Re: Slow download speed of Firefox browser updates

I run mint 20.1 with mate desktop and a 30M bit per sec internet connection. I have found firefox very slow to download updates for the last month or so. Today I updated firefox to version 97.0.2 Very slow download at about 60k byte per sec. It took ages. Download file size is 60MB. I don't know why...

Re: Move to Bin

Thanks for the reply. I read the instructions in the links, installed poedit and examined the .po file today. There were a lot of references to "Bin" and Trash in the file plus several warning icons. I decided not to risk changing anything. I had to use command line login yesterday to reco...

Move to Bin

I have recently installed Mint 20.1 mate version to replace Mint 18.1 mate which "expired" in April and have been using for a few years. Is there any easy way of changing the name of the option "Move to Bin", in the menu which appears when right clicking a file, back to "Mov...

xed text editor and large files

Is there some limit on the size of text files that can be opened with xed in Mint 18.1 (64bit and mate desktop)? I have a large .pgn file (text file of chess games) 29MB, that I needed to edit. xed freezes trying to load it. It loads smaller .pgn files ok. I have 4GB of RAM so there should be no pro...

Re: dmesg output

I'd consider it an info or warning then. 46875 Hz is the sampling frequency used for audio on PAL (European) video signals. I'm unclear as to why 33024 Hz would be used instead as the sampling frequency. Or why a sampling frequency for PAL would be desired? :-) Google says that 33 KHz sampling freq...

Re: dmesg output

I did a search for "current rate 33024 is different from the runtime rate 46875" and found results that indicate this is about your kernel audio driver and/or your audio device. Others that had this message didn't have working sound. Do you have any problems with sound? I use USB digital ...

dmesg output

I have a 4 year old computer running Mint 16 which is just used for computer chess. Its not allowed onto the internet, so I have not needed to update it, which would require some effort. I just typed "dmesg | tail" today and I got this colin@PC70 ~ $ dmesg | tail [ 1353.971152] current rat...

Re: Windows 10 Dual Boot doesn't work

If you are installing on a UEFI system, you have to install Mint in UEFI mode. There are instructions on how to do that here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=912036 I made a mistake last year of installing Mint 17 64bit on an Acer laptop with Windows 8.1 on it without using the UEFI mo...

Cosmo. wrote:Yes, this is correct. amd64 indicates, that those are binaries for 64 bit computer, regardless if the have an AMD or an Intel cpu. i386 indicates a 32 bit package, again regardless of the manufacturer of the cpu.

AMD updates with Intel cpu? [Solved]

I built a new low power dissipation computer several months ago with an Intel Celeron N3050 cpu. All my previous computers have had AMD cpus. I installed linux Mint 18 mate 64bit on it ok. I had not used it recently and there were quite a lot of updates to do when I switched it on a couple of days a...

Re: Lost networking to windows after Samba updates 4-18-2016

I just saw the problem today, when I tried to copy a file on an old WinXP computer (never connected to internet since XP updates ended) to my main Mint 17 computer using Samba via ethernet. I had it bookmarked in caja and had no problems with access when last tried some weeks ago. The CIFS solution ...

Re: Boot Up to Blank Screen

Running LM 17.3 MATE. Occasionally when booting up I get a blank black screen and no desktop. Rebooting brings up the desktop. Is there a fix for this? Thanks. This is probably not the cause of the problem, but it is a possibility. Are you waiting long enough for bootup to complete? After so many b...

Re: SOLVED - Reinstall video drivers ATI AMD

Thanks for your info in the previous post MintyMorkyMindy My Mint 17 display reduced to 1024x768 and could not be changed after some Mint updates yesterday. I spent several hours trying to get it back to 1360x768 as it was before, but nothing I tried worked. Your first line of code "sudo sh /us...

Screen resolution - driver problem

Following an update today on my Mint 17 computer, which I noticed contained some fglrx updates, I am now unable to obtain the correct display resolution on my monitor after rebooting. Re: vboxclient the virtualbox kernel service is not running

I have had the pop-up problem on this computer for the last few days. I use Mint 17 64bit on this computer. My main one (its slower but quieter) uses Mint 17 32 bit and has not had the pop-up problem. I could not read all of the pop-up message because it was partly offscreen due to fact that I don't...
