Re: Updated to Mint 18 and now it won't boot

That's solved it, thanks. I am getting a message about running in software rendering mode on boot up. I guess with fglrx being phased out it'll take a bit of time for the drivers to be released?

Re: ATI proprietary driver and Linux Mint 18

I'm having a similar problem, I think. Output of inxi -G for me shows: Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Trinity [Radeon HD 7520G] Display Server: X.Org 1.18.3 drivers: codec, air (unloaded: versa, radeon) Resolution: 1366x768@76.00Hz GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.8, 1...

Re: Updated to Mint 18 and now it won't boot

That worked! It took a while, but it looks like it's completed the update as Linux Mint 18 cinnamon is now showing in my grub menu, and no errors were shown after a couple of run-throughs of those commands. I did need to go through with the -f option for the first run-through, which fixed most of th...

Re: Updated to Mint 18 and now it won't boot

Right, on first running with the -f option, it seemed to be making some progress, and began the upgrade process, but to check for errors I ran the commands again, keeping the -f option, and now it's not letting me remove libde265... See: mint / # apt-get -f remove libde265 Reading package lists... D...

Re: Updated to Mint 18 and now it won't boot

Right, apt-get --purge autoremove results in this: mint / # apt-get --purge autoremove Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these. The following packages have unmet dependencies: gstreamer1.0-pl...

Re: Updated to Mint 18 and now it won't boot

Ok, continuing from there, when trying the next commands I get these errors: mint / # dpkg --configure -a dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad:amd64: gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad:amd64 depends on libde265-0 (>= 0.8); however: Package libde265-0:amd64 is not install...

Trying your advice, it seems to go ok, till I try to install the linuxmint-keyring, where it spews out more dependancy related errors: mint / # apt update Hit:1 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial InRelease Hit:2 http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu xenial InRelease Hit:3 http://archive.ubuntu.co...

Re: Updated to Mint 18 and now it won't boot

Thanks for the help... I wouldn't have figured that out by myself... Here's the requested pastebin link: http://paste.linuxmint.com/view/6ad0 Laurent, when you say chrooting to Mint from Live, I'm new... but I've heard of the chroot command, and have only a vague and fuzzy idea of how it might help, but can you clarify what the steps might be to use it in this situat...

Updated to Mint 18 and now it won't boot

Hi, So yesterday I used the update via terminal options shown here: https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2316 It didn't go smoothly, I ended up with a few broken packages, but after looking in the synaptic package manager I found that trying to remove them would remove things that seemed im...

Re: The bar at the bottom of the screen sometimes disappears

I've also started getting this issue in the past couple of days. My panel is usually set to 'intelligently hide', but even when switching to 'always show', it just shows a section of my desktop in place of the cinnamon panel. The Ctrl+Alt+Esc solution worked for me, so thanks! But wondering what the...

Best Linux Edition to put on a dinosaur of a PC

My sister got a 'new' laptop for christmas. (See: Refurbished and windows 7 slapped on it) and its a Dell from about 5 or 6 years ago. I was wondering what the best Linux distro would be to put on it. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz processor, 2BG of DDR2 RAM, and 100GB of internal memory. It curr...

Re: Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon is running in Software Rendering

I think I've fixed it now... I followed the instructions on here to download and install the latest fglrx driver, rebooted, and I'm free of the Software Rendering notification.

Re: Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon is running in Software Rendering

Hey guys, seems the problem has come back. I've checked in the Driver manager, and flgrx is still selected, and it's saying 1 proprietary driver is in use, so it's slightly different problem now. I've tried rebooting, but it's still loading up in Software Rendering mode... :? EDIT: sudo apt-get upda...

Re: Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon is running in Software Rendering

That fixed it, booted up with no 'software rendering mode' message, checked in the driver manager and 'fglrx' is now selected.

Don't know why it did what it did, any ideas?

Thanks for the help guys!

Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon is running in Software Rendering Mode

Hi, I've noticed that a message comes up on boot saying Cinnamon is running in software rendering mode. I checked the driver manager, and it says the system is using a manually installed driver, and the only option I'm able to pick is to continue using said manually installed driver. But I didn't ma...
