Re: SMplayer Plays Video 14% Too Fast [SOLVED]

UPDATE:

Solved the problem: it didn't work until I upgraded my kernel past 3.17.x. Problem is gone with the newer kernel to support my hardware.

Re: Black desktop

Okay, well let's try this:

to launch terminal:

Code: Select all

ctrl+alt+t
To launch muffin (window manager):

Code: Select all

muffin
And we will see if that works. I have limited experience with cinnamon - I'm a KDE guy through and through - but hopefully I can help.

Re: Dual Booting Windows * and Linux Mint 17.1

Personally, I would try JOPETA's second link. rEFInd will allow you to boot without a hitch, and boot repair works on most machines. If you're just going to reinstall anyway, why not give it a shot?

Re: Upgrading dual-boot laptop from LM 14 to 17.1

Linux noob here. If I were presented with the same situation, I would chose the 'Something Else' option and then select the /dev/sda5 partition as the installation target. (your existing Linux O/S) and format. You already have a swap partition. that's about it - and click on the format check-box - ...

Re: Black desktop

Hello, First of all, let's try to diagnose the problem: hit Alt+F2 this will open a small search bar at the top of the screen. Type in the word konsole This will open up the command line emulator. Copy/paste or type the code from below into the terminal: plasma-desktop If your install is healthy, th...

Re: 2CD Installation on One USB drive?

Just a thought: Install Verctor to an USB twice using UNetbootin. 1.st installation using CD 2 2.th installation using CD 1 With second installation let installer overwrite boot files. Do not format or remove files between installations. Quite a good idea, but the second CD is not bootable. It caus...

2CD Installation on One USB drive?

Hello, I know this isn't related to LM, but I couldn't find any info online, and this is the most helpful forum out there, IMO. I am wanting to install Vectorlinux on a new laptop which has no CD drive. I want the SOHO edition, which only comes as two CD images. There is no merged DVD image. I'd typ...

Re: DVDs in MATE

It can seem pretty daunting, but it is fairly risk-free, in the end. Still, the key to success is being comfortable, so I think your choice is wise. I'd hope the next release of LM will have a newer one, but we'll see. No worries, mate. I'm sure it will work out sooner than later with your drive. Ju...

Re: DVDs in MATE

The USB Video drive is a Toshiba PA3834A-1DV2. I bought it to replace the broken on-board drive on my old ASUS laptop. It worked perfect on that. It works perfect on this machine also. Both VLC and Videos start on media insertion, but you have to reboot after changing preferences and selecting a ne...

Re: DVDs in MATE

Ehhh, I don't know about using the autoremove. I've personally never touched it. I come from an Arch and Slackware background, so I am not terribly familiar with apt-get. Regardless of that, it does look like the installation went fine. Keep in mind it needs a reboot. I take it your problem is still...

Re: DVDs in MATE

From some reading, it appears as though the HP drives have some problems with Ubuntu based distros. Haven't found a solution yet, but I'm looking. Humour me, and try installing this: sudo apt-get install libdvdread4 These are the resources to play encrypted DVDs (standard film DVDs) Chances are, you...

Re: DVDs in MATE

Things look normal on the surface but I'm digging around a bit more on it. I assume this is a built-in drive? If it is an outboard drive, it's a little bit different, because it is connected via USB.

Also, does your drive play audio CDs normally?

Could I get:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Re: DVDs in MATE

Hello,

A couple terminal outputs, if you will:

Code: Select all

dmesg | egrep -i --color 'cdrom|dvd|cd/rw|writer'

Code: Select all

more /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info

Code: Select all

cd-drive
If this one says you need to install a package, don't bother with it for now.

Hopefully we can work out the problem whit this.

Re: Dual boot Windows and Linux with rEFInd on bad UEFI syst

I dont want to touch anything else, even less in Windows files (wish Reefind has not done it yet). To what does "it" refer? Are you saying that rEFInd changed Windows files? The rEFInd EFI binary itself will never alter any Windows files. The rEFInd installer and mvrefind.sh script will s...

Re: Dual boot Windows and Linux with rEFInd on bad UEFI syst

@srs5694 The problem on "installing" Reefind (whatever it was), really don't mind (maybe it can not mount UEFI partition in an external device or, I didn't tell you, It's a RAID0). I don´t want to mend it only make it disappears. @ Hotpepperguy I've tried to uninstall it (purge) but nothi...

Re: Dual boot Windows and Linux with rEFInd on bad UEFI syst

I was thinking all the time this tool was making changes in the pendrive's UEFI partition (in order to choose it as a option in the UEFI menu when pressing F11 key like another DVD or USB Live) as Boot Repair did in my last try. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this. After installing rEFInd, ...

Re: Dual boot Windows and Linux with rEFInd on bad UEFI syst

I second srs5694, this is, indeed, the problem. This happened to me when I updated my BIOS. I haven't had this problem before that. Personally, I tried the first two solutions that srs posted, and they didn't work, unfortunately. My system, at the moment, is 100% set up with rEFInd as my primary boo...

Re: Boot from live usb[Black screen]

PS: i am interested in dual-booting with windows and already made sure that fast restart is disabled in power options in windows 8.1 Beauty! Looks like you are well-prepared. Yes, you will want to install in legacy, which will install LM in legacy mode. At this point, f you wish to boot Windows, yo...

Re: Cannot Boot LM 17.1 On Custom Build, Black Screen

Hi, Well, it appears as though the kernel boots fine, but it cannot read the live filesystem on the USB properly. The errors appear only after the kernel has detected all of your hardware. Did you try downloading LM17.1 again, in case you had a corrupted download. Hopefully it is just the download t...

Re: Boot from live usb[Black screen]

Hello, and welcome! This is quite a common issue, with a wide array of solutions to choose from. Unfortunately, not everyone's computer handles UEFI the same. It is often quite case-specific. There is a discussion going on in another thread (http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=18453...
