It might be worth looking into about:config Type about:config in your address bar, hit Enter, say OK to the warning. Then search for "scrollbar" and try changing some of the options there, like widget.non-native-theme.gtk.scrollbar.allow-buttons There are some other options there too. Yes...

Thanks, I hadn't found that - it works in Mint 17 but it does make the whole menu a bit more cumbersome.

Yes I've been trying to find an answer to the same problem but so far without success. I'm not sure if this is a quirk in caja, MATE, or the gtk bookmark system. Have you found an answer yet?
