Creating logical partitions (solved)

Works like a charm! Thanks.

The secret was in realizing that an old-fashioned partition was a necessity; once this was in place, the remainder followed easily.

Re: how to generate partition > 4

They are greyed out because the partitions are mounted. And cannot be un-mounted if you are using them. If you boot the live mint dvd, be sure to un-mount the partitions before starting/editing with Gparted. Sorry - my mounts were for sda and sdc - I was not attempting to use drive b except through...

how to generate partition > 4

Running a 17.3 system with four internal disk drives and wanted to assign partitions with Gparted but when I get to the "partition type" entry all of the selections for logical and extended are greyed out. The partition can be altered or aaded to, so long as I deal with primary partitions ...

Re: unacceptable slow startup

Thanks to everyone for some useful suggestions. To answer a few of the questions: I don't understand the "sda18" part. Is this an EFI partitioned drive with 18 (or more) partitions?{/quote} The main system drive is on sda and is numbered by Gparted as #18. There are about 20 entries for po...

unacceptable slow startup

On a cold start I find that it takes this system more than one hour to start up. A few details: When powered on, a Mint 17.3 with Mate system does its usual thing including beep, POST, GRUB, Mint logo but never proceeds to whatever should follow the logo (presumably the login). The system has a bunc...

strange behavior of partitions, mounts, and similar (SOLVED)

Has anyone else experienced this kind of behavior of Linux Mint 17.3: The situation: I had a conventional disk drive beginning to fail so I replaced it with a solid state disk. In the course of changing the drive, I wanted to make a temporary copy of the old disk onto a new SSD. I had previously sep...

Re: md5sum of bash

Yes, thank you. The md5sum matches what I am running so apparently the code file is good. Here is a snippet of what I am trying to do: I have one line that says (inside of a pass loop) pass=$pass % {10} ; and, although $pass take on values from 0 to 12 in the present incarnation, the value of $pass ...

md5sum of bash

I would like to hear from anyone who has a satifactory copy of besh on 17.1. I am getting bizarre behavior when trying to execute a simple script from the bash that comes with Linux mint 17.1. If you would post the md5sum of /bin/bash then that would be great. Thanks.

md5sum /bin/bash

Re: Hardware diagnostics wanted (solved)

Thanks to everyone who suggested things to look at. It seems that installing fglrx eliminated the artifacts from the text so I won't worry about that, at leas until some other related problem crops up.

Now, if I could figure out why bash doesn't like my input...

Re: Hardware diagnostics wanted

Thanks for the suggestion. I did not mention this fact earlier because I had planned to replace the noisy sdc drive, but I did look at smartctl when the drive was noisly. The report indicated good health although it had IMHO a large error count: SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 16 Ve...

Hardware diagnostics wanted (solved)

I am looking for help in troubleshooting a suspected hardware problem. In summary, here is what happened: My system became pysically noisy on drive sdc (which contains a single partition consisting of data) so I ordered a replacement disk drive. After trying unuccessfully to get the system to run wi...

Here is the entire file that I tried to use for 17.1: # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices # that works even if disks are added and removed. About /etc/fstab

I have been running Mint 17 for a while and recently decided to go to 17.1. A new problem occurred when I did this, to wit: /etc/fstab does not seem to be recognized. If i have no partition specified for /home then the system comes up showing mounts for sdc3 and sdc4 my two user partitions. But if I...

Mint logo brightness no longer fades in

Thanks for your reply. I had thought this to be the case, but now I have to figure out why X windows won't run for me with that combination.

Does a PCIe 16x version 3 card work in a version 2 motherboa

The title sums it up - does a late model PCIe card (v3.0) work on an Asus P6T SE motherboard even though the mobo provides version 2 slots? I realize that the data transfer rate will not be optimal, but I need to know if the combination is functional even though it may be slower. Thanks.

Re: installing mint-meta-cinnamon damaged this system

Thank you for the information. I now see that much is shared between Cinnamon and the somewhat altered version of MATE that I now have. There are a great many things which need to be done so that I can use the system the way that I am used to, and probably there are many more things that I do not ye...
