Re: Desktop Freeze and Locks Up

Well I finally got the kernel installed and it did last a bit longer, but finally locked up again. That's it for tonight... I'm out of ideas and energy!

Re: Desktop Freeze and Locks Up

I really do appreciate your help, but quite honestly I don't have a $1200 laptop sitting in front of me to run things in basic mode. I've been using LM exclusively for years, 2 years just on this laptop and have never had to dial my system down in order to use it. I can't install the 5 kernel or any...

Re: Desktop Freeze and Locks Up

Edit: I can't install anything from update manager, it keeps going unresponsive and I have to force quit update manager. :(

Just curious, when turning off visual effects, would I then be leaving then off from here on?

Re: Desktop Freeze and Locks Up

Thanks Larry. In my frustration and it being so late last night I forgot this important step. Something I noticed is my nice, new Western Digital Black HDD is actually a Hitachi HGST. Looks like I need a word with Amazon... The inxi would not work when booted from USB, I had to log into my in...

Desktop Freeze and Locks Up

Well I was very excited after 2 years to finally give my Windows partition the boot and when I had to replace my drive I did just that with a fresh install of LM 19. But now I have trouble. After the fresh install, I had a black screen until I finally got the Nvidia driver selected. Since then, my s...

Re: Steps to take after HDD failure

Nope, not a refurb just a well used drive in it's third computer. :D

Totally agree, gm10, drives are too inexpensive to gamble with data. My new Western Digital Black, 1TB 7200rpm just arrived and now comes the wipe. When I return, I'll have that Win10 partition gone too!

Re: Steps to take after HDD failure

If it's still only that one sector you do not necessarily need to throw it out yet, even if it ends up getting remapped (but as before, keep an eye on it). But if this test turns up more bad sector then yes, out with it. That took a bit of time, but just towards the end errors began appearing. The ...

Re: Steps to take after HDD failure

Thanks for the help everyone, some things to think about. I was certain this drive was on it's way out, it's the 3rd laptop I've had it in after all. Is that the drive that already had one bad sector when we previously talked? You didn't scroll down the SMART status in your screenshot to sho...

Steps to take after HDD failure

It appears that I have a HDD failing on me (attached image) which was suspect because of some random yet persistent boot issues, particularly after kernel updates (like this: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=298632). What I have is 2 drives: an SSD that has Win10 and LM installed on...

Re: [SOLVED] ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

Ok gm10, I have replaced the -55 kernel and even upgraded to 19.2. Have rebooted a number of times, powered off overnight and all without any boot errors. I think all is well...until that HDD decides to go.

Thank you once again for your patience and for your help!

Re: [SOLVED] ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

Regarding the kernel, I would suggest removing the -55 kernel and then reinstalling it and trying to boot to it once more. It's possible it somehow got corrupted during installation (maybe it hit that one bad sector on your drive?) and that it would work perfectly fine. It's a good possibility beca...

Re: [SOLVED] ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

This is interesting. i booted using the 4.15.0-54 kernel and it was fine. I fully powered off for a good hour and didn't change the kernel on next boot and it booted without error back into 4.15.0-55.

I could venture into a Mint 19.2 upgrade and see what happens next.

Re: [SOLVED] ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

Ugh. That just makes booting and rebooting the hard part because I have to go in and run fsck each time to get a successful boot.

Here's the screen for the SMART information:

Re: [SOLVED] ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

Quite probable, I can go days without rebooting. Also, I ran the Disk tests. I have 2 drives, one is an SSD and the other an HDD. I have dual boot with Win10 (which I haven't used in ages) and have split the TB drive as storage. Here are the screens from that. The HDD shows one bad sector no matter ...

Re: [SOLVED] ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

The last thing I remember doing before all of this started was I ran some updates, forgot which by now but do recall it was something to do with kernel, though it wasn't a kernel change, and some Nvidia updates ran. Immediately after those, everything went South on reboot. Ah, if you can get me a s...

Re: [SOLVED] ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

Makes sure it's not your drive gone bad, check Mint menu > Disks, select the drive on the left and then press Ctrl + S and see if there's a problem (Assessment columns). I will try this today, have a few hours of travel and then I can get on it. Otherwise file system corruption can be a kernel issu...

Re: [SOLVED] ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

Bad news, gm10!

The fix worked only until I rebooted again. Does that make it seem like I need to wipe everything out and start over? That would stink, been running trouble free for about a year but it happens I suppose.

Re: ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

Can't read your small screenshots but if it's sda4 and the recovery fsck didn't repair errors then this should do it: fsck /dev/sda4 -y From the recovery options you can select "root" to get a shell to run it. After the repair is done, and if your timeshift snapshots are on a different device, then...

Re: ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

Absolutely correct, it only showed the errors. :D I went back into the logs and found a few sections of red error text. It looks like sda4 is the problem area. I can't get into the grub menu and select advanced options for kernel selection, but I'm not sure how to go about finding a terminal and fix...

Re: ACPI Error at boot, can't start Linux

Thank you gm10. I am looking at a screen with a blue background named "recovery menu (filesystem state: read only)." I see options like resume, clean, grub, etc, of which "fsck - check all file systems" is an option. From here, should I use that, or try to get back to the logs and check the errors t...
