in LinuxMint

Just a heads up that installing the 340 nvidia driver update that came out today (to patch kernel 4.14 and 4.15) caused my mint 18.3 system to fall over. Cinnamon would crash on start up and not run with acceleration. The system tray wouldn't load and the menu wasn't loading correctly. Fortunately I...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners

I wonder how intel will fare outside of the US with regard to consumer law on this. A slow down of 30% due to a design flaw surely must be grounds for legal action.

Re: Non-Beta version of skype? Mint 18.2 KDE

I use skype to do music lessons with pupils. The old linux client worked fine - but the new beta is hopeless. Keeps disconnecting, unreliable , and even managed to lock up my pc a couple of times. I'm now using google hangouts on chrome - which is far better. Thanks microsoft for ruining a perfectly...

Re: Anti-virus and Linux.

One of the problems with anti virus solutions is that they can themselves become a target due to the elevated privileges they need. Even on windows its doubtful that anything other than windows defender is much use - according to at least several developers of web browsers. So on windows I used wind...

Re: Add 'Extra Pane' toggle button to File Manager Toolbar

Yes please add this. I suggested it a while back but nothing happened. Its very annoying to have to move back and forth to the menu or F3. It would speed up my work flow having a toggle in nemo for the extra pane. :D

Re: My experience with LM (1 month)

If you're unlucky with hardware it can be a pain - but so can windows although less frequently. I don't have any slower browsing on linux - did you enable hardware acceleration in your browsers ? Most times its disabled by default but works ok. In fact windows 10 is slower on my skylake pc for brows...

Re: Windows 10: Combining two user partitions

Its not a bad idea to keep your data on a separate partition to the OS. Not necessary - but if the OS gets messed up you still have your data files. I'm not familiar with ASUS but that might be why. Sometimes windows is set up with an additional small partition for reinstalling the OS. There is no a...
