Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 21.2
Upgrades for spices/applets come through Update Manager. If you have been running updates as they come through and did not blacklist any updates, then I would expect you have the latest versions available. Thank you, good to know. :D After looking around more, I found that it was starting in Cinnam...

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 21.2
Step 2 of the instructions says: "If you installed Cinnamon spices (applets, desklets, extensions, themes), upgrade them from the System Settings." But I can't find anything in System Settings about how to upgrade them. I looked under Applets and I can see the ones I have installed/activat...

Thanks. I may experiment with ESC or other keys now that the machine is shutting down properly again.

Re: Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.0-53.109?
Same issue here, Ryzen 5 with onboard graphics, rolling back to 51 solved it. The only problem I had was that holding Shift while booting didn't get me to the grub menu (tried left shift, then right shift). I had to edit grub to comment out the timeout=hidden line and changed timeout from 0 to 5 so ...

Re: Emacs broken in Mint 19
I don't know how to help with your problem, but to answer your question, yes I'm running emacs on Mint 19.1 (Are you running 19.0 or 19.1?), installed from the repo, version 25.2.2. It works fine with no errors.

Re: Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.
In short, normal boot times were restored to kernel 4.15 (but not 4.15.0-24) by adding "video=SVIDEO-1:d" to /etc/default/grub line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINE_LINUX_DEFAULT It now reads; GRUB_CMDLINE_LINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d" BLESS YOU , kind gort2000! :D :D :D I...

Re: Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.
I must admit, I've surrendered and gone back to LinuxMint 18.2 which still has the 30 second delay before Plymouth starts but at least gets its binary bits into gear after that. The six + minutes of Mint 19 is far too long and for me, playing with kernels makes no difference. Fortunately, I only in...

Re: Can I change Cinnamon for MATE, or another.
I read (about a year ago?) that gedit is no longer being maintained. I don't know if someone has stepped up to maintain it since then. I don't think changing your DE from Cinnamon to MATE is going to change anything since you would still be running the same version of gedit. Meanwhile, the default t...

Re: Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.
I removed kernel 4.15.0-24 and went to 4.15.0-20 but my boot time is still just as slow (over 3 minutes to get to the login screen). I tried the "cleanup" commands posted elsewhere but just got an error that whatever grep was looking for didn't exist. I think there is something else going ...

Re: Parking Lots Why is it?
This is a natural phenomenon. Cities are supersaturated with cars, so anywhere a car is parked, it acts as a "seed" and a "crystal" of cars immediately begins to form around it.

Re: Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.
Here is another older laptop with the same problem if anyone wants to compare the specs. I installed Mint 19 (XFCE) and got the slow boot times on the initial install. Then I did updates including kernel to -24 and still have the same problem. gjd@Pang:~$ systemd-analyze Startup finished in 1min 9.7...

This blog post regarding running the Windows version of Firefox under Wine might help. It's about doing it to view DRM Flash, but could also solve the Silverlight problem.

Re: Luckybackup super-user not available after install via Software Manager
I would NOT include your personal data files in your Timeshift backup. If you do, then if you do a restore you would lose all changes to your data files that you had made since that backup. That's why it is intended just for your system files. I don't know if it's possible to set up separate Timeshi...

Re: Swap partition vs swap file?
Are we sure this is a change? I've always had to make a /home partition by hand (Mint 17 and 18). I would very much like to see an option for automated creation of a separate /home partition... doesn't even have to be default or recommended, just available. I think I just misunderstood. I th...

Re: Swap partition vs swap file?
I did try "Something Else" with the M19 Beta... there no provision for even a /home partition ... I Did It but the contortions I needed to go thru were unreasonable. Maybe the older versions have a better installer. That's bizarre, considering how many people use a separate partition for ...

Swap partition vs swap file?
I am still on Mint 17.2, planning to do a fresh install of 19 when it comes out. I read that instead of the usual swap partition, Mint now uses a swap file by default. Apparently this started sometime in version 18(?), but I haven't been able to find very much info on the implications. I already hav...
