US Supr. Court Ruling on Cell Phone Privacy

Cell phones are an extension of the person. All law enforcement was doing was asking or location information from the provider and they got it without a warrant. Supreme Court ruled against that today. What I found even more interesting than ruling in favor of privacy (as if that isn't interesting?)...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

Short answer to the topic - When? When it was finally something that could be installed by a non-developer. When I first heard about it not long after it had officially acquired the name "Linux" I looked into it and decided it couldn't do what I needed. Next looked into it again and heard about Damn...

Re: Who no longer trusts or uses Facebook?

At least Facebook doesn't listen in .. or, does it? Maybe so on voice-enabled devices & via third-party apps? Yes, it was all three vectors of Facebook, Gmail and browser (I don't know which) showed relevant ads the couple says didn't occur before. Out of curiosity I looked to see any recent videos...

Re: Who no longer trusts or uses Facebook?

Yes, those people agreed to it but can you see how they didn't even know what they agreed to even if they read the agreement? Plus, the terms and conditions change all the time. Just because your FB privacy is set to maximum for now, that doesn't mean it will still be like that tomorrow. Hate to br...

all use pkexec now
Maybe I missed something in this thread but why can't pkexec be used in place of gksudo or gksu? Such as

Code: Select all

pkexec xed /path/to/file
Also, I thought "gksu" changes permissions the same way "sudo" does but "gksudo" doesn't?

Re: Who no longer trusts or uses Facebook?

refused to never use it or any "social internet/web services" such as twitter, my space etc... Yet people focus on just Facebook and laughably even went to Twitter to complain. All of them do the same thing Facebook is being criticized for. Add to the that list Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and ...

Re: Kodi 16.1

If memory serves me correct, an issue people were experiencing in removing Kryptonite (Kodi 17) was a need for adding two more commands before doing apt-get update due to components remaining installed and pulling from already downloaded kodi files. Do the purge or remove then sudo apt autoremove &&...

I think the OpenGL version is directly tied to your hardware. This means you would need a new graphics card.

I could be wrong.

Please no ... president Trump bashing (Hillary lost: for God's sake, live with it).. Political statements are explicitly against forum rules. For that reason, I would normally remove your comment about the outcome of the US elections. This time I'm letting it stand as an example of statements that ...

Re: Censorship on the forum

The last thing we need is a leftist reality distortion field imposed on this forum (nor a rightist one of course, but that doesn't appear to be the case here). Please no America bashing I have challenged that "reality distortion field" (I'm going to remember that phrasing) on both sides, here and e...

Moem made the very same point, only without prolixity. No. She said one was more important. <sigh> The point turns on the meaning of data as opposed to metadata. Since you didn't define the meaning of either, there is no point to be made or accepted. Moem is correct. A picture of a dog (data) witho...

Knee-jerks can be damaging to both your chin and your arguments. My point is... Moem made the very same point, only without prolixity. No. She said one was more important. I say the other is more important. If you are going to snip and disregard all that counters your point use that. If for no othe...

Facebook is used extensively in activist organizing.
On both (or all) sides. This particular issue just seems to indicate one side used it better this time. Next time it might not be that way.

Re: In light of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, I finally deleted my Facebook account. Here are my thoughts on the matt

The metadata is much deadlier than the data. It's the information about your surfing behaviour, gathered from all over the web, that counts. Not the pictures of your dog. Wow, do you really think pictures of your dog (I prefer cats but don't have either) is all the additional info in the 2 differen...

to my understanding if people would have adjusted their privacy settings in Facebook their information would not have been available. Personal responsibility applies here. Ooops lost track of my own thread  So I ended up getting secure boot squared away and I'm running debian sid and so far no regrets! I had LDME running decently well but I didn't like that its on such an old version of debian atm. Hopefully my "unstable" system will stay as stable as it is now ...

Re: In light of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, I finally deleted my Facebook account. Here are my thoughts on the matt

The same people that volunteer all their information to Facebook without batting an eye also volunteer all their information to Microsoft through Windows 10's builtin spyware. True. This is not a defense of Facebook, but to my understanding if people would have adjusted their privacy settings in Fa...
