Linx Mint 19.1 Nvidia failed then found a solution installation notes.

Hi! Happy Sunday! I spent the last twenty-four hours upgrading Linux Mint 18.3 to 19.1. I had at least 20 failed attempts and 30 reboots easy. First piece of advice is use a USB 3.0 installation USB device. Much, much faster than a standard USB key for repeated attempts. I have a factory configured ...

Re: Ethernet not connecting

It is not clear from the facts given if Linux Mint can connect to the ISP router, just not the Internet? It sounds like you have a direct cable to the ISP router from the Linux Mint box? Did you try bringing up the router admin interface? Most routers have a web administration interface for the rout...

Re: Best way to Backup and Restore Mint and Data

I use LVM, snapshot and rsync. I posted a suggestion to Linux Mint to include a check box on installation to use LVM with a 20% physical disk reserve. Snapshots make hot backups trivial. On my laptop I have two drives: 500GB and 1TB. I use rsync to backup the 500GB drive to the 1TB drive. I do not c...

Re: Observation on size of /boot

If one selects "encrypt drive" from the Linux Mint installer then the /boot partition is separate because it is unencrypted so as to run the decryption software.

The default size is 500MB and I keep having to remove old kernels due to a high frequency of kernel updates.

Re: downloading virtualbox

JFYI, I install from Oracle's web site because their updates of late have been significant. Also, if you install from Linux Mint then be sure to go into Preferences -> Updates and turn them off. Mint will update via the updates manager.

Re: Are the tutorial guides currently the only way to install Mint with LUKS

There is a check box to encrypt the drive. If you don't see it then perhaps you are trying to dual boot and have multiple partitions? I don't remember what the encrypt drive check box conditions are. I just remember encrypting my blank drive was simply a check box. Note, the tutorial was also about ...

DirectX 11 memory leak detected for Warcraft 7.2, Legion

Hi! Happy Sunday! I upgraded my Warcraft game to the latest 7.2 Legion patch today. The following things happened: 1. Graphics settings were reset to factory defaults. 2. DirectX 9 was replaced with DirectX 11 3. Warcraft memory usage went from 1.0GB to 2.4GB (max allowed under 32bit) 4. Warcraft cr...

Cinnamon nvidia-settings fails with can't import dbus

Hi! Happy Saturday! I'm current with the latest updates of Mint 18/Sarah. I seem to have an environmental issue with Cinnamon. When I run 'nvidia-settings' either from the applet or using the launcher then I get an error message when I attempt to switch GPU modes. http://imgur.com/a/7d9ES Traceback ...

Re: /boot space check

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to reply. Like most users I was unaware that the old kernels were lying around or that I was one the hook for purging them? As Linux Mint becomes more mainstream this is one thing I think would need to change is any assumption users are cleaning up old kernels. Linux M...

/boot space check

Hi! Happy Friday! 2017 seems to be the year for kernel updates. As a result /boot filled up for me as with others. Is it possible to add a disk space check on /boot before installing kernels?

Thanks!

LVM, 20% reserve suggestion

Happy Sunday! Suggestion: LVM, dm-crypt installation should include and option to leave a 10-20% free reserve as an option for snapshot backups. Details: I just downloaded the latest Mint Cinnamon edition. According to the release notes this is the first edition with the option to encrypt with LVM. ...
