Re: Installing Mint to external HD dual boot question
In case the GRUB install fails and I can't boot anything, Mint or Windows, is there any recommended utility that I can have ready on a thumb drive to fix the problem? Yes, these things make me a bit nervous...

Re: Installing Mint to external HD dual boot question
I hope the installer will make it VERY CLEAR that it is only going to reformat the new Ext4 partition and not touch any of the others! Sometimes these things are unclear.

Re: Installing Mint to external HD dual boot question
I installed Mint 20.1 MATE to an external SSD, then set the BIOS of my old work computer to look first to USB, then HDD, then CD Drive for boot. (GRUB was installed to the SSD too.) If I wanted to run Mint, I'd plug in the SSD before booting. If I wanted to run Windows I'd leave the SSD unplugged. ...

Re: Installing Mint to external HD dual boot question
Is it possible to just boot Mint manually from within Windows? Seems like that might be less prone to difficulties. This is not recommended, but is an option. You can install LM in a virtual box created within windows. Probably wouldn't work well on my 9 year old system with 4 GB RAM, which can't b...

Re: Installing Mint to external HD dual boot question
Thanks Andy. Do I put Grub inside the new Mint partition on the external drive or somewhere else on the external drive? External drive is mainly used for data storage. I have D, E, F partitions and the Mint partition will be G. Regarding the choice to make a primary partition or extended and logical...

Installing Mint to external HD dual boot question
I want to install Mint 19.3 onto an external USB hard drive attached to my Windows 7 laptop. I have the live USB. I have reformatted my external hard drive in Windows Disk Management to make 60GB of unallocated space for Mint. I thought about making it into a partition (I only have 3 primary partiti...

Re: Can I use Mint on usb
VERY important to stress that the install process to a USB has to avoid puttng the GRUB boot loader onto the hard drive , which is where the installer wants to put it. Once GRUB has replaced the Windows Master Boot Loader on the hard drive, it is a major PITA to restore normal Windows booting. Than...

Re: Can I use Mint on usb
Thanks. So, if you are running Windows and don't have Mint installed on your hard drive, there is no way to create a LIVE usb stick with customized programs of your choice. You have to actually install Mint on a USB stick to do this. Am I understanding correctly? And the USB installation will be per...

Reinstalled 7, now no program icons on desktop --why not?
My previous install of Gloria (which was 64 bit--my new install is 32bit) automatically put icons to launch programs on the desktop after I installed the programs.. My new install of Gloria does not do this. I have googled this and know I'm supposed to use "create launcher" to do this but ...

Re: Permissions/Ownership all screwed up after new install
I just tried to edit the original title of this thread to add "--SOLVED" but couldn't do so because there weren't enough characters left in the permitted title length. Perhaps the length limits should be made a bit more flexible.

Re: Permissions/Ownership all screwed up after new install
Well, why wouldn't I want to own the partition? It's my computer, and i'm the only user. Thanks. I made that change and now own the xp partition. The thing is, before I made this change, I know fstab said group 46, but still I had no authority to change the files in that partition according to Permi...

Re: Permissions/Ownership all screwed up after new install
Oops. I just noticed that in these lines: /dev/sda8 /home/gumby/Data1 ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=100 0 2 /dev/sda9 /home/gumby/Data2 ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=100 0 2 uid=100 is wrong. It should be 1000. I am sure I entered 1000, so I don't know how it became 100...unless I made a typo. I'll try ...

Re: Permissions/Ownership all screwed up after new install
It's probably best for us to see exactly how your partitions are being mounted. Please post the output of the following: Open Terminal Type cat /etc/fstab Okay, here it is. Thanks for your help. gumby@gumby ~ $ cat /etc/fstab # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'vol_id --uuid' to ...

Re: Permissions/Ownership all screwed up after new install
I should point out that, although I can access the Windows partition, its Permissions seem a bit odd: "Owner: root Group: plugdev Others: None (Folder access greyed out for all three.) You are not the owner, so you cannot change these permissions." I suspect that, when I chose Manual Parti...

Permissions/Ownership all screwed up after new install
I reinstalled Gloria due to problems I was having. Reinstall went OK, did manual partition so I could keep my data and other partitions and install gloria into same partition it already occupied. Install seemed to go okay, but I couldn't set up the data partitions to boot automatically in home becau...

Re: Install Gloria into existing partitions only?
I reinstalled and it went okay, but I couldn't set up the data partitions to boot automatically in home because when I tried to enter a path I was getting error messages to enter a different path and didn't know what to do. So I decided I would mount the partitions after the install and used instruc...

Re: Which files to backup before reinstall?
When in your /home/username folder in nautilus, press Ctrl-H to show hidden files and folders. All ./folders are your settings and preferences, so you should at least back these up. There might be other files too, but not sure where they reside in the file system. atlef. Thanksk atlef. I wonder, th...
