Re: Software manager (GUI) doesn't work??

In at least one version of Mint, Software Manager doesn't start for non-administrator users. If you include... o Version of Mint [Rebecca, Qiana, Maya, LMDE.....] o Desktop Environment [KDE, Cinnamon, Mate, XFCE.....] o The terminal command you tried that does work. o When the Software Manager does...

Re: intel graphics for new linux laptop

My Linux laptop is 3,5 years old. And has an Intel HD 3000 build into the CPU. Which is an i3 running at 2,1 GHz. It runs Mint 17.1 with Cinnamon flawlessly with the default Intel drivers. Hooked up my full hd screen to it through the HDMI connection and it worked right away. Just don't expect to do...

Re: Limitation of codecs version of Mint

Not entirely certain about this. But I believe part of the license cost for Windows covers the use for mp3 etc.

Re: Netbook sound is choppy when I connect to a sound syst.

Run foobar in Wine in linux? That's hilarious ... linux has audio players 100 times better than foobar. Including audacious and clementine. I use both. My experience is completely opposite. Programs like Banshee and Rhythmbox require truckloads of RAM to run. And especially Banshee I've discovered ...

Re: Netbook sound is choppy when I connect to a sound syst.

That's a good question. Intel hardware is generally very well supported in Linux. I have a 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05) according to lscpi in my little i3 laptop, and it runs flawlessly here. Same with the rest ...

Re: Netbook sound is choppy when I connect to a sound syst.

If you have Wine installed you could try Foobar2000. It's a Windows program but it runs great in Linux. And is quite easy on system resources. Another lightweight player is Audacious which you can find in the Mint repo's. :)

http://tweakers.net/ext/f/0tXwKTgqbfCs0qTFyWYCNwca/full.jpg So I've decided to hook up my laptop to my 27 inch full HD monitor, and it's happily running :) Watching some good old 80's stuff on the main screen and file manager and Foobar (through Wine) running on the laptop's screen. For the full sc...

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgarde

I for one will upgrade my Windows laptop to version 10 when it gets released. It came with Windows 7. And when Windows 8 was released 2 months after I bought the laptop, I was able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for 39 euro's. Since then the 8.1 upgrade was free, and now 10 will be free as well. My mai...

Re: Mint 17.1 and Adobe Flash in Firefox

This is kind of a complicated subject but I'll try to simplify it. Basically, the web browser plug-in architecture that has been ubiquitous until the past year or so (NPAPI) is ancient and subject to easy exploitation (I'm personally not sure if the threat for Linux users is serious but it most def...

The only Flash stuff that I'm using are Youtube movies and they run fine in Firefox with the flash plugin. No idea about the other Flash stuff though.

Re: Get rid of Firefox!

I suspect that cyclguy is lacking in the CPU/RAM department. Might be the case. Firefox (and other web browsers) are memory devourers when you have several tabs open. A few open pages and Firefox eats more memory then the rest of my programs + Linux itself combined. Edit: You weren't referring to t...

Re: MusicBrains: How to best fix broken tags?

No idea about fixing your music database. Sounds like an Herculean task to me. Back in Windows I used iTunes and later on MediaMonkey for tags management. Now I have most of it sorted. In Linux I'm using Audacious to play my music. It's lightweight, very fast and if you wish you can make it look lik...

Re: Get rid of Firefox!

I have been running Firefox for years on Linux Mint. Never had it crash or freeze. This is my experience with several computers which I have used over the years. My guess is your computer might be the culprit, not Firefox. Do you experience other programs freezing and crashing as well?

Re: Will Linux Mint work with Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge?

Both my laptops are Sandy Bridge CPU's (previous generation of Ivy Bridge). One is an i3, the other an 7. The i3 has integrated Intel graphics (HD 3000), the i7 a dedicated Radeon card (6650m). All the hardware build in in both laptops is fully supported. The i3 runs LMDE while the i7 runs Mint 17. ...

Re: Will Linux Mint break my PC?

Easiest way to install Linux next to Windows (as a dual boot) is to install Windows first. Since you have already installed Windows. All you need to do is to use Windows disk manager (can be found in control panel) to resize the Windows partition, to create unallocated space on your computers hard d...

Re: How much space does Linux Mint need? Is my suggestion ok

On my laptop which only has Mint on it I only have 2 partitions. Firstly I've created the swap partition. After that the ext4 partition for Mint itself and had the installer allocating the remaining space to it. I've never used seperate partitions for /home etc. I don't reinstall very often and I ha...
