Re: Github Attack Attempt

any comments on password managers :?: I use Enpass. They have a lot of the same features of lastpass, (password generator, local encryption/decryption only, easy syncing between devices) but they are free to sync among as many desktops as you want, and when you pay for mobile access (in my case, an...

Re: Best Practices for User Previously Used to Macs

This isn't the most mint-centric response, but if similarity to OSX is really important to him, elementaryOS is supposed to have a desktop that is very similar to the Mac environment that your friend might be used to. I haven't used it myself, so this is just 2nd hand knowledge. Take it for what it ...

Re: How to change desktop environment

At one time I installed cinnamon and the installed xfce along side it. those two seemed to play nicely together.

I have tried different DEs at the same time on other distros and have run into strange behavior, so it doesn't always result in a great experience with the 2nd DE.

Re: Why do some characters appear as a rectangle with numbers and letters inside?

Are you trying to view text in a language other than your systems default language? For me, I installed using English as my default language, and it installed the English UTF-8 characterset. This includes the English letter A, as well as the versions of the letter that are used in the other latin-ba...

Re: How do you add Workspaces?

You didn't indicate if you are running the Mate or Cinnamon desktop.

On Mate, you just need to right click on the panel and select "Add to Panel". A list of available apps should appear. Then you can just select "Workspace Switcher" and click the "Add" Button.

Re: Linux Mint Mate panel and text color

OK, so here is what I figured out... I changed the background color on the panel to black and used the link I provided earlier to make the text in the panel white. As you mentioned, the network, battery and sound icons were still black, and therefore were not easy to see or use. I then found info on...

Re: Linux Mint Mate panel and text color

I didn't mess with the BG colors when I tested this. maybe I'll give it a try tonight and see what I can figure out. it seems like the sort of thing that should be possible.

nw53 wrote: How do I restart Mate without rebooting?
You shouldn't need to restart the whole desktop, just the panels. You do that by entering this in the terminal:

Code: Select all

killall mate-panel
This will shut down your mate panel and reload it will your updated settings.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work on a live CD.

Which desktop are you using? I'm using Mate and I see it under the Administration section of the main menu. But, if you give more info people should be able to help you get your update notification back on teh task bar.

Re: tell script to send success or failure email

You could write a 2nd script that calls the first and handles the emailing based on the first script's return value. #!/bin/bash your_first_script_goes_here if [ $? -eq 0 ] then echo "Successfully ran script" | mail -s "script status" USERNAME@SOMEDOMAIN.COM else echo "Could not run script" | mail -...

Re: What went wrong with this very short shell script?

If you look at what basename actually does: basename --help Usage: basename NAME [SUFFIX] or: basename OPTION... NAME... Print NAME with any leading directory components removed. If specified, also remove a trailing SUFFIX. So, the command without any extra parameters simply removes the path prior t...

Hi nw53, I saw this post and realized that I had just answered the same question recently on another post. I went and found it so I could copy the answer, and I realized that it was your post last week as well. Did you try the suggestion I gave in your original post? I see that you've had quite a fe...

Re: Delete files in several (sub)directories

If you have all the files listed in a text file, you should be able to do it from the command line. Here is a quick test I did to confirm: Here are the files to be deleted: [corey@localhost ~]$ ls -l ~/delete-test/sub-dir1/* -rw-rw-r-- 1 corey corey 0 Mar 22 10:29 /home/corey/delete-test/sub-dir1/te...
