Re: Upgrade from 18.1 to 18.3

OK, one or both of us is missing something. What do level 4 and 5 updates have to do with upgrades from Mint 18.1 to Mint 18.3? As I understand it, you can do the level 4 and 5 updates or not, as you choose. You can do the 18.1 to 18.3 upgrade or not, as you choose. Choosing, or not choosing, to do ...

Re: Dumb question - Deb 9 stretch files on Linux Mint ?

One, or possibly both, of us is confused. I am a long time ham (N7JA) and always interested in the unusual things that are done in ham radio. So, when I saw that you were doing one of those interesting ham radio things, I was interested. I went to the QRSSPiG site, and the QRSS Plus site, and a few ...

Re: Can't Shutdown or Restart

I have a computer that gives that "8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC" message, but it doesn't seem to affect the operation of the computer, so I have always ignored it. If you do decided to try a BIOS update, the Hirens BootCD includes a miniXP. I had to use that to update the BIOS on a computer w...

Re: Virtual Machines

I would also recommend VirtualBox. It is available in Software Manager or Synaptic, but many of us prefer to download the latest version from Oracle rather than use the version in the repos. Somebody recommended that when I first started using VirtualBox, and that's what I've done ever since, and ha...

Re: Upgrade from 18.1 to 18.3

According to my update manager there is a upgrade option in the EDIT menu bar to 18.3 Sylvia However I have some level 4 and 5 packages in the update manager.. Which options do I select..?? I don't think you need to select any of them. Just do the Upgrade. If any of those level 4 and 5 options are ...

Re: Is Linux Mint based on Ubuntu or Debian?

You're using 17.3, so you need to download packages for Ubuntu Trusty or 14.04. Why is that? Because Mint 17.x is based on Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty." If you try to install packages for say, Ubuntu 16, you run a risk of trashing your system. On your other system running Mint 18, you want Ubuntu 16.04/Xe...

Maybe a PAE problem? antiX 32 bit has a non-PAE kernel, I believe.

Or, if you don't have any of your own data on that computer, just do a new install.

This is the first time in a very long time that Mint has not been in first place, on Distrowatch.
Mint is still in first place in the last 12 months, the last 6 months, and the last 3 months. But Manjaro is first in the last 30 days and the last 7 days. Wonder why?

In case you tried the Sex Pistols link in the first post and found that it won't work in the U.S., this one works:

This is why my desktop has 4 harddrives in it  I can keep my current system and play with the newer versions.
I use VirtualBox for that. At one point I counted 36 different OSes I had installed in VirtualBox, but I've been cleaning some of them out lately.

1) I thought (as a newbie) that questions like this were to be asked by newbies, and would be answered--with authority--by the moderators Nobody has all the answers, not even the moderators! It'sa different icon depending upon which desktop environment you use, but I believe the icon is the same place on the panel for all of them.

I am now running Mint, but I can't find "GParted". Where is it?
Gparted is included on the "live" install disk, but not in a standard install. You will have to install it with Software Manager or Synaptic.

Re: File managers very slow in large folders

I have this problem also, and others have reported it. As I understand it, the issue is with creating thumbnails of all those files. I went looking for a solution some time back, and it seems like the answer was to disable the thumbnailer, or maybe to use a different thumbnailer. But I lost interest...

Re: What is Mint's current "official" recommendation about updates?

The official word is: "Upgrade for a reason", my opinion is at now: "Don't upgrade, except you have a reason" - Cosmo., July 28, 2016 Upgrade for a reason. If I look at my test installations I don't see the reason to upgrade, but I see many reasons to not upgrade. - Cosmo., September 19, 2016 There ...
