I am under Mint 17 and was surprised skype 4.2 can't connect also. After reading this thread I updated skype to ver. 4.3 thru update manager.
It now works again. Haven't tried doing calls yet, but the chat portion works fine.

I use the tomighty timer. Just download the Java archive and run it with openjdk and your set.
It will not have any sound though just a timer. If you want sound to work.
