Re: Full Install to USB Drive: Four Options

@somtam I have an Asus ROG Strix laptop with a usb-c/thunderbolt 3 connection and I haven't even been able to get a live CD to boot from this port. It will work from any of the 3 usb 3.1 A connectors, just not the usb-c/thunderbolt 3 connector. Sorry, but I have no help for you, just some info for m...

Re: Easily set drives to mount automatically at boot

If you are referring to the highlighted drive in the image, it is the esp, it is required for booting on a UEFI computer. It is not for linux or windows in particular, it is for any OS to boot on a UEFI system.

Re: Compatibility issue

I would wonder if you verified the iso, and then perhaps to use a different program to write the iso to the USB stick. Certain authors have some issues with how they work when on the USB stick, another issue I just saw on the forums was resolved by changing from multibootUSB as the author to Rufus. ...

Re: Unable to dual boot Windows 10 with Mint on second drive

If that is the plan, be advised Mint will use the first EFI partition anyway, even if you expressly tell it to use the second (it's a bug). There are two ways to prevent that. The first is to remove (or disconnect) the Windows drive while installing. @pbear Actually EFI using the first esp it finds...

Re: How do I install LM using GPT partitioning with / and /home partitions?

As you say, use Gparted to create gpt table to begin. This essentially allows you to create many partitions. I create an /boot/efi of near 100 Mib. I don't use a separate /home, though, I create a /mnt/data and use symlinks to it. The /home also holds configuration data, which can be helpful to save...

Re: [SOLVED] Dual Boot on 2 different discs I install step I where grub has to be placed ?

For the difference it makes, UEFI is designed to use the first ESP it sees to load the bootloader into, even if it is not what you set during install. So if Win is on SDA or SDB with an ESP, it will go there even if you tell the installer to use SDD. I found it is best to install windows without the...

Re: Partition Warning

Is this an mbr or gpt disk. You can click view in the menu bar and select information to open a new panel to the left that will show this. To be honest, I didn't think Windows XP was capable of installing in gpt/uefi mode, or mbr/uefi mode. In fact, to install Windows 7 in uefi mode, I had to alter ...

Re: PC boots straight to Windows 10 instead of dual boot with Linux Mint

@linuxheid You had successful boots in linux and windows while the firmware was set to UEFI in lieu of Legacy. These are two different methods of running/installing an OS. Keep it as it was when it had worked set to UEFI. Windows updates regularly overwrite grub. The fix is fairly simple to reinstal...

Re: Considerations multi booting on an SSD

Hello bigal, Well to start with you don't need /boot for a UEFI system, so that is wasted space. The esp will handle it at about 500 mb max size. If you are installing Ubuntu based distros you can install from the terminal with ubiquity -b to install sans grub leaving your first install in control o...

@ajgreeny. Sure thing, glad to help.

I have installed Fedora, openSUSE, and a few others I don't recall at the moment, without grub as well.

This method works fine for me:

I use this data partition for multi distro installs with one data partition shared among all distros, it works great.

Re: [solved] KDE Neon stole my Mint boot menu

This is a "feature" of UEFI installs. No matter where you tell the installer to put grub, it will search for an esp in order of how the drives are attached to the motherboard, so sda, sdb, etc.. You could have installed KDE neon from the terminal with the ubiquity -b command and it installs without ...

Re: Entire system freeze.

Okay, verifying the iso is a great move. Well done there! How about when you boot the DVD, running the last item "check the integrity of the medium"? (to ensure the burning went appropriately). Did you have a separate /home that you share between your 17.3 and 19.1 installs? I actually create a sepa...

Re: Entire system freeze.

So my next question is: did you create a new partition for 19.1 as you can still boot into 17.3?

I would further ask: did you verify the iso?

Re: Entire system freeze.

I would also query if you performed a reformat (erase drive) and reinstall or used the existing /home. If you used the existing /home it includes settings for mate as well as your data. Installing cinnamon using an existing /home with settings for mate can cause corruption to your settings and give ...
