Re: Linux Mint 19.1 - File Transfer Between Ext4 & NTFS Partitions

My experience writing/reading ntfs disks/partitions, and transferring files much the same as the other responders to the op. Never had a problem. That said, it is possible (DAMHIKT) to pull the plug on an external drive before the "write behind caching" has completed it's write, thus setting the so-...

Re: Linux Mint Appreciation Thread. Because it is the best OS on the planet!

I came to Mint at version 13 xfce, and soon forgot about windows. Even my technology challenged wife is happy running Mint 18.3 xfce. Thanks to all the developers who make this great os possible!

Re: Draftsight 2D CAD

I've been looking at alternatives myself. Been using Draftsight since the first version was released and it has been an up-and-down experience. DS is a pretty comprehensive and feature rich 2d program, although a couple of versions have been broken. Dassault-Systemes has also been a pain, and their ...

Re: Breaking: Update Manager in 19.2 will no longer feature a protective level system

My thoughts on this as a user whose daily driver has been Mint xfce since v.13. -Since my Windows days, and continuing today, I consider all updates a crapshoot and you are well-served to adopt a system to protect yourself against a bad one. -The level system is not what attracted me to Mint in the ...

Re: I love Linux!

To get the network id correct all that is required is to edit 2 files in /etc. /etc/hosts & /etc/hostname. Must be done with sudo, just be careful!

Re: systemd 237-3ubuntu10.15

In my opinion, this is no bug/design flaw. I will occasionally blacklist a specific kernel, but I still want the update manager to offer subsequent kernels--I will ultimately determine whether or not to install them. Don't worry, you'll have that as an actual feature in 19.2, you'll be able to choo...

Re: systemd 237-3ubuntu10.15

I also found that when the Update Manager lists components for updating, you can select one and right-click on it, which then gives you the option to ignore all updates for this component. I did that for the kernel. Is that the same as the "pinning" action? In principle, yes. But then you depend on...

Re: I wanna buy a second hand Thinkpad. Any snags I might wanna look out for?

Pjotr's advice is usually spot-on, but in this case I have to disagree. Like some others here, I will never buy a new laptop again. Used Thinkpads, and Latitudes represent the best of durability, are easy to work on, and have near-perfect Linux compatibility. I am running all Mint, on 5 thinkpads an...

Re: Computer starts on its own / autonomously

I have found sleep/standby to be totally unreliable on my thinkpads running mint 19 xfce. Same computers were 95% reliable using sleep on mint 18.3 xfce. On mint 17 xfce, I never had a problem with sleep on the same computers (even running the later 4.4 kernel series). Go figure!

Re: Basic CAD Drawing Program

I have had good luck with Draftsight. It's a natural for anyone with Autocad experience. There will be a rather arduous learning curve if you don't have autocad experience. Draftsight can be downloaded as a .deb and must be registered--free but not open-source. Most of the open-source cad software w...

Re: Pinta crashes in Mint 19 Cinnamon

I have no idea why, but my experience with Pinta in Mint 19 xfce has been pretty much like Karlchen. Straight clean install of 19 beta, converted to final release per instructions on the Mint blog. Pinta 1.6 installed from repo, default mono, hardware as in inxi below: :~$ inxi -Fxz System: Host: mn...

Re: Ideal Total Disk Backup?

Hi Bigs Don't know where you heard that Clonezilla is not very good, but I've been using it for about 5 years now, with stellar results. Is there a learning curve?--yes! But it's well worth the effort. You can use it to backup the entire disk to a file (image) or to another disk (must be same size o...

Re: DraftSight cad program

I've been using Draftsight since the first linux version came out. Printing has always been iffy, and alternately breaks and then works with version releases. Problem is, you have no choice but to upgrade versions because eventually, older versions won't run any longer. My solution (and a poor one a...

Re: mint 19 Cinnamon freezes running on Dell Latitude E6430 laptop with 860 EVO SSD

Ive experienced the same type of freeze on a latitude e6530 (i7,8gb, ssd). I tried the proprietary drivers but went back to the nouveau. I then disabled the nvidia card, and run off the intel 4000 graphics. The freeze happens on all three, so I figure it's something else. Since it will eventually un...

Re: Mint 19 Clonezilla failed

Clonezilla version 2.5.6-22 works 100% with Mint19. I experienced the same issues checking and resizing with 19. You must use a newer version of Clonezilla to check a Mint partition. The older versions (my "go-to" has been 2.3.1-18 for years now) will act like they are checking, and give no warning,...

Re: Complete system freeze

There have been many posts here telling people (noobs in particular) that shutting off with the powerbutton is a no-no. In the case of a total freeze: keyboard, mouse, touchpad etc all totally non-responsive, there really isn't a lot of choice. In a case like that, I have shut down with the powerbut...
