Re: What you'll do when Firefox drops support for XUL addons?

bother, I upgraded firefox and 57 broke every single addon I use, and the new greasemonkey broke every script I used. Sadly after many years of supporting netscape/mozilla I'm looking for alternatives. This thread has been very helpful. I installed waterfox using the instructions from https://www.re...

[solved] Clipgrab in mint 18?

Has anyone managed to get clipgrab working in mint 18? The 3.6.1 that I had previously downloaded from https://clipgrab.org/ worked in 17.3 but not in 18. I got an error saying no avconv or ffmpeg I tried version Version: 3.6.1-1~getdeb1 from http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/clipgrab but no luck with th...

Re: [solved] ASRock skylake flooding syslog with gpe6F

I thanked ASRock and mentioned that the BIOS wasn't listed on their support page. They replied that they only provide official support for windows 7-8-10. The L prefix indicates that it is an Linux version for inhouse use and will not be put on their website. So if you want it you'll have to contact...

Re: [solved] ASRock skylake flooding syslog with gpe6F

ASRock_TSD emailed me bios L1.71 which solves this problem.
at the moment it is not listed at http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H110M-DG ... ad&os=BIOS
Hopefully it will be up there soon, or you could probably ask for it from Asrock_TSD@asrock.com.tw

Re: ASRock skylake flooding syslog with gpe6F

As I suspected, the ASRock skylake gpe6F bug is also present in Linux Mint 18 beta Cinnamon. I just booted my system with a thumb drive and /var/log/syslog and var/log/kern.log grew until they filled my thumbdrive.

[solved] ASRock skylake flooding syslog with gpe6F

I finally updated my ancient system with a Pentium G4400 and 8g ram on an ASRock H110M-DGS. I pondered waiting until mint 18 came out but I booted it barebones with a 17.3 usb thumbdrive and everything looked great so I decided to go ahead and transfer all the accessories over to the new system. All...

Re: How to autorun ABCDE?

mc4man answered my query at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2257705&p=13470161#post13470161 . I've tried his solution and it works perfectly for me under 17.3 cinnamon. See his posting for more details, but this is a brief and minty version. Open a terminal and enter the following to create...

Re: website abandoned?

this monthly news seems to have come out a bit later than previous editions? Do you have a rough target date for monthly news?

Edit by Clem: Ideally, in the middle of the relevant month… so this one is very late indeed :)

Re: website abandoned?

I think the idea the OP is trying to get across is more visual activity on the blog/homepage would be positive from a promotional perspective. Thank you. Yes, that was my idea but I tried to do so in a humourous way, forgetting that humour is so easily misunderstood in the written word. I'm really ...

Re: website abandoned?

Yeah, the website is abandoned and Linux Mint is dead. No, its alive and well as far as I am concerned. Updates are certainly still coming through. But the topic is promotion, and I'm saying put yourself in the shoes of a first time visitor to the website. They see bad news and then silence for a m...

[solved]website abandoned?

A visitor to the linux mint website on April 6 2016 will notice that there is no monthly news posted for March, and no blog entries since March 8. What conclusion should they draw from this? Has the website and blog been abandoned? Have the owners been locked out by their own security?

The auxiliary wifi antennae doubles your signal strength but recently your signal strength was halved, and nobody else has reported a problem. Can you borrow another auxiliary wifi antennae off someone to see if the first one is faulty?

the funny thing is dell[*] do sell computers with ubuntu. see http://pilot.search.dell.com/ubuntu . Its quite well hidden though, and I only found it by accident. I was intrigued by by ivan-the-idiot's comment about Dell's small business line so I went to the dell website. The first form only listed...

Re: Does Mint getting hacked change security thoughts?

Why would we change the OS, for a security hole in a website? What you are saying is totally correct on one level; The OS has nothing to do with a website. But on another level I don't agree: It wasn't "a website" that was hacked, it was the 'mint website' that was hacked. Why would somebody do suc...

Re: Does Mint getting hacked change security thoughts?

The installation was for friends and their Windows 7 box was not password protected. It is now. My suspicions were raised as they, living in New Zealand, have 50Gb/month limit. We had to extend that and I was surprised at how quickly the data allowance was being used. We kiwis have always been expl...

Re: Does Mint getting hacked change security thoughts?

Security at the distribution level is only a partial solution. Agreed. But just because we can't do anything about the kernel doesn't seem to me a good reason not to harden things at the distro level. If you were giving advice to a newbie about securing their distro what would you include? GUFW? Fi...
