Re: Need help to talk a friend thru installing HP Deskjet 3512 scanner

That printer requires HPLIP 3.12.9 or newer, and Mint 18.3 comes with HPLIP 3.16.3, so there should be no need to install HPLIP. Has your friend actually tried scanning? I think 18.3 comes with SimpleScan, but I prefer xsane, so I always install that.

Re: delete login password

Peter, the answer to your question can be found somewhere on the forums, or at least I believe it can. People ask now and then how to make their system password-less, and the usual answer is that it's not a good idea to do that. However, in one of the threads on this subject, somebody mentioned that...

Re: Virtual Box support Cannot access host partitions

I would think it would be possible to do what you want to do, but I have never heard of anyone doing it that way. The ordinary way is to have your VB virtual drives within your Home partition. If it is possible to do what you want, somebody here will almost certainly know. Welcome to the Linux Mint ...

Re: new to AMD and linux, need help! hardware drivers wont install!!

Many drivers are included in the Linux kernel, and much of the time you don't have to worry about installing drivers. If everything seems to be working properly, it's probably using the kernel drivers and nothing further is required. It is helpful to see the output of the inxi -Fxz command, that wil...

Re: Good fathers teach their sons DIY skills

I think everyone is better off as an adult if they have learned how to cook a meal, sew on a button, replace a plug or cord on an appliance and unclog a sink. “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance a...

Good parents teach their children DIY skills.
+1

I think I got a lot of my DIY skills from my father, but my mother was pretty sharp on many things, too, and I learned a lot from her.

Re: Has anyone played around with MX Linux?

I have tried MX and it works well. I've installed it on a few older computers for friends. Unlike Flemur, I like the name of the team leader, and I love the release names on antiX!

Re: Download YouTube videos

I am a big fan of youtube-dl. I know there are GUI applications that work well, but I save been using youtube-dl for so long that I really don't think about using anything else. And it is quite rare to find a site it won't download from. For some of my command line-phobic friends I have set them up ...

Re: What printer should I get?

I've been sticking with HP printers. HP has Linux drivers for nearly every printer they have ever made - literally thousands of them. My current printer is a DeskJet 2132. I have been buying aftermarket ink cartridges for it and never had any problems with them. I know people who use printers from S...

Having trouble setting up dual boot

I have a laptop belonging to a friend, which she asked me to clean of viruses and malware, and I offered to dual boot it with Linux as long as I had it. She said her son has been bugging her to start using Linux, and yes, please go ahead and install Linux on it. The laptop has Windows 10 on it. I th...
