Re: You tube videos go dark - sound still there

It sounds like it's going into energy saving mode. I use KDE, so these instructions are specific to the KDE Desktop; however I'm sure there are similar settings in all the distros. If you open System Settings and look in Power Management, if you choose the "Energy Saving" section, you'll find "Scree...

Re: Can't access SYSTEM SETTINGS!

I'll try to get in there somehow... I rebooted the system, and now when I enter my password, it says "Failed to load session cinnamon", which is really odd, since I was using KDE. All I have access to now on that machine is the terminal.

Can't access SYSTEM SETTINGS!

Hi. I'm using KDE/Mint 17.1. My Samba was acting up, so I tried to uninstall/reinstall. In doing so I used Syanaptic, and I obviously removed more than I added back. My Samba i now working beautifully, but my file manager (Dolphin) looks different, and I can not open System Settings from the menu. W...

Re: Shellshock bug in BASH . . . [Solved]

The update has been in all appearances pushed out: I updated my system earlier today before even hearing about the bug, and I'm already on the updated package. How to tell for sure? Open a terminal and type: apt show bash This will make apt show you the information it can on the bash package, inclu...

Re: Shellshock bug in BASH . . . [Solved]

Does that mean the update has already been pushed out through the Update Manager, or do I need to do this: http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-2362-1/ ?

Re: Networking question

Postby DrHu on Sat Aug 23, 2014 3:38 pm This is a wee bit off the subject matter. DrHu--others, I am awed and respectful of the expertise offered in these forums--no doubt. These sometimes get waaaay beyond the ozone layer. In so many posts there are links to online articles to convey pertinent inf...

Re: Hopefully a simple sharing question

I'm running Mint17KDE on both a laptop and a desktop. They are on the same network. I can't seem to figure out how to get the machines to see each other. The laptop has a directory that I set up as shared (with Samba). Windows is not involved Linux ( and OSX ) can do something with Samba that Windo...

Re: Networking question

Does that imply that for a peer-to-peer I need to figure out samba? Samba is a client - server protocol. When you create the samba share in dolphin that machine just became a samba server. When the other machine accesses that share it becomes a samba client. Both machines can be both a server and a...

Re: Networking question

Maybe this one won't be too hard: Do I need to use Samba to share directories on a network between two computers running Linux Mint 17 KDE edition? You can use nfs-common and nfs-kernel-server as an alternative. Thank you! I would assume from the package names that that would be the client-server s...

[SOLVED] Hopefully a simple sharing question

The laptop has a directory that I set up as shared (with Samba). Windows is not involved, but the "Allow guests" stayed grayed out until I enabled...

Re: Hot corners not working on LinuxMint 17 KDE virtual mach

I had similar problems using both Mint 16 and 17 with KDE on Virtual Box, and the Virtualbox Add-ons were installed, of course. I was running it on Windows7Pro. The problem seems to be that it can't/doesn't use OpenGL quite right in the virtual machines, and you lose some of the "goodies" in KDE. Yo...

Re: Mouse cursor getting stuck on wrong cursor

I use the KDE desktop, but I have seen a few oddities with my cursors, too. Sometimes the "main" or default cursor falls back to the flat white arrow. I have had animated cursors get stuck, too; for example the "wait" cursor will not switch to the default cursor, but the other cursors like "resize" ...

Re: nVidia GEForce G210M

No joy, it didn't work. <shrug> c'est la vie, eh? But thanks for trying, I appreciate that... I'm sure if I knew what files to adjust I could have fixed it. I knew about the alternate terminals, but I hadn't thought of logging in like that. But I decided not to waste anymore time - I'll just wipe it...

Re: nVidia GEForce G210M

Well, I am able to boot into recovery mode, and I have tried switching a few drivers- no good. I've tried a few various commands for recovery I found in other forums - no good. I don't know enough about the X11 system yet to make any good guesses at what I should try next- switching drivers didn't w...

nVidia GEForce G210M

Hi - I've installed Mint 17 KDE on an ASUS laptop with a nVidia GEForce G210M w/ 512Mb. Everything was perfect, when I decided to change the resolution to 1024x768. I change the resolution, hit the apply button, and my screen went to a solid black bar in the middle, with a gray bar on the left and r...

Re: How do I restore the original font settings?

Did you change the anti-aliasing settings? Are the fonts a problem in all applications or for example only in Firefox? No, I didn't change them initially, BUT changing the anti-aliasing setting mostly fixed it. I didn't change it because it was set to "System Settings", which must have been "ON" by...

Re: How do I restore the original font settings?

Thank you, Xenopeek, I already tried that. I probably should have mentioned that. I have a near-virgin install on a laptop I was able to check for reference, and also tried looking at the Live CD and copying that. I'm a newbie at Linux, but I'm not a neophyte. I've hand-wrapped pins on a Z80 and ran...
