Re: Installed not showing
Hi All Hope you guys don't get tired of answering newbie questions. 1.Installed FreeBasic and it installs into a folder with a name unbearably long. If I edit the folder name to something simple like FB, the path's to the compiler are lost. How do I edit / change that. 2. FreeBasic does not show up...

Re: Application Sound
Looks like pacmd should be able to if your using pulse audio. Not something I have done, but I have used it control overall volume... It has a ton more then I have used though and if you read through their help and man page you may be able to figure it out?

I have tried that but it is broken and gcc is still not working! Please help me. it is not going to work until you install the package mentioned in the link. What you do mean "tried that but it is broken"? Can you copy and paste the error message you get when trying to install build-essen...

Re: User Currently Used By Process
You can't change the user name ''weaselboy'' while logged in as ''weaselboy''. Make an extra administrator maybe... sudo adduser dilbert sudo adduser dilbert sudo ...then log out and back in as dilbert to change weaselboy. There's room for thousands of users. You could also simply not log in at boo...

Re: Which distro is best for IT/CS person
Errr... I don't know that gentoo has "gone downhill" the OS going strong... They just lost a large chunk of documentation a number of years ago... Sounds a bit wrong to say the whole thing has gone down hill.coder123 wrote: Ok thanks I didn't know gentoo had gone downhill.

Re: Which distro is best for IT/CS person
I thought about making this a poll but decided not to because I want to see you guys comment. Do you guys think mint is suffice for IT and CS people or are they more suited for more advanced distros like Arch Linux and gentoo? As a CS person myself I personally think mint is suffice unless your loo...

Re: Is This A Good Linux Computer?
You could likely run a functional desktop on that thing... I have a similar laptop with 512mb ram and Mint 13 w/mate ran on it... though it was slow. It ran Arch linux with mate and simple programs reasonably OK, but probably not to the standards of people used to new technology. That is a brutal ad...

Re: Different DEs
Hey guys, Thanks for the replies! I've been meaning to try out KDE and XFCE, so I'll give them a whirl next time I feel like tinkering. I've read a bit about (as I understand it) not having a DE and using a program like fluxbox instead. Does that sound right? Has anyone tried this out, or have any ...

:( That's not a solution. I am happy it works for you, and if that's good enough its good enough.... But is the option not present in your KDE config options? There really is a built in solution for this, apologies if you have already tried it... but its always best to figure out WHY things aren't w...

Re: Downloading and installing Touch Freeze in LM17.1
TouchFreeze is simple utility for Windows In general you will have a MUCH better time in linux if you STOP looking for ways to run your old windows utilities, and START thinking about the basic functionality you enjoy and look for the best way to provide it in linux. For example, instead of asking ...

Well, 95 % (or more) of the computers don't need nomodeset.... Don't forget that we see mainly the problem cases here, not the success stories. Well, maybe. I have a hard time believing 95% of the computers don't require it,maybe (?). Even just being presented with an option up front to s...

The monitor should figure out and display the image it is give... Often is this is untrue its a setting on the TV not the computer. Check your TVs scaling option to see what works best, sometimes Auto can't do it.

Brain out, not to argue that libreoffice has complete compatibility... but is it possible your experience is a bit dated at this point? I noticed you kept mentioning open office... Its been a good few years since that was in common use and libreoffice now vs open office back when it was the standard...

Re: LibreOffice calc formulas?
I just started using Linux and I love it, but I was curious about something. I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I'm living in a world full of Microsoft users. It's rare, but once in a while I may need to prepare spreadsheets that do calculations, and possibly share them. That being said, does libre...

I still have windows because...
Its not a competition. You don't get bonus points.
Its about using the best tool for the job. Most the time for me thats linux but sometimes things are built for windows, and they will work better if you use windows.
