Re: Solved: Blank (blinking cursor) on boot attempt.

Welcome to the Mint forums, Mike_Duffy! Where do you want the computer to boot from? If from the hard drive, then set that as first boot device (in the BIOS setup). If you want it to boot from a USB device, I'm not sure how to tell it which USB device to boot from.

Re: Not able to install Google Chrome

You haven't really given us much to go on. How did you try to install it? Did you get any error messages? If so, what were they? Chrome isn't in the Mint repos, so you will have to download it from their website download page. And if you've got a 32 bit processor, you're out of luck. Chrome doesn't ...

Re: Where to Download

Just pick one close to you. If it's slow, try another one. I used to start a download from 3 or 4 places and look at the download speeds and pick the fastest one and cancel the others, but I've done it enough times now that I know which mirrors are going to be fast for me. Or just pick one at random...

You probably don't need to do that, but if you do, I searched with Startpage for 'bash read from file' and got a lot of good returns. Some of them even I could understand!

Re: Why oh Why can't we make Linux better looking

Linux looks fine to me. But even more important, it works fine. I mostly care about functionality. I don't care what the boot screen or login screen looks like, nor really, what's on the desktop. I know there are others who do care about those things though, and I see people talking about themes, ic...

catweazel, you can't leave us! We will all miss you. You may have made a mistake or two, but you've corrected many more of my mistakes than you've ever made yourself. Also, you have something that many of us are missing: experience . A broad base of experience, and years of it. You can't get that ju...

Welcome aboard, bill_steamshovel! Keen to get something working on this laptop and get an idea of whether or not we can use Linux in the future. I'd bet money that you can. On most systems, it just works. You may have problems with a particular system, but the gurus here will most likely get you fix...

Re: How do I activate RabbitVCS in Nemo?

It looks to me like basically nothing has been done with RabbitVCS for four years. Dead project, I'd say. You might see if you can get the Nemo stuff from their github page going. Good luck.

Need file search with thesaurus built in

I have a large collection of quotes on my computer in a LibreOffice text document, and it often happens that I would like to find a particular quote, and I search for a word I think is in the quote, but I don't find it. Like I might be looking for a quote about doctors, but the actual word used in t...

Re: Mouse back button not registering. Fresh install Mint 19

A web search (using Startpage) for 'Corsair M65 linux' turns up a bunch of hits. There is at least one open source project to support that mouse. Having never owned a mouse with back and forward buttons, I probably can't help you any more than that. But my search leads me to believe that the answer ...

Re: I made a mistake with timeshift and i lose everything /home

Rules I live by: Files in a storage system are considered sacrificial. Backup makes recovery possible. Redundant backup makes recovery probable. Years ago, when they were just starting to use digital technology in music production, one of the magazines I subscribed to had an article in which the au...

Right click on Panel. Turn Panel edit mode On. Add Recent documents applet. Close Applets application. Right click on Panel. Turn Panel edit mode off. That do it? (Works for me in VirtualBox.)

Re: clamd

Upon looking on my system for clamd, I find that it is a virtual package, which you can't uninstall directly. I would use which clam* and/or apt show clam* in terminal to see what clam packages are installed, then go from there.

Re: I made a mistake with timeshift and i lose everything /home

I have used TestDisk/PhotoRec to recover from mistakes like that, and was able to get most of the stuff back. Generally, the file names will be changed from what they were previously, and you'll have to go through everything and figure out what it is and rename it. The first part of the former /home...

Not quite. You uninstall clamd. You can do that from Software Manager, or Synaptic, or from the command line. The system knows that it is there, and removing it by any means other than uninstalling it will likely upset the system.

Re: How to Reinstall Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia w/o losing data/files?

Did you make a separate /home partition when you did the original install? If so, you can do the new install to / and be sure to tell the installer to NOT format /home. If you did not make a separate partition for home (and I think most of us don't), then you will have to backup all your files and s...
