Re: Update Manager doesn't seem to be working

austin.texas said "In Mint 17 there have been a lot of updates in the last couple of weeks. Are you still not seeing them in the Update Manager?" Well, I am now. I don't know what I have done but somehow I have cleared the blockage. Along with the Update Manager problem I could not get Software Mana...

Re: Software Manager won't open

Thank you xenopeak. Before I get on to mintinstall, I notice that there were earlier postings (2011) on this issue in Newbe questions which suggested running update and install from the terminal. So I tried these steps, but no luck, or maybe ... read on. And as it happens, I had tried mintinstall a ...

(SOLVED) Software Manager won't open

When I attemp to open Software Manager I get the "enter password" box, but when I enter the password nothing happens: the box disappears but the Software Manager does not appear. If I enter an incorrect password the system tells me that it is incorrect, so it would appear that the password is correc...

(SOLVED) Update Manager doesn't seem to be working

I hadn't checked the Update Manager for a while (weeks, probably), but I noticed a couple of days ago that the icon was indicating that there are no updates. But there are always updates, particularly since I don't always install them. Is this related to the repository issues discussed over the past...

Re: XFCE and Mint XFCE

Good question. I raised my question because of a question on another forum, nothing to do with Mint, and I noticed that gthe questionner was using XFCE on Fedora. The answer to his question is reasonably straight forward in Mint XFCE, so I wondered whether the answer would be relevant to XFCE on Fed...

Re: What's this about bash?

Yes, I had checked the update manager and saw an item for bash so I ran it but I was not sure whether that was the fix. So that's all good then.

What's this about bash?

There are reports today that there is a security hole in bash, and that the sky will soon fall in. Does this affect us on Mint?

Editor and/or IDE for Python - Recommendations

This question was asked a few years back but I am wondering what are people's preferences today. I am looking at getting up to speed in Python, coming off a very low base. I am using Mint 17 XFCE. The Software installer has a number of options - e.g. spe (Stani's Python Editor), Drpython, Eric to na...

Re: Updating Software - Gramps in this case

Well, nothing ventured nothing gained.

I've followed the approach you suggested and upgraded the program. As you say, it wasn't complicated, and the upgrade to Gramps has fixed the bug I was concerned with, so looking good! At this stage anyway.

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

Re: Updating Software - Gramps in this case

Do you mean that Backports, that is, software distributed as backports, can reduce the stablity of the application being upgraded? I accept that upgrades that are not part of the regular major cycle of upgrades may result in less reliable, more unstable applications, but I wouldn't have thought that...

(SOLVED) Updating Software - Gramps in this case

I am currently running Gramps 4.0.3. on Mint 17 XFCE. Gramps has released an upgrade (4.0.4 May 22, 2014) which addresses, inter alia, a bug that has been, well, bugging me. Ubuntu has a package(s?) at http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty-backports/gramps, specifically Package: gramps (4.0.4+dfsg-1~ubu...

Re: Running programs from desktop

Spearmint2 True. There are other reasons for having links on the desktop. I guess I was thinking that when you tell an executable in the menu to put a link on the desktop it would be reasonable for the desktop link to be an executable. But, maybe not ... maybe requiring this decision to be made on t...

Re: Puzzled with paste

Hi Spearmint2

I had thought of doing that, but I want to be able to insert the image into the text flow, rather than have it as an attachment.
