Re: LM 17.1 + Thinkpad = Driver trouble

@richyrich: the last thing I needed was more confusion   . But thany you  @Neil Edmond: I was not aware of ThinkWiki, thank you. Its a pity that a big brand like thinkpad does not have official support for Linux. But on further thinking, which Linux is a bigger question. How differ...

Re: How to partition HDD for Stanadalone Linux Mint?

Thanks a lot for all your feedback. I decided to go with:
* One Root partition (100GB) -- that includes /home directory.
* One Swap partition (6GB)
* One Data partition (rest of disk space) -- for data files only; user config files remain on /home in root partition.

LM 17.1 + Thinkpad = Driver trouble

I am extremely annoyed at the fact that a brand like Thinkpad does not have proper driver for Linux. With fresh installed Windows, all I have to do is get the Ethernet driver and the thinkvantage software. Then, all the necessary driver will be installed and update automatically. I installed 17.1 MA...

Re: How to partition HDD for Stanadalone Linux Mint?

@Flemur, my windows world logic agrees with @nerdtron in regards to "/home" being disturbed during formatting and the possible program/user settings conflict/errors. But I am reminded by an advice I once read somewhere of the net that the sooner I agree that everything in the windows world is wrong,...

Personally I am not a fan of hibernate but when battery is running out, guess I am out of options. So its a nice store for a possible rainy day.

I have couple related questions: 1. Why does the SV not be stored permantly when I use the "export" command...

Problem with GRUB2 after removing win7 from dual boot

Following http://itsfoss.com/guide-install-linux-mint-16-dual-boot-windows/ 's guide i installed win7 & Mint 17. Then I decided to remove Win7. I just went to control panel>storage and deleted the partition of win7(c:) & system reserve(assuming its only for windows) then i ran "sudo update-grub". No...

Re: How to run an application downloaded as "tar.gz"?

The error message is "bash: ./AnypointStudio: Permission denied". I am unable to set permission on the folder. Probably you have to set the permission correctly for that file. Rightclick on that file and go to the permission tab . At teh bootom you see a line about making the file executable, check...

Re: How to run an application downloaded as "tar.gz"?

@nomko None of the solution worked. But I missed out tell and important factor which I suspect is the cause of all the issue. The file was downloaded to a drive which is formated in NTFS as my machine dual boots. I have c: for windows, D: for data & e: for linux (ext4). Is my problems due to the fa...

@qbektrix : Why do you even want to run your filemanager as root anyway??? @nomko : As you have seen in my other thread http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=176149 where I am trying to run a file I downloaded as "tar.gz". How to run an application downloaded as "tar.gz"?

I am Linux & Mint newbie coming from Windows world. I usually run standalone applications(that dont need installation) from a folder in the "D:" called apps. Eclipse is one such app along with sublime text. The benefit is if I have to format my computer, I dont have to reinstall the app plus easy to...
