Re: I need a Java 8 package

According to openjdk's site: http://openjdk.java.net/install/index.html debian has it. However, they aren't actually giving you the right info, because it's only in Debian Sid (unstable): https://packages.debian.org/sid/openjdk-8-jdk Unstable repo's won't work in LMDE2 either because it doesn't get ...

Re: Broken Graphics Drivers - Fix it and get a donation!

First I've heard of this issue.

What graphics card?
What are the system specs?
Did you upgrade or fresh install to LMDE2?
What drivers are you using (version)?

Sentences without specifics are not helpful :)

Re: Linux: Tricks of the Trade -- tips from our members

My tip for newbies.

Accept that this is not Windows, that it will never behave, have the same file structure, the same commands and the same look as Windows. That you should never think 'this is stupid on Windows I could....'.

It's Linux, so get used to it :)

[TUTORIAL] automating the boring (Bash)

I write a lot of Bash and Sh to automate boring tasks that I use a lot. In this tutorial, we will create a small Bash script to take a user input string and place it into a grep which then pipes the output to a file. First we need to create a new .sh file and add this at the very top: #!/bin/bash It...

Re: Wine, why an external software?

If people want a free clone of Windows, install ReactOS.

GNU/Linux is better off NOT attracting or being downgraded to a 'free clone'.

Re: ExtremeTech Article: Linux’s Worst-Case Scenario

I must admit, I do like secureboot. I know many in the community don't (especially the greybeards from the 70's). If we are to get linux more popular, growing with changes and adapting to them is required. I've always been puzzled why Mint doesn't plonk down a one time fee of 99$ to get secureboot c...

Re: Steam Civilization V

As always it's best to check specs beforehand (or research how to do it in mint). You can always use grep in your dmesg to discover (or give a clue to google) about what you may have. My Windows 8 laptop has a Geforce 620m and I can play Civ: Beyond Earth at minimum settings. So you'll definitely ne...

Re: Mint respin for business?

Businesses don't use RHEL because it's better. They use it because it is a company who provides this service and 'PROFESSIONAL' support at every level for every paying business. For Mint to even be considered there would have to be a corporate entity providing worldwide professional support with eng...

Re: Mate or Cinnamon; which one is more safe to use online?

This is why so many people have problems with their machines. Because most 'the general user' doesn't think about their habits online then blames the software for not working. Some will say you are more safe by design using Linux because of the separation between root and user. I also use Vista occa...

Re: keeping Uncle Sam out of our Computer System

As always, open source is your friend. Netcat. An open source TCP/UDP read/writing utility that can also double as a port scanner and listener for detecting backdoor intrusions. It's GPL'd and completely legal to use (as long as you don't use it to compromise) and only use it to monitor your own sys...

I loved Windows 3.1. It was the first one I used after we migrated from DOS. Very fond memories, possibly seen from rose tinted glasses but it was great.

Re: Windows 10 to be free upgarde

I would not put this down to Linux. The new Chief at MS is actually a really smart guy. He knows that the current tried and tested approach doesn't fit with the 21st century. Sure it could be down to competition too since Canonical have really been growing and their 'convergence' has almost certainl...

Re: What was your Linux noob experience like?

I first used Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. Nothing special, burnt a CD, booted, played around with it and generally had fun. I've always been a highly technical computer user since modding Doom back in the 90's. I never installed it as my main OS because where I was working at the time required Windows for w...

I understand the need perfectly fine, however many push it as an 'absolute need'. Which is false. I never said no backup is needed, perhaps you should read my post again.. slower?

Re: how about battery life?

Not always and for what I do it'll drain it equally since I'm compiling things and multitasking with eclipse and libreoffice etc. I actually think 4 hours is good for what I do. But if you leave it on the desktop it'll go to 5 hours. It's definitely getting better, I'm glad the linux kernel devs are...

Re: Can one person explain what is the future of LMDE

An upgrade path will be opened in a few weeks. No need to reinstall. Nevertheless, backup are not optional, even for upgrade. If you don't have a backup, then you consider that your files are not important. This is even more true with the fact that you have only a / partition and not a separate /ho...

Re: lmde 2 users

Everything works like a charm for me though I have an old x200s ThinkPad so this is expected. Installation was boring and uneventful (I guess we should start getting used to this in 2015 :D ), sound, wifi, function keys all work. I have not tried hibernation but it's an option so I guess it is enabl...
