I'll see if I can put together a tutorial on removing metadata as I work through the available options. Thanks again.
I will be watching for that!

The debate about that has been raging for years with the LO devs.
I can't imagine why there's any debate on that. Quite clearly, it's a bug. Surely nobody would make it do that intentionally?

Re: Mate bug reports

There are a lot of pieces that make up MATE, but here would be a good place to start:

https://github.com/mate-desktop?page=1

Many of the individual projects have a link for bug reports at the bottom of their page. You might also find somewhere to report bugs here:

Re: Bad Windows but conquering the desktop war

Peer review is the key component in any software quality assurance process. The numbers I have seen suggest that at any given moment in time, there are approximately 300 people who have access to the Windows source code. Anybody with a computer and internet access has access to the Linux source cod...

Re: Typing French Characters

I didn't see a compose key. Oops. I left out a step. At the bottom of that window, click Options. You will then be able to choose which key you want to use as your Compose key. Once you have done that, you just press your chosen Compose key, then press two more keys that will generate the character...

Re: Typing French Characters

I use the Compose Key method on Mint Cinnamon 17.3; I would guess it's much the same on Mint 18.x. In the Menu, click Preferences, Keyboard, Layout, then choose your Compose key. I use the left Win key. To use it, you hit the Win key (or whatever Compose key you have chosen), then use key combinatio...

Re: Shutting down linux 17.3

Of course there is a way to shut down Linux Mint. But it depends upon which desktop environment you are using. Here's the shutdown button Mint 17.3 XFCE, as an example (button in the upper right corner of the menu):

Re: I can't see my Windows!

The best place to look for help with Linux Mint is right here on the Linux Mint forums. There are some good tutorial videos on Youtube, but as you found out, there are also a bunch of bad ones.

Problem number 3: remove all xenial repositories. For Mint 17.x, you want Trusty repositories.

Re: How to get RTL 8812AU working without internet?

I have used tethering from my Android phone to my laptop a few times. If I remember correctly, just plug a USB cable into the phone and into the computer. On the phone, go to Settings, More Networks, Tethering, and enable USB tethering. I assume non-Android phones have something similar. There is lo...

There is apparently a PPA for the daily build, version 4.0.0-rc1 here:

No guarantees on the daily builds.

Just curious, why did you run bleachbit? I haven't seen anything in what you wrote here that would suggest running bleachbit would be necessary.

Re: Upgradin in 2019

At the moment, you'd want to install Mint 18.3. But Mint 19 will be out soon, June-ish, I think, and that would probably be the best choice in 2019.
