Cinnamon crashing, upgrades not completing

Hello, I installed LMDE2 from ISO. Then I ran apt-get update apt-get upgrade There were many upgrades. I rebooted, then ran the update/upgrade sequence again. Now I get a message "Cinnamon crashed, would you like to restart"? and it falls back to a rescue version. That version doesn't have a termina...

Re: general guidance for backup / restore ?

I used Cloudberrry backup tool for the cloud, and Mint's internal backup tool for my USB hard drive backup and software list
sfdisk for the partition table.

general guidance for backup / restore ?

Hello, I'm trying to be smart by backing up my data to the cloud and to a local USB drive. I've backed up my home directory, music, and photos, my partition table and software package list. Now I need to test these backups. I don't have a spare machine lying around to test a restore with (i have an ...

Re: install Burg on LMDE?

I guess what i want is slightly different. Even if the external drive is connected, I'd still like all 4 boot options to come up (internal and external). Makes it easier for me to provide guidance on those times where my spouse has to boot the machine and I'm away. Maybe not a great reason, but ther...

Re: install Burg on LMDE?

thanks, glad I'm not crazy. I have a grub menu with two options at the moment - ubuntu and lmde -- and i'd like to add a third option to boot from an external drive, but i understand that is not possible with grub. I can boot the external drive directly, but not as an option with grub from the main ...

install Burg on LMDE?

hi,
I would like to use burg, but the directions I've found in these forums for installing it on lmde are out of date.

Because (as i understand it) LMDE does not use PPA, i need an alternate way to install burg.

thanks,
Mary

external drive spawns too many file managers

hi, my external USB drive has not been connected in a while. I used it to back up files. When i connect it, the system goes wild and starts opening dozens of copies of the file manager. It opens windows that browse to the drive, and also a bunch of "home" windows. The only way to stop it is to switc...

Re: analog sound device disappeared from settings

Darn. I installed pulseaudio control. It only shows the digital output port, just like Mint sound settings. I also ran the suggested commands to delete and re-set pulseaudio settings, logged out and in, still not fixed.

quick question. was I supposed to run pulseaudio -k as root?

analog sound device disappeared from settings

hello, I have an onboard sound device that installed with Mint 17.2 and worked for awhile. Mint's "Sound settings" always had two choices, digital and analog (I used analog). One day, the analog option disappeared, and now i have no sound (I can't use digital, long story). And yet: mary@mythbox:~$ a...

screen lock settings - can't find

hi, I installed Mint Mate edition 2 weeks ago on an old MacBook and it's working beautifully. However, I'm unable to find the setting to cancel the Screen Lock. Even Google is no help ... the articles say that i should have a setting in Control Center such as "Dim and lock" or something, but I have ...

Re: desktop sharing: is it really gone?

replying to my own thread here ... I went ahead and installed x11vnc instead. It's so much better than vino-server anyway. It doesn't crash, it's way faster and more responsive, and the connection stays alive, unlike vino that kept dying on me all the time. So it's probably good that mint is not shi...

desktop sharing: is it really gone?

hi, i recently upgraded from LMDE to LMDE2, and i am no longer able to see my desktop remotely as before. Other threads seem to indicate that desktop sharing is simply "gone" from LMDE2, but can that actually be true? i tried installing gnome-user-share as some people suggested, but that made no dif...

Re: upgrading to LMDE2: NVIDIA question

hi, I forged ahead and the upgrade completed fine via apt. Yay! One thing that is bugging me though: my app shortcuts/launchers on the top panel in Cinnamon are gone. I'm trying to replace them, by dragging the application icon from the menu to the bar, and dropping it in. This used to work. Why doe...
